HaysMed now using computer-assisted navigation for total knee replacements

HaysMed

HaysMed has started performing total knee replacements in specific candidates with computer assisted navigation.

Orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Oluwaseun Akinbo MD, has recently incorporated this novel computer assisted navigation into his practice for performing total knee replacements.

Computer-assisted total knee replacement is a procedure that ensures a higher level of precision with bone cuts during the knee replacement procedure.

Dr. Oluwaseun Akinbo

“With the aid of a real time surgical navigation system, we can improve on bony alignment and soft tissue balance, which are the two most critical components of a knee replacement,” said Akinbo.

“The CAS system we have used is slightly larger than a cell phone,” said

. “However, the technology is the equivalent to the larger CAS in precisely measuring the information needed for successful total knee replacements.”

When your knee replacement is aligned precisely the forces across the components are even, which results in less wear on the joint replacement.

“Computer-assisted knee replacement is one of the most technologically advanced methods of performing your knee replacement today. Your body’s everyday function is dependent upon a high degree of perfectly coordinated motions based on precision,” added Akinbo.

The computer based surgery is an option for anyone needing total knee replacement surgery. It is especially beneficial for patients at risk for malpositioning of components to include morbidly obese patients and patients with significant deformities. It also eliminates the removal of most indwelling implants prior to a knee replacement surgery.

FHSU’s Ball named to Google Cloud Academic All-America Team

FHSU University Relations

Fort Hays State junior Brandon Ball was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-America Team for At-Large Sports as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday. Earning Second Team honors, Ball is one of just 45 student-athletes nationally in NCAA Division II recognized on the At-Large Team, chosen from several sports that are part of the at-large category. Men’s sports included in the at-large category include wrestling, fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, and water polo.

Ball is a Technology Studies major at Fort Hays State. He carries a 3.80 cumulative GPA (3.77 at the time of the nomination as noted below). CoSIDA Academic All-District and All-America programs are voted on based off both a student-athlete’s athletic and academic accomplishments.

Recently, Ball was a men’s finalist for the MIAA Ken B. Jones Award. The annual award recognizes the conference’s male and female student-athletes of the year, combining athletic and academic accomplishments along with campus/community service.

Ball is one of the top wrestlers in NCAA Division II. He held the No. 1 ranking at 141 pounds from February 4 all the way through to the NCAA Championships at the end of the 2018-19 season. He entered the NCAA Championships undefeated at 24-0 and won his first three matches before dropping an overtime decision in the semifinals. He went on to earn All-America honors with a fourth-place finish, completing the year at 28-2 overall. In the process, Ball ran his career record at FHSU to 114-21. Ball is a two-time All-America performer for FHSU and a three-time national qualifier. He finished sixth in the nation at 141 pounds in 2017.

Though this award is for Ball’s accomplishments as a member of the wrestling team, he also competes as a pole vaulter for the FHSU Track and Field team. His top mark this season was 14-feet, 11.5 inches.

This is Ball’s first Academic All-America honor from CoSIDA. He is also a three-time member of the NWCA Division II All-Academic Team. Ball is the 49th CoSIDA Academic All-America selection in FHSU history and joins Connor Shedeed of football as Fort Hays State’s two Academic All-America selections by CoSIDA in 2018-19. He is the first Tiger wrestler to receive the honor since Jon Inman in 2016.

Update: Police arrest 2 suspects in Kan. child abduction, vehicle theft

SEDGWICK COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a reported child abduction and continue the search for two suspects.

Jason Barajas -photo Sedgwick Co.

Just before 4p.m. Wednesday, police responded to the 2100 block of S. Broadway for an abduction call. Officers contacted a 25-year-old woman at a convenience store who reported that her maroon Town and Country van was stolen from the parking lot, and that her three children were inside, according to Office Kevin Wheeler.

The children were two boys, ages 6 months and 18-months and a 2-year-old girl, according Captain Brent Allred.

Investigators determined the mother had turned off the van, left the keys in the vehicle as she went into the gas station convenience store, according to Allred.

One suspect later identified as 31-year-old Jason Barajas was a passenger in a silver SUV parked next to the van. He exited the SUV, got into the woman’s van and drove through the parking lot and then traveled northbound on Broadway. Officers located the stolen van in the 1500 Block of South Gold where Barajas had abandoned the van with children still inside. When police found the children, they were scared but unharmed, according to Allred. Police quickly reunited them with their parents.

On Wednesday night, detectives identified Barajas as a potential suspect and 55-year-old Wesley Coleman as the driver of the SUV they had been in at the convenience store, according to Allred.

Police arrested Barajas during a traffic stop at Kellogg and Tyler. He was in a stolen Suzuki Grand Vitara. He is being held on requested charges that include three counts of kidnapping, aggravated child endangerment, auto theft, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, transporting open container and an outstand warrant, according to Allred.

Coleman was identified with the help of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s office and was arrested in a separate vehicle stop in the 6200 Block of West Kellogg. He was not arrested for any charges from the abduction. He was booked for driving on a suspended license and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police will present the case to the Sedgwick County District attorney.
