Elizabeth Ann (Kuhn) Marcotte

Elizabeth Ann (Kuhn) Marcotte, died Saturday, December 23, 2017, with her son by her side at her daughter’s home in Silver Spring, Maryland.

She is survived by her son, Scott, of Hyattsville, Maryland; her daughter, Jacqueline Keeling, two granddaughters, Laura and Rachael Keeling, of Washington, DC and Baltimore, Maryland, respectively; a sister, Meg Mader and her husband Art, of Brighton, Colorado; a sister, Barbara Kuhn, of Chicago, Illinois; a brother, Richard Kuhn and his wife Judy, of Hays, Kansas; a sister-in-law, Mary Ann Kuhn, of Odessa, Missouri; and a sister-in-law, Judy Hayden and her husband Leo, of Goodland, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Clarence James Kuhn, her sister-in-law Sundra Clark, and in 2013, by her husband of 48 years, Gerard H. Marcotte.

Elizabeth was born on June 28, 1945, in Ellis County, Kansas, to Clarence and Laurina (Rohleder) Kuhn. She grew up on the family farm in Victoria, Kansas, graduated from Victoria High School in 1963, and attended Fort Hays Kansas State College (now FHSU). She met her future husband when he tagged along to a wedding dance with his fraternity brother.

Following her husband’s discharge from the United States Army in 1968, she and her family made their home in Maryland. She worked for many years in the commercial construction industry. After her husband’s passing, she started a new career at Regency Commercial Construction, in Beltsville, Maryland, where she enjoyed working until only weeks before her death.

She was renowned for her homemade raisin bread and chocolate chip cookies. She no doubt will be mourned by the backyard birds and the semi-feral cats who relied on her kind heart and generosity. She loved to watch golf and football. She loved to be near the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. She loved to baby her houseplants and her garden. She loved her friends. She loved her family, and she was most delighted when she was with all of them together, whether it was by the beach, or in a fine restaurant, or at the kitchen table.

The family suggests memorials to: The Folds of Honor Foundation or The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.

David G. Winkelmann

SMITH CENTER – David G. Winkelmann, age 89 passed away Saturday January 6, 2018 at the Smith County Memorial Hospital in Smith Center, KS.

David was born the son of Wilhelm & Lydia (Beckmann) Winkelmann on December 25, 1928 in Athol, KS.

He is survived by his daughter Sandra Conrad of Smith Center; a grandson Tanner Conrad of Salina; and a half-sister Della Arbour of Michigan.

Milfred Dean DeYoung

Milfred Dean DeYoung passed away on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at Redbud Village in Plainville, Kansas at the age of 91. He was born on October 30, 1926 in Prairie View, Kansas to the late Henry John and Della (Kolste) DeYoung. He grew up on the family farm near Palco attending the local school. On August 20, 1947 he was united in marriage to Norma Jean Noah at the Redline Church of God. They were blessed with three children. Together they raised their family as he continued to run the farm.

Milfred enjoyed his life on the farm. When he was able to get away, he would spend his time enjoying his many hobbies which included attending farm shows, traveling, taking in a car or motorcycle race, listening to music, snow skiing, flying, riding motorcycles, metal fabrication, and coffee with friends. Milfred was a member of the Palco United Methodist Church and Lion’s Club and served on the USD #269 Board of Education, Graham County Hospital Board, and First National Bank of Palco Board of Directors.

Milfred is survived by his wife Norma Jean DeYoung; daughters Debra Unrein and husband Scott of Denver, CO and Marsha Newell and husband Dale of Hays, KS; son Phil DeYoung and wife Jo of Colby, KS; sisters Verda Guthrie and Ila Parr, both of Great Bend, KS; and two grandchildren Ian and Jules Unrein of Denver, CO.

He is preceded in death by his parents Henry and Della DeYoung; brothers Calvin and Stanley DeYoung; and sister Bernice Widener.

Milfred was a man of few words who was a true gentleman, fun-loving and adventurous at heart. With strong faith and abiding hope, he worked hard, loved greatly, and now rests from his labors. He will be greatly missed, and we will cherish his memory in our hearts forever.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at the United Methodist Church in Palco. Burial will follow in the Pleasantview Cemetery in Palco. Visitation will be from 2:00-8:00pm at the funeral home in Plainville. The family will receive friends from 1:00pm until service time on Wednesday. Memorials are suggested to the Palco United Methodist Church, Palco Lions Club, or Redbud Village and may be sent in care of Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home, 320 SW 2nd, Plainville, KS 67663.

Ronald Keith Mead

Ronald Keith Mead, 73, of Russell, Kansas, died on Friday, January 05, 2018, at his home in Paradise, Kansas, surrounded by his loving family.

Ron was born on July 21, 1944, in Russell, Kansas, the son of Ray and Sarah V. (Beck) Mead. He grew up around the Waldo and Paradise, Kansas, area and graduated from Waldo High School in the class of 1962. He met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Elizabeth Ann “Betty” Urban on June 08, 1963, in Russell, Kansas, at the St. Mary Catholic Church. From this union Ron and Betty were blessed with 4 children Keith, Kendyl, Kim and Karmen. He work for the Paradise Township in charge of road maintenance. He was a member of the Lions Club, Waldo Senior Center and was a former Boy Scout leader. He enjoyed bowling, working as a handy man and spending time with his family. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his kids and grandkids.

Surviving family include his wife Betty of the home, sons Keith Mead (Bobbi) of Bastrop, Texas, Kendyl Mead (Becky) of Russell, Kansas, Kim Mead (Deb) of Paradise, Kansas and daughter Karmen Stecklein (Kelly) of Russell, Kansas; brother Gerold Mead (Ruth) of Tampa, Florida; sisters Barbara Robertson of Waldo, Kansas, Maralyn Wilson of Russell, Kansas and Joan Pitts of Waldo, Kansas and 7 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A graveside service for Ron will be held at 3:30 PM on Tuesday, January 09, 2018, at the Grand Center Cemetery North of Waldo, Kansas. Family is having a private family viewing earlier in the day and the family will greet guests at the cemetery. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be given to the Waldo Senior Center and sent in care of the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.

Louise Alice Wallace

Louise Alice Wallace, 84, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Thursday, January 04, 2018, at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell, Kansas after a brief illness.

Louise was born on June 25, 1933, in Dispatch, Kansas, the daughter of Martin and Marcia (Lessenden) Verhage. She grew up on a farm in Jewell County, Kansas with her 10 siblings. She attended country schools before graduating from High School in Downs, Kansas. Louise married John A. Wallace of Luray on August 19, 1951, in Osborne, Kansas. Louise and John had three children, Patricia, Vicki and Roger. Louise was a homemaker and farmer, working side by side with John, on the Wallace farm north of Luray. She was an active member of the Cheyenne United Methodist Church. In 2009, Louise and John retired and moved to Russell where Louise spent most of her time caring for John who received dialysis three days a week. Louise enjoyed quilting, gardening, reading, sewing, needlework and researching family genealogy. Louise loved animals and could be seen walking her dogs through the neighborhood almost every day. In her last few years she had joined an exercise class and continued to volunteer for local organizations. But most of all, Louise was delighted to keep in touch with her large extended family by letters, phone calls and visits. Louise maintained an active life until the week preceding her death.

Surviving family include Patricia Colglazier of Rozel, Kansas, Vicki Hemmerling (Dwight) of Hutchinson, Kansas and Roger Wallace (Mara) of Elkhorn, Nebraska. She is survived by 5 brothers, 2 sisters, 7 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and dozens of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John on April 27, 2016, son in-law Daniel Colglazier, and 3 brothers.

A celebration of Louise’s life will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, January 16, at the Luray United Methodist Church in Luray, Kansas, with Pastor Les Rye officiating. A lunch will be provided at the church after the service. A private family inurnment will take place later at Vincent Cemetery. Visitation with family greeting guests will be from 6 pm to 8 pm on January 15, 2018, at the Pohlman-Varner- Peeler mortuary in Russell. Memorials may be given to the Luray Library and sent in care of the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.

Bettie Jean Shank

Bettie Jean Shank, age 94, died on January 6, 2018 at the Ness County Hospital, Ness City. She was born on November 9, 1923 in Bazine, Kansas the daughter of Frank and Mary (Grimmett) Lent.

Bettie was a 1941 graduate of Bazine High School and she was a member of the First Baptist Church, Bazine. For several years she worked at the Bazine State Bank.

She married Harry Shank on June 8, 1947 in Bazine. He preceded her in death on August 20, 2017. She is survived by her son, Harold Shank and his wife, Jan of Hanston; her daughter, Jean Petersilie and her husband, Doug of Ness City; five grandchildren, Katie and Travis Ruff, Jared and Erin Petersilie, Travis and Laurie Petersilie, Brad and Tara Shank, and Kalyn and Kyle Newman; and 13 great grandchildren, Garrett, Jessie, and Kody Ruff, Ethan and Jadyn Petersilie, Emma, Isabel, and Aubrey Petersilie, Devin, Talon, and Ryker Shank, and Koby and Kade Newman.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her brother, Robert Lent.

Funeral service will be on Wednesday, January 10, 2018, 10:00 a.m. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City with burial following in the Crandall Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. with the family present from 6-8 pm.

Memorial contributions may be given to the First Baptist Church, Bazine or Ness County EMS, Ness City.

Robert L. Schmidtberger

Victoria, Kansas – Robert L. Schmidtberger, age 90, died Sunday, January 7, 2018, at his home.

He was born October 8, 1927, on a farm north of Gorham, Kansas, to John F. and Albina (Frank) Schmidtberger. He married Marie A. (Bollig) on October 17, 1949, at Victoria, Kansas. She preceded him in death on September 20, 2017.

He was an oil field pumper for Dreiling Oil Company for 35 years and was a farmer.

Bob grew up in the Gorham area and was a graduate of Gorham High School. He was drafted into the Army but never was called to service. Robert and his brother Lewis started Schmidtberger Construction Company. He lived in Gorham, Buckeye and Hays, before moving to Victoria in 1950. After his retirement he was a contract pumper for a number of years.

He a member of The Basilica of St. Fidelis, Victoria, Kansas and was a church usher for over 50 years. He was a member of The Gorham State Bank Board, and served 12 years on the U.S.D. #432 School Board. He was inducted into the Fair Board Hall of Fame at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson, Kansas. Bob and his wife Marie, started The Victoria Vikings 4-H Club and were Club Leaders for 18 years. He served on the Ellis County Fair Board for 20 years and was very active with the Ellis County 4-H. He also helped in the construction and design of the current Ellis County Fairgrounds.

Survivors include six sons, Jerry Schmidtberger, Leroy Schmidtberger and wife, LeeAnn, Wayne Schmidtberger, Ron Schmidtberger and wife, Kim, all of Victoria, KS; Gary Schmidtberger and wife, Wanda, Hays, KS; Pat Schmidtberger, Wichita, KS; one daughter, Judy Rupp and husband, Rick, Victoria, KS; one brother, Paul Schmidtberger and wife, Vera, Great Bend, KS; one sister, Lila Jean Bollig, Hays, KS; 15 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers, Lewis Schmidtberger and wife, Armella, Elmer Schmidtberger and wives, Jean, Norma and Velma; one brother-in-law Edwin Bollig; one sister-in-law, Theresa Bollig, two nephews, Raymond Schmidtberger and Steven Schmidtberger; one daughter-in-law, Louise Schmidtberger; one great grandson, Jonah Schmidtberger; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Anthony and Euphrosina (Hoffman) Bollig.

Services are at 10:00 A.M. Friday, at The Basilica of St. Fidelis and burial in St. Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria, Kansas

A vigil service/rosary will be at 6:30 P.M. Thursday, at The Basilica of St. Fidelis, Victoria, Kansas.
Visitation will be from 6:00 to 9:00 P.M. Thursday, and from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M. Friday, at The Basilica of St. Fidelis.

Thomas Eugene ‘Stretch’ Carlton

Thomas Eugene “Stretch” Carlton, beloved son of Gene and Irene (Peterson) Carlton, was born in Norton, Kansas on June 30, 1953, and peacefully passed away at his home in Norton surrounded by his loving family on January 4, 2018, at the age of 64.

Tom grew up in Norton and attended Norton Community High School. On November 20, 1987, Tom married the love of his life, Nancy Keiswetter and to this union two wonderful children were born. Tom worked as a fabricator at New Age for several years.

Tom enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading, watching game and car shows, playing board games, and loved animals. His greatest love was his family, especially his loving wife and children.

Survivors include: his loving wife, Nancy of their home in Norton; two sons, Vernon and Matthew Carlton, both of Norton; three sisters, Mary Arehart, Norton; Loretta Ray, Norton; Connie Hendrix, Hays, KS; several other relatives and friends.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, JB, and one sister, Gerry.

Per Tom’s last request, cremation was chosen and there will be no memorial services held. Memorials may be made out to the Tom Carlton Memorial Fund and sent to PO Box 13, Norton, Kansas.

Sandra Ann Charmasson

KENSINGTON, KS – Sandra Ann Charmasson, age 65 passed away on Thursday January 4, 2018 at the Smith County Memorial Hospital in Smith Center. She was a retired LPN.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents and an infant daughter.

Survivors include her husband Eugene of the home; daughters Michelle (Johnny) Ketcherside of Woodward, OK and Charity (Jason) Randall of Kensington, KS; 4 grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Louise (Hugh) Jones and Imagene (Bruce) Marston.

Rosaline ‘Rosie’ Burgardt

Rosaline “Rosie” Burgardt, 86, Hays, died Friday, January 5, 2018 at Via Christi Village.

She was born July 9, 1931 in Hays the daughter of William and Mary (Quint) Hoff. She was a 1949 graduate of Hays High School and on August 16, 1950 she was united in marriage to Fredoline P. “Fritz” Burgardt in Emmeram, Kansas. They were married for over 50 years before he preceded her in death on November 21, 2000. She was a nurse’s aide and ward clerk at St. Anthony Hospital and Hays Medical Center for 32 years and was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.

She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and vegetable and flower gardening. She also enjoyed watching wrestling on television, polka music, animals and walking her dog, and going to garage sales, always finding a use for things that others discarded.

Survivors include two sons; Alfred Burgardt and wife Kathy of Hays, and Larry Burgardt and wife Zoni of Moore, Oklahoma, two daughters; Mary Leer and husband Mike of Manhattan and Brenda Burgardt of Hays, three grandchildren; Randy Leer and wife Sandy of California, Amanda Reilly and husband Joe of Nebraska, and Joe Burgardt of Oklahoma, four great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Fritz.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Monday, January 8, 2018 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 1805 Vine Street, with Fr. Leo Blasi officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 8:00 on Sunday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Monday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street. A parish vigil service and rosary will be at 6:30 pm on Sunday at the funeral home.

Judy Ann (Blackburn) Phillips, age 68, of WaKeeney, passed away Thursday, January 4, 2018, at her home in WaKeeney.
