Phyllis G. “Gerry” Fink, 92, of Russell, Kansas, died on Tuesday, August 02, 2016, at the Russell Regional Hospital.

A celebration of Gerry’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, August 08, 2016, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas, with Pastor Ezekiel Koech officiating. Burial will follow at the Russell City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 P.M. to 8 P.M. on Sunday, August 07, 2016, at the mortuary with family present to greet guests from 3 P.M. to 5 P.M. Sunday afternoon. Memorials may be given to Trinity United Methodist Church and sent in care of the mortuary.

Donald ‘Duck’ Edward Pesicka

Screen Shot 2016-08-04 at 7.56.05 AMDonald “Duck” Edward Pesicka, son of Fred and Wilhelmina Sophia (Reich) Pesicka, was born December 13, 1940 in Dupree, South Dakota. He grew up on a farm where he learned the value of hard work, love for the land, and love for family. He graduated from the Dupree School District High School as part of the Class of 1959.

Don moved to California in 1959, where he lived for 35 years. For a majority of this time, he worked for the City of Alameda as the Park Supervisor. On October 14, 1970, he was united in marriage to the love of his life Sandra Yleen Owens in Alameda, California. Together, they raised their beloved granddaughter Amanda (Rogers) Butkovich. He was always very proud of his little girl.

In 1989, Don joined the Elks Lodge in Alameda, where he went on to become a lifetime member. Eventually, he retired from the city and moved to Russell, Kansas. There, he joined the Masons and Shriners. In 2012, he moved to Olathe, Kansas, in order to live closer to his granddaughter Amanda.
In his free time, Don loved spending time with family and friends, playing with his faithful dog Wylie, working outdoors, going to coffee, tinkering in the garage, riding on his motorcycle, and traveling to South Dakota. All who knew him remember his big smile, kind heart, and warm spirit.
He passed away peacefully at his home in Olathe on July 22, 2016, at the age of 75 years, 7 months, and 9 days. There, he had been recovering from recent heart surgery. His final days were filled with love, and he was surrounded by family and friends.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, sister Margaret Borgess, brothers Alvin and Wayne Pesicka, and son Ed Haley.

Survivors include his wife Sandra of Olathe; daughters Sharl (Gary) Leon of Hayward, California and Kimberly (James) Walton of Tempe, Arizona; son Fred Haley of Irving, Texas; granddaughters Amanda (Michael) Butkovich of Olathe, Kansas and Kristina and Jessica Ambrosino of Phoenix, Arizona; grandsons Vincent Ambrosino, Jr. of Phoenix, Arizona and Fred Haley, Jr. of Irving, Texas; great-grandchildren Alex and Lexy Bermeo of Phoenix, Arizona; and many other relatives and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

A memorial service to celebrate Donald’s life will be held at 11 A.M. on Saturday, August 06, 2016, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas. Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 11 A.M. Saturday morning before the memorial service. Memorials may be given to the City of Russell Tree Program and sent in care of the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the memorial service arrangements.

Jim L. Adams

He was born on February 7, 1935 in Cherryvale, Kansas, the son of Walter W. and Blanche Valk Adams. A resident of Scott City, Kansas since 1974 moving from Iola, Kansas, he was a retired Navy Veteran of the Vietnam War and also retired from working for John Deere for over 20 years.

He was a member of American Legion, FRA, AAA & AARP.

On March 16, 1981 he married Mary Lou Dinning in Miami, Oklahoma. She survives.

Survivors include his Wife – Mary Lou Adams of Scott City, Kansas, Three Daughters – Carole Doraine Mackenzie of Lawrenceburg, Indiana, Brenda & Harvey Tucker of Scott City, Kansas, Dana Rains of Thackerville, Oklahoma, One Brother – Eugene Adams of Cherryvale, Kansas, One Sister – Martha Harris of Coffeyville, Kansas, Sixteen Grandchildren and Eleven Great Grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his Parents, One Brother – Dean Adams and One Sister – Leora Wiles.

Funeral Services will be held at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Scott City, Kansas at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 6, 2016 with Rev. Kyle Evans presiding.

Dumler,VerapaperpicVera D. (Schultz) Dumler, 84, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Monday morning, August 1, 2016 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.

Vera was born on September 3, 1931 at the family home outside of Bunker Hill, Kansas. She was the youngest of nine children born to David, Sr. and Katherine (Prester) Schultz.
She grew up and attended school in Bunker Hill before her family moved to Russell. She graduated from Russell High School in the Class of ’49.

Vera was united in marriage to Richard D. “Rich” Dumler on October 23, 1955. This union was blessed with three children; Lori, Brad and Lynn. They made their home in Russell. Rich preceded her in death on March 20, 2013.

Vera started working as an usher for the Mecca and Dream Theaters during high school. She then worked for Holland Abstract Offices and Russell State Bank. Vera was a devoted wife and homemaker while her children were growing up. She then went back to work at the central office of U.S.D. 407 and later returned to Russell State Bank as a bookkeeper. She retired in 1993. Vera was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and Altar Guild. She enjoyed sewing, counted cross stitching, cross word puzzles, reading, walking, dancing. Vera also loved helping Rich with his projects, she was his “Right Hand”.

Surviving family include her two daughters, Lori Dumler (Marlin) and Lynn Dumler all of Russell, Kansas; her son, Brad Dumler (Linda) of Arlington, Texas; four grandchildren, Katie Vars (Ryan), Jake Dumler (Shiloah), Cody Dumler (Meghan) and Samantha Dotson; four great grandchildren, Taylor Vars, Logan Vars, Allison Dumler and Adrian Dumler; two sister-in-laws and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Rich; two sisters, Media Ulrich and Elsa Ehrlich; six brothers, Fred, Dave Jr, Sam, Ed, Rueben and Willis.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am Friday, August 5, 2016 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell. A private family burial will take place before the service. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM Thursday, August 4, 2016 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Memorials have been established with the American Heart Association or Dreiling-Schmidt Cancer Center in Hays. He was born February 9, 1924, in St. Peter, Kansas to Anton and Rosalie (Geibler) Dinkel. He married Odellia “Tillie” (Schamberger) on October 10,1950 in St. Peter, Kansas. She died November 5, 2013.

Leo was a District Manager for Kansas-Nebraska Natural Gas Company for 35 years. He had lived in Palco, Plainville and Quinter before he retired in 1990 and moved to Hays. He attended school in rural Gove County, graduating from Quinter High School in 1943 and attended Sterling College following his time serving in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a survivor of the famous Battle of the Bulge.

He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, the IHM Perpetual Worship Team and Knights of Columbus and a volunteer at Via Christi, formerly St. John’s of Hays, all of Hays. He was a former member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus both of Collyer. He was a past member of the Quinter Rotary Club, Quinter Volunteer EMT and Quinter Volunteer Fire Department. While he was in Quinter he helped to start and manage the little League Baseball Teams, a Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America and an instructor for the Kansas Hunters Safety Classes for 15 years.

Leo was a lifelong sports fan, watching every sporting event he could, particularly the KC Royals, KC Chiefs, and KU Basketball. He especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren participate in baseball and softball.
Survivors include two sons, Dennis Dinkel, Grinnell, KS; Stephen and his wife, Kathy Dinkel, Hays, KS; eight grandchildren, Rachel See and husband David, Oakley, KS, Anthony Dinkel, Grinnell, KS, Leatte Dinkel, Garden City, KS; Michael Dinkel and his wife, Monica, Starbuck, WA, Chris Dinkel and his wife, Visi, Hays, KS; Molly (Dinkel) Lofstrom and her husband, Chris, Hays, KS; Matthew Dinkel, Kansas City, KS, and Amanda Dinkel, Wichita, KS, and six great grandchildren; one brother, Robert Dinkel, Collyer, KS and one sister, Rosemary Walt, Collyer, KS.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; four brothers, Alvin, Paul, Donnie and Clarence Dinkel; four sisters, Bertha Applehans, Beata Malsam, Marcella Malsam and Rosalie Schaffer.

Services are at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, August 6, 2016, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church Collyer, Kansas. Burial in St. Michael’s Cemetery Collyer, Kansas with military honors by the Hays V.F.W. Post No. 9076.

A celebration of life service is at 7:00 P.M. Friday and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 8:00 P.M. Friday both at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas 67601.

She later worked at Mull’s Department Store which later became Whiting’s Department Store. In 1993 she moved to Hoxie and them back to Dighton in 2008. She enjoyed cooking and baking, especially cooking Christmas Dinner for the family and being with her Nieces and Nephews. She was preceded in death by her Parents, 4 Brothers- Wendlin Herman, Leonard Herman, Robert Herman & Victor Herman, 1 Sister- Louise Zerr, 1 Niece- Lisa Herman & 2 Nephews- Paul McCulloch & David McCulloch.

Kenneth Paul Schmidt

Kenneth Paul Schmidt, 76, of Salina, passed away Saturday, July 30, 2016. He was born April 8, 1940, in Hays to George and Catherine (Briet) Schmidt. The family lived in Pfeifer, Kan. When he was 12 years old his mother died and the family relocated to Salina.

He married Janet Fraser on Aug. 11, 1962 at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Salina. They were blessed with one daughter, Lee Ann.

Kenneth worked for the City of Salina for 49 years, the Salina Fire Department from 1960 to 1990 and after retirement from the fire department he worked at the Bi Center from 1991 to 2009.

He was very proficient in wood working, winning many ribbons at the fair. He gave many items to his relatives and friends.

He was an active member of the NRA.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Lexi Ann; six sisters; four brothers; one niece; and one nephew.

Kenneth is survived by his wife, Janet of the home; daughter, Lee Ann; son-in-law, Tom; two grandsons, Trevor (Ariele) and Cash; one sister, Patty; one brother, Leroy; mother-in-law, Dora; two sister-in-laws; two brother-in-laws; 33 nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2, with a vigil and rosary beginning at 6 p.m., all at Ryan Mortuary, Salina.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Lawrence E. Breit, age 92, died Friday, July 29, 2016, at Hays Medical Center Hays, Kansas. He was born October 27, 1923, in Bison, Kansas to Joseph and Anna Margaret (Urban) Breit.

He was raised in Bison and was disabled. He worked at the Reed Center in Hays and has been with Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas for over 30 years. He lived at St. John’s of Hays and then Via Christi Village Care Center.

Survivors include two sisters, Victoria “Vicky’ Befort, Great Bend, KS; and Millicent ‘Millie” Werth,
Wichita, KS.

center-149x195-4431107Donald Dean Bernbeck, 86 died Saturday, July 23, 2016 at the Denver Hospice in Denver, Colorado.

He was born October 19, 1929 in Utica, Kansas the son of Ephraim G. & Martha (Schwindt) Bernbeck.
Donald grew up and attended school in Utica, Kansas.

After graduating from Utica High School he attended Kansas State University for 2 years. He was then stationed on the U.S.S. Philippine Sea during the Korean War in which he served from 1948 to 1952. On August 26, 1953, he married Juliana Marie “Anne” Dechant in Hays, Kansas. They moved to Manhattan, Kansas while Donald earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture. They moved to Garden City in 1956. They later lived in Jetmore and Utica for a short time before moving to Lakin in 1961. They later lived in Eudora, Kansas for a short time before moving to Parker, Colorado in 1994. They have lived in the Denver area since.

While living in Garden City and Jetmore, Donald worked for the Kansas State Extension offices. While in Lakin, he owned and operated Don’s Standard Service for 11 years before owning and operating Bernbeck Oil Co. In Eudora, Donald sold real estate for several years and after moving to Parker, Colorado he worked as a contract carrier and express driver for the United States Postal Service. He then retired in 2011.

Donald was a member of Ave Maria Catholic Church in Parker, Co., St. Anthony Catholic Church in Lakin, the Knights of Columbus, VFW of Lakin, and the NRA. He enjoyed airplanes and flying airplanes, and all sports where he loved to watch his grandchildren participate.

Survivors include 3 sons Devlon & (Joyce) Bernbeck, Lance & (Tonja) Bernbeck, and Duane & (Bonnie) Bernbeck all of Garden City; 3 daughters Kallie & (Frank) Male of Eudora, Ks., Donna & (Tony) Ramos of Garden City, Ks., and Trisha & (Leon) Anderson of Parker, Co.; 3 sisters Elvira Kilroy of Nokmis, Fl., Kay & (Dick) Horchem of Ness City, Ks., and Wanda MacKenzie of Gold Canyon, Az.; a brother Gary & (Anita) Bernbeck of Grand Junction, Co.; 14 Grandchildren; and 7 Great Grandchildren.

Donald is preceded in death by his wife Anne who died on November 16, 2009. He is also preceded in death by his parents; a son Richard W. Bernbeck; a daughter Deanna Marie Bernbeck; and a brother Gerald Bernbeck.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 28, 2016 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Lakin with Fr. Rene Labrador as Celebrant. Burial will follow at the Lakin Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.

The family request memorials given to St. Anthony Catholic Church or to the Denver Hospice both in care of Garnand Funeral Home of Lakin.

Former Phillipsburg resident Ingrid B. Hewitt, age 97, passed away Monday, July 25, 2016 at the Holdrege Memorial Homes in Holdrege, NE.

She was born July 19, 1919 in Phelps County, Nebraska the daughter of E. Richard & Mabel (Nelson) Larson.

She was united in marriage to Don Hewitt on August 22, 1943 in Smith Center, Kansas.  He preceded her in death on July 6, 1997.

Survivors include her nephew, Royce Larson & wife, Kathleen Rae of Holdrege, NE; niece, Kathleen Ann Larson of Kearney, NE; 4 great nephews; 1 great niece; and a host of great great nieces & nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, July 29, 2016 in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Jean Clayton officiating.  Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.

Mrs. Hewitt will lie in state from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and until service time Friday at the funeral chapel.
