Richard D. Hockman

Densmore resident, Richard D. Hockman, passed away Fri., Nov. 30, at the Norton County Hospital in Norton, KS at the age of 81.  He was born March 23, 1931 in Hoxie, KS to Ora F. Hockman & Martha (Boys) Hockman. His son, Paul Richard, and daughter, Mary Theresa, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Rita, of the home; sons, Robert of Salina, KS; Keith of Plainville, KS; Lyle of Phillipsburg, KS; and Kirk of Topeka, KS; five grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; 6 step grandchildren; and one step great-grandchild.

Rosary service will be held Sunday evening, Dec. 2, at 7:00 p.m. in the Logan Funeral Home, Logan, KS.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, Dec. 3, at 11:00 a.m. in the St. John’s Catholic Church, Logan, KS, with Father George Chalbhagam officiating.  Burial will follow in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Densmore, KS with military honors.

Visitation will be Sunday from noon – 9:00 p.m. at the Logan Funeral Home.

Phillipsburg resident, Judith Lynn Bucy, passed away Saturday, November 24, 2012 at the Phillips County Hospital at the age of 68.

She was born, April 10, 1944 in McPherson, KS the daughter of Paul & Vera (DuPont) Bucy.

Survivors include her sister, Delores Knowles of Kirwin, KS and nieces and nephews.

Cremation was planned.  Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 28, 2012 in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.

Bill Murphy

Phillipsburg resident, Bill Murphy, passed away Friday, Nov. 16, at the Phillips Co. Retirement Center in Phillipsburg, KS at the age of 83.  He was born Feb. 18, 1929 in Norton, KS to Thomas & Mayme (Youngs) Murphy.  He worked at the CRA Refinery in Phillipsburg for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Betty, of the home; two sons, Ron Murphy of Littleton, CO and Rod Murphy of Centennial, CO; two daughters, Dian Hanchett of Phillipsburg, KS and Renee Goodwin of Andover, NH; 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Cremation is planned.  A memorial service will be held Friday, Nov. 23, at 10:30 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Joel Hiesterman officiating.  Inurnment and graveside service will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the Selden Cemetery, Selden, KS.

Friends may sign his memory book on Wednesday, Nov. 21 from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Albertine Rome

Hays, Kansas – Albertine Rome, age 91, died Saturday, November 17, 2012, at her daughter’s home in Hays, Kansas.

She was born March 19, 1921, in Hays, Kansas, to Joseph and Mary (Windholz) Schmeidler. She married Fidelis Rome on May 2, 1939, in Victoria, Kansas. He died April 14, 1962.

She worked at St. John’s Rest Home, Victoria, Kansas, in housekeeping for 17 years. After her retirement she devoted her time to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a member of St. Fidelis Catholic Church and Daughters of Isabella both of Victoria, Kansas.

Survivors include her daughter, Janice Helget and husband, Alan, Hays, KS; one sister, Sybilla Schmidt, Ellis, KS; one sister-in-law, Laurinda Schmeidler, Hays, KS; two grandchildren, Shannon Weber and husband, Rod, St. George, KS; Stacy Budig and her companion, Jered Horn, Hays, KS; three great grandchildren, Ryan and Brandon Weber, and Morgan Budig. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one brother, Eugene Schmeidler; and one brother-in-law, Alexius F. Schmidt.

Services are 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, November 20, 2012, at St. Fidelis Catholic Church, Victoria, Kansas. Burial in St. Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria, Kansas.

Mildred Julia Kuntzsch

Gorham, Kansas – Mildred Julia Kuntzsch, age 85, died Thursday, November 15, 2012, at Via Christi Village Care Center, Hays, Kansas.

She was born April 21, 1927, in Victoria, Kansas, to Peter A. and Elizabeth (VonLintel) Quint.  She married Frederick E. “Fred” Kuntzsch on June 17, 1946, in Victoria, Kansas.  He died October 26, 1996.

She worked at Safeway Foods and Travenol in Hays, Kansas.  She owned and operated the Derby Café in Scott City, Kansas, until her retirement in 1988 when she moved to Gorham, Kansas.   Prior she had lived in Larned, Great Bend, and Hays, Kansas.  She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Daughter of Isabella Circle #0287 both of Gorham, Kansas.

Survivors include four daughters, Kara Bredvick, and Coralee Klein and husband, Edward both of Gorham, KS; Ruann Stang and husband Thom, Ellsworth, KS; Marlys Simons and husband Donald, Hays, KS; one son, Frederick E. Kuntzsch II and wife, Trudi, Scott City, KS;  two brothers, Clyde Quint, AZ; Donald Quint and wife Sylvia, Hutchinson, KS; two sisters-in-law, Midge
Quint, Co; Elvie Quint, Liberal, KS; 15 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three brothers, Floyd, Kenneth and Clarence Quint; one sister, Mabel Dreher.

Services are 10:00 A.M. Saturday, November 17, 2012, at St. Fidelis Catholic Church, Victoria, Kansas.  A private family inurnment will be at a later date.

A vigil service will be at 7:00 P.M. Obituary – November 15, 2012

Johnny H. Deines

Lifelong WaKeeney resident, Johnny H. Deines, passed away at his home on Wednesday, November 14, 2012.  He was 71 years of age.

Johnny was born April 14, 1941 in Trego Center, the son of Benjamin and Pauline (Stieben) Deines.  He was united in marriage to LeVay Sue Glick on November 26, 1966 in Hill City.  They enjoyed 40 years of marriage until LeVay passed away on January 29, 2007.  Johnny was a jack of all trades, having been known for the ability to do about anything with his hands.  Throughout his life, he was employed by Deines Construction, was a chain hand for Discovery Drilling, and was a custodian for Trego Grade School for many years.  He was a longtime member of Fraternal Order of Eagles and belonged to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church.  Johnny enjoyed his many years as an umpire for American Legion and K-18 baseball.   He was an avid KU basketball fan.

Johnny will be missed by many friends and family, including his four children Brenda and husband Kenny Hilmes, Renea and husband Mikeal Williams, Shawn and wife Kerah, and Janelle Deines, all of WaKeeney; two brothers Edgar and LaVerne, both of WaKeeney; a sister Lillian Cochran of Great Bend; and six grandchildren Danielle and Brandon Katt, Shawna, Graeden and Hudson Deines, and Angel Deines .  He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; three brothers Elmer, Carrol, and Raymond; and four sisters Vera Stenzel, Wilma Cochran, Betty Zeman, and Charlotte Hill.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 16, 2012 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church of WaKeeney, with pastor Randy Gibbs officiating.  Burial will be in the WaKeeney City Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Paul S. Schrant

Walker, Kansas – Paul S. Schrant, age 84, died Wednesday, November 7, 2012, at Via Christi Village Care Center, Hays, Kansas.

He was Born May 14, 1928, on the family farm South of Walker, Kansas, to William and Margaret (Heffner) Schrant.  He married Alice Marie (Rupp) on October 11, 1958, in Ellis, Kansas.

He was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force, a farmer and worked in the oil fields.  He was on the drilling rigs for over 30 years, and with Raines & Williamson Oil company for 15 years.  He served as the Walker Township Assessor for five years.  He was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Walker, Kansas.

Survivors include his wife, Alice M. Schrant, of the home; five daughters, Marilyn Joy and husband, George, Hays, KS; Lucy Conness and husband, Dave, WaKeeney, KS; Marjorie Straub and husband, Rick, Walker, KS; Patricia Anschutz, Hays, KS; Pamela Irwin and husband, Darren, Salina, KS; 15 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, William R. “Bill” Schrant (January 18, 2012);  two grandchildren, Curtis and Threse Conness, one brother, William John Schrant; four half-brothers, Bernard Thomas and Lawrence Thomas, William E. Schrant and William F. Schrant; two sisters, Irene Brown and Stella Sander; and infant half-sister, Mary Florence Schrant.

Services are 10:00 A.M. Saturday, November 10, 2012, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Walker, Kansas.  Burial in St. Ann’s Cemetery, Walker, Kansas, with military honors by the Victoria V.F.W. Post No. 1751.

Gayle Noone-Dean

Logan resident, Gayle Noone-Dean, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012 at Logan Manor in Logan, KS at the age of 84.  She was born Aug. 12, 1928 in Norton County, KS, the daughter of Homer & Nelle (Dean) Thompson.

Survivors include her sons, Tom Noone of Hays, KS and Robert Noone of Logan, KS; daughter, Kay Davis of Catharine, KS; brother, Homer “Pete” Thompson, of Moore, OK; 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, Nov. 9, at 11:00 a.m. in the St. John’s Catholic Church, Logan, with Father George Chalbhagam officiating.  Burial will follow in the Densmore Cemetery, Densmore, KS.

Sarelda Hall

Former Kirwin, KS area resident, Sarelda Hall, of Rosharon, Texas, passed away November 4, 2012 at the age of 89.

Sarelda was born August 17, 1923 in Phillips County, Kansas the daughter of Clarence & Cora (Kirk) Stone.

She was united in marriage to Gene H. Hall on March 16, 1958 in Alma, Nebraska.  He preceded her in death on January 3, 1988.

Sarelda worked many years at the Phillipsburg Social & Rehabilitation Services.

Survivors include her daughter, Cindy Hall of Rosharon, TX and son, Lott Hall of Pearland, TX.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 10, 2012 in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Paul Ferrarone officiating.  Burial will follow in the Alma Cemetery, Alma, Nebraska.

Sarelda will lie in state from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel.

Gilbert  “Gib” Schwartz

Gorham, Kansas – Gilbert “Gib” Schwartz, age 103, died Wednesday, October 31, 2012, at Via Christi Village Care Center, Hays, Kansas.

He was born July 21, 1909, on the family farm South of Gorham, Kansas, to Fred and Anne (Bushell) Schwartz.  He Married Cleo M. (Schritchfield) on June 1, 1938, in Gorham, Kansas.  She died September 16, 2010.

He was lifetime farmer and was one of the founders of the Gorham Community Church.  He enjoyed his family, friends, helping others and fishing.

Survivors include one daughter, Carol Legleiter and husband, Dennis, Gorham, KS; two granddaughters, Tina O’Connor, Victoria, KS, Tammi Leglieter, Gorham, KS; and one great grandson, Dayton Legleiter, Gorham, KS.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one sister, Sylvia Baxter, and one grandson-in-law, John O’Connor.

Services are 2:00 P.M. Saturday, November 3, 2012, at the Gorham Community Church, 101 Clifford Street Gorham, Kansas  67640.  Burial at the Winterset Cemetery, South of Gorham, Kansas. Visitation is from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Ethel Larick

Agra resident, Ethel Larick, passed away Tues., Oct. 30, at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg, KS at the age of 90. She was born in Prairie View, KS on June 21, 1922 to Truman & Violet (Wieczorkowski) Hadley.

Survivors include her brother, John Hadley, of Lawrence, KS and nieces & nephews.

Funeral services will be held Sat., Nov. 3, at 10:00 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Becky Davison officiating. Burial will follow in the West Cedar Cemetery, Phillips County.

Alvin J. “AJ” Schmidtberger

Victoria, Kansas – Alvin J. “AJ” Schmidtberger, age 93, died Tuesday, October 30, 2012, at his home South East of Victoria, Kansas. He was born July 2, 1919, on the family farm South East of Victoria, Kansas, to Michael J. and Katherine (Meier) Schmidtberger. He married Celeste (Sander) on November 7, 1953, in Victoria, Kansas. She died November 19, 2008.

He owned and operated Schmidtberger’s Soil Conservation, for 28 years, and a lifetime farmer. He was a graduate of Victoria High School, a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during WWII. He was very active in soil conservation all of his years in farming and received a state award in 1973. He was a member of the Victoria Volunteer Fire Department for 25 years and served as Fire Chief for five years. A member of St. Fidelis Catholic Church, 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree Assembly Knights of Columbus and a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post No. 1751, all of Victoria, Kansas.

Survivors include one son, Tim Schmidtberger and wife, Pam, Victoria, KS; two brothers, Virgil Schmidtberger, Lawrence, KS; Loren Schmidtberger, New City, New York; one sister, Janice Elliott and husband, Bill, San Francisco, CA; three grandchildren, Amy Sterling and husband, Jeremy, Andy and Tony Schmidtberger; three great grandchildren, Taylor, Abigail and Barrett Sterling.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one son, Greg Schmidtberger died (August 18, 1973), and three sisters, Georgina Schumacher, Alvina Clapperton, and Armella Ricci.

Services are 10:00 A.M. Saturday, November 3, 2012, at St. Fidelis Catholic Church, Victoria, Kansas. Burial in St. Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria, Kansas, with military honors by the Victoria V.F.W. Post No. 1751.

Margaret Lappin

Logan resident, Margaret Lappin, passed away Sat., Oct. 20, at her home in Logan, KS at the age of 95. She was born Feb. 16, 1917 in Logan, the daughter of Fred & Emma (States) Becker. Her husband, Douglas, preceded her in death in 1988.

Survivors include her son, Lowell “L.D.” Lappin of Hays, KS; two daughters, Jerilyn Koskan of Orland Park, IL and Janell Noone of Logan; 8 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Sat., Oct. 27, at 11:00 a.m. in the St. John’s Catholic Church, Logan, KS, with Father George Chalbhagam officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Logan.

Almeda Hoffman

Victoria, Kansas – Almeda Hoffman, age 87, died Monday, October 22, 2012, at Via Christi Village Care Center, Hays, Kansas.

She was born October 11, 1925, in Victoria, Kansas, to Edgar F. and Lydia (Staab) Brungardt. She married Albert R. “Al” Hoffman on April 21, 1950, in Victoria, Kansas. He died April 4, 2008.

She and her husband owned and operated Hoffman’s Dry Goods in Victoria, Kansas for 40 years. In her early years she worked at the Farmers National Bank at the Walker Air Force Base. She was a member of St. Fidelis Catholic Church, Daughter of Isabella and Christian Mothers all of Victoria, Kansas.

Survivors include one son, Don Hoffman and wife Gretta, Hays, KS; one brother, Frank C. Brungardt, Victoria, KS; two sisters, Rosie Schulte and husband Denis, and Betty Basgall, both of Victoria, KS; three sisters-in-law Betty Brungardt, Kathryn Hoffman, both of Hays, KS; Leona Hoffman, Overland Park, KS; three grandchildren Lee Hoffman, Lindsay Hachenberg and husband Glen, Scott Hoffman; four great grandchildren, Aiden, Morgan and Alexandra Hachenberg, and Jace Hoffman.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Edward “Eddie” Brungardt and two brothers-in-law, Melvin Gross and Al Basgall; one sister-in-law, Twila Brungardt .

Albert John “Al” Meier

Hays, Kansas – Albert John “Al” Meier, age 81, died Monday, September 24, 2012, at his daughters home in Longmont, Colorado. He was born June 3, 1931, in Garden City, Kansas, to John and Elizabeth (Younger) Meier. He married Laura Grace (Stillwell) on August 28, 1956, in Garden City, Kansas. She died April 29, 2012.

He was a veteran of the US Air Force and served in French Morocco during the Korean Conflict. He was employed by Dillons for 43 years. He was a Store Manager in Pratt, Great Bend and Store Manager at the North Dillon Store in Hays, Kansas for 20 years. He was a member of the Hays Optimist Club, served on the Hays Airport Board, served on the H.B. Reed Center Board, and was a past president and member of the Hays Chamber of Commerce. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed his friends and family.

Survivors include one son, Greg Meier and wife, Christine, Gunnison, CO; two daughters, Debbie Brown, Longmont, CO; Beth Meier, Lakewood, CO; one sister, Barbara Heili, Scott City, KS; three grandchildren, Chelsea Meier, Zachary Meier and wife Melyssa, Denise Stephenson and David Borden; and two great grandchildren, Devin Sterling and Drake Albert.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Laura Grace, five brothers, John, Martin, Wendell, Bennie and Alvey Meier; and one sister, Mary Knoll; and a son-in-law, Arthur Brown.

Services are 11:00 A.M. Saturday, October 20, 2012, at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays 1919 East 22nd Hays, Kansas 67601. The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 11:00 A.M. Saturday, at the mortuary.
