Wilhelmina Ames

Phillipsburg resident, Wilhelmina Ames, died Saturday, June 23, 2012 in the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg at the age of 93.

She was born January 12, 1919 in Harlan County, NE the daughter of John William & Gretchen (Kampen) Wessels. She was a homemaker.

She was married to Richard H. Ames on August 18, 1939 in Stamford, NE. He preceded her in death in 2004. She was also preceded in death by a son, LeRoy Hans Ames in 1945.

Survivors include a son, Dick Ames & wife, Hazel of Long Island, KS; daughter, Grace Grau & husband, Melvin of Phillipsburg; 5 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; and 2 great great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, 1115 2nd Street, Phillipsburg, Kansas 67661, with Pastor Lorna Paulus officiating. Burial will follow in the Long Island Cemetery, Long Island, KS.

Mrs. Ames will lie in state from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday; 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Tuesday and until service time Wednesday at the funeral home. The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home for visitation.

 Regina Leiker

Regina Leiker, age 93, longtime Hays resident, died Friday, June 22, 2012, at her son’s home in Munjor, Kansas.

Regina was born March 8, 1919, in Liebenthal, Kansas, to John H. and Margaret (Kuhn) Kreutzer. She married Henry S. Leiker May 3, 1938, in Munjor, Kansas. He died February 4, 2002. She was a farmer’s wife and a homemaker. She was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella, Perpetual Adorers of Hays and the Christian Mothers of St. Francis Church of Munjor.

Survivors include her sons, John H. Leiker and his wife, JoAnn of Arvada, Colo., Alan H. Leiker and his wife, Janet of Hays and Mark H. Leiker and his wife, Dora of Munjor, Kansas; daughters, DeAnn Schmidt and her husband, Adolph of Hays, Ella Mueggenberg and her husband, Louis of Carroll, Iowa, and Jane Leiker of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 13 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Paul, Richard, Leo, Cyrene, Brother Francis, Otto, and Martin Kreutzer; sisters, Monica Wolf, Sister Margaret Kreutzer, and infant sister, Cecilia Kreutzer.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 26, 2012, at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 1800 Milner in Hays. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery in Hays. There will be a Perpetual Adorers rosary at 4:00 p.m., a combined Daughters of Isabella rosary and Christian Mothers rosary at 6:00 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 6:30 p.m. on Monday at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine. Helen Harris

Former Phillipsburg, KS resident, Helen Harris of Indiana, PA, died Thursday, April 26, 2012 at the age of 95.

She was born May 3, 1916, to Albert & Elsie Ward Standley, in Lucas, KS.

Helen married Lawrence A. Harris in 1936. The owned and operated the Phillipsburg Cleaners in Phillipsburg until 1984. Lawrence preceded her in death in 1995.

Survivors include daughter, Jeannette Frank of Indiana, PA; 2 grandchildren; 4 great granddaughters; one sister, Ilene Deatherage of Russell, KS; and a sister-in-law, Berneta Ziegler of Lincoln, KS.

Cremation was planned. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 25, 2012 in the United Presbyterian Church in Phillipsburg, KS with Pastor Chris Davis officiating. A private inturnment will be held in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.

Vona L. Hoppe

Phillipsburg resident, Vona L. Hoppe, passed away Monday, June 18, at the Phillips County Retirement Center in Phillipsburg at the age of 79. She was born July 31, 1932 in Eakley, CO to Elwood & Luella (Miller) Stone. Vona worked as a secretary at the hospital.

Vona Hoppe is survived by one daughter, Karen Bruning, of Phillipsburg; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Cremation was planned. A memorial service will be held Thurs., June 21, at 11:00 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor LeRoy Herder officiating.

Friends may sign her book on Wednesday from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

She was born July 23, 1984, in Hays, Kansas, to Philip D. and Torrie  (Weber) Beougher. She married Lloyd C. Symns on May 5, 2012, at Hays, Kansas.

She was a homemaker, a 2002 graduate of Hays High School, attended North Central Kansas Technical College and Fort Hays State University.
She was a wonderful mother and enjoyed her nieces and nephews. Survivors include her husband, Lloyd C. Symns, and her son, Brayden Hines, of the home; her father, Philip Beougher and wife, Dee, Hays, KS; her mother, Torrie Weber and companion, Shane Jones, Hays, KS; grandparents, Ross and Scharlett (Rodgers) Weber, Topeka, KS; step grandmother, Charlotta Klaus, Hays. Victoria, Kansas – Theresa M. Schippers, age 77, died Friday, June 15, 2012, at Stormont-Vail Hospital, Topeka, Kansas. She was born January 30, 1935, in Hays, Kansas, to John M. and Mary T. (Herl) Pfannenstiel.

She married Paul O. Schippers on October 22, 1962, in Hays, Kansas. She was a bookkeeper for Schippers farm, a homemaker, a member of St. Fidelis Catholic Church, Christian Mothers and Daughters of Isabella all of Victoria, Kansas. She was a 1953 graduate of Girls Catholic High in Hays, Kansas. She was a spiritual inspiration for many.

Survivors include her husband, Paul O. Schippers, of the home; one daughter, Paula Schumacher and husband, Steve, Topeka, KS; one son, Troy Schippers and wife, Geralyn, Victoria, KS; two brothers, Henry Pfannenstiel and wife, Mary, Hays, KS; Danny Pfannenstiel and wife, Margie, Munjor, KS; one sister, Rosie Dome, Basehor, KS; six grandchildren, Wade and Wyatt Schumacher, Sara, Emily, Gracyn and Claire Schippers.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and four brothers, Ted, Bob, Jake and Edward Pfannenstiel; seven sisters, Lucy Schmidtberger, Virginia Dreiling, Ida Dinkel, Minnie Berens, Eleanor Schumacher, Armella Ross, and Louise Steckline; one infant brother, and two infant sisters.

Pierce Wesley “Wes” Wikoff

Hays, Kansas – Pierce Wesley “Wes” Wikoff, age 77, died Saturday, June 9, 2012, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas. He was born February 15, 1935, in Alamo, Texas, to Pierce W. and Gertrude (Phillips) Wikoff.

He married Jane (Stahn) on June 12, 1960, in Orleans, NE. He grew up in Lyons, Kansas, graduated from Hays High School in 1953, and graduated from Fort Hays State College in 1957, with a degree in biology. He was a U S Army veteran and served in Okinawa, Japan. During
his college years he worked as a park ranger in Yellowstone National Park. He taught math and biology for three years at Utica and Natoma High
Schools.

In 1962, he started working for the Kansas Fish and Game Commission, he was Game Warden for 26 years based in Hoxie, Kansas, and an Assistant Supervisor for Law Enforcement for the Hays, Kansas Regional Office for 9 years, and retired in 1997. While in Hoxie, Kansas, he was an EMT and taught Hunters Safety Classes all over the state of Kansas. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, and served as a Deacon and Elder, a member of the Hays City Gun Club, Pheasants Forever, and an avid outdoorsman.

Survivors include his wife Jane Wikoff, of the home; two sons, Phil Wikoff and wife, Janine, Hillsboro, Oregon; Craig Wikoff and wife,
Jessica, Garden City, KS; three daughters, Barb Shelton, Cheyenne, WY; Kirsten Cline and husband Rick, Weskan, KS; Jennifer LaCicero and husband Patrick, Fort Worth, TX; one brother-in-law, Tom Nulton, Hoisington, KS; and 13 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Phyllis Nulton.

A memorial service will be at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, June 14, 2012, at the First Presbyterian Church, 2900 Hall and inturnment at Fort Hays

Anna Mae Pfannenstiel, age 71, of Munjor, Kansas died Friday, June 8, 2012, at the KU Medical Center in Kansas City.

Anna Mae was born September 13, 1940, in Schoenchen, Kansas to Joe and Catherine (Stoecklein) Zimmerman. She married Vernon A. Pfannenstiel October 8, 1960, in Munjor.

She was a homemaker and a member of the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and the Christian Mothers, all of Munjor.

Survivors include her husband, Vernon, of the home; five sons, Kevin of Hays, Keith and wife, Jody of Hays, Vernon Jr. and wife, Autumn of Lenexa, Kansas, Greg and his wife, Rene of Hays and Troy and his wife, Laura of Orion, Illinois; brothers, Warren T. Zimmerman and his wife, Sheilia of Lakewood, Colo. and Willard Zimmerman of Hays; a sister, Bernie Weaver and her husband, Frank of Des Moines, Iowa; 11 grandchildren,

He was born December 7, 1932, in Munjor, Kansas, to Jake and Ludwina (Leiker) Befort. He married Twila (Goetz) on October 6, 1956, in Gorham, Kansas.

He grew up in Munjor, Kansas, and attended Schoenchen High School and Hays High School. He was a U S Army veteran and served during the Korean Conflict. He owned M & V Floor Covering in Hays, Kansas, for 45 years and retired in 2006. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Schoenchen Knights of Columbus, Hays V.F.W. Post #7096 and an avid Sports fan.

Survivors include his wife, Twila Befort, of the home; two sons, Doug Befort and wife, Sydney, Morrison, CO; Daryl Befort, Hays, KS; two brothers, Vernon Befort and wife, Verna Hays, KS; Earl Befort and Wife, Mary Ann, Munjor, KS; and one step granddaughter, Danique Duran.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Donald Befort.

G. Donald Wasinger

Hays, Kansas – G. Donald Wasinger, age 88, died Sunday, June 3, 2012, at Via Christi Village Care Center Hays, Kansas.

He was born March 17, 1924,in Hays, Kansas, to George and Agnes (Lang) Wasinger. He married Harriet (Schmidt) on June 21, 1948, in Hays, Kansas. He was a Linotype Operator for the Hays Daily News for 32 years and retired in 1980. He was a US Navy Veteran served in WWII as a Petty Officer 1st Class, a member of the Hays V.F.W. Post No 9076, and a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church both of Hays, Kansas. In 1980, he and his wife moved to Aurora CO. where he operated a small printing business and make draperies. In 1994 they returned back to Hays, Kansas. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching old westerns and traveling in their motor home.

Survivors include his wife, Harriet Wasinger, of the home; two sons, Dave Wasinger and wife, Karen, Rob Wasinger and wife, Joanne, both of Hays, KS; one sister, Mary Ellen Pfeifer and husband Joe, Grover MO; six grandchildren, Austin Wasinger and wife, Krista, Lynae Wasinger, Kyle Wasinger, Andy Wasinger, Katie Wasinger and John Paul Wasinger; two great granddaughters, Bayley Wasinger and Myley Wasinger.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Neal, Howard, Tom Wasinger; one sister, Arleen Tunnel.

Donald H. Witt

Hays, Kansas – Donald H. Witt, age 77, died Tuesday, May 29, 2012, at the Golden Living Center in Wilson, Kansas, after a short illness. He was born December 10, 1934, on the farm North of Walker, Kansas, to Herman and Clara Agnes (Wittman) Witt.

He attended the Enterprise School North of Walker, Kansas. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served during the Korean-Conflict. He lived in Ellis before moving to Hays in 1997. He worked for several oil field companies and was a cross-country driver for a trucking firm, where he visited every state in the country. He loved to be outdoors, and enjoyed playing horseshoes in the park, and taking his dog for walks.

Survivors include one daughter, Melissa Witt, and one granddaughter, Bailey Jo Greenwood, both of FL; two sisters, Twila Froelich, Russell, KS; Alice Presti, Waltham, MA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Harold Witt and Robert Witt; and two sisters, Doris Dreiling and Betty Wall.

Services are 10:00 A.M. Monday, June 4, 2012, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and Inurnment is at St. Mary’s Cemetery, both in Gorham, Kansas. The family will receive friends from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M. Douglas O. “Doug” VanLoenen

Hays, Kansas – Douglas O. “Doug” VanLoenen, age 70, died Tuesday, May 29, 2012, at his home in Hays, Kansas. He was born May 27, 1942, on the farm at Bogue, Kansas, to William and Evelyn M. (Trott) VanLoenen. He married Lillian Diehl on November 21,1971, in Hays, Kansas.

He was a U S Marine Corps veteran and served during Vietnam. He owned and operated V and F Oil company and was a Senior Claims Adjuster for National Farmers Union Insurance Company until his retirement in 2002. He was a1960 graduate of Bogue High School and a 1969 graduate of Fort Hays State College. He lived in Arvada, Colorado and McPherson before moving to Hays in 1986.

Survivors include his wife, Lillian, of the home; three sons, Matthew, Andrew and Jason, all of Hays, KS; one daughter, Melissa Seltmann and husband, Ryan, Hays, KS; one granddaughter, Mallory Grace Seltmann; one brother, Richard VanLoenen, Morrison, CO; one brother-in-law, Jim Ryan, Salina, KS; and one sister-in-law, Liz VanLoenen, Bogue, KS.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Melvin, Dave and Floyd VanLoenen; and one sister, Marilyn Ryan.

She was a homemaker and moved to Hays in 2002 from California, Survivors include three daughters, Lynn Gail Reese, Rome, New York; Debra Purviance and husband, Rod, Hays, KS; Tamara Olson-Herbert, Sydney, Australia ; six grandchildren, six great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Col. Wendell Dale Olson; and one brother, Richard Vehle.

Ollie Irene Smith – Speed, KS

Speed resident, Ollie Irene Smith, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, May 27, 2012 at the age of 75.

Ollie was born July 27, 1936 the daughter of Fred L. & Wilma Fay (Weaver) Albright.

She was united in marriage to Lonnie L. Smith on December 25, 1956 in Phillipsburg.  He survives.

Other survivors include her two sisters, Lorraine Pinkerton of Denver, CO and Marge Hembree of Garden City, KS and a host of nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 1, 2012 in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg with Pastor Joel Hiesterman officiating.

Betty Pratt

Henderson, Nevada – Betty Pratt, age 83, died February 8, 2012, at Odyssey Hospice in Las Vegas, Nevada after an 11 year struggle with Alzheimer’s. She was born October 29, 1928, in Tenafly, New Jersey, to Arthur and Mabel Jacobus Seward. She married Normand Pratt on June 27, 1954 at Ellis, Kansas.

Betty was raised in Tenafly, New Jersey, and graduated from Tenafly High School where she was senior class president. She will always be remembered for her beautiful and warm smile. Betty took great pleasure in being a mother and homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Normand Pratt, Henderson, Nevada; one son, Bill Pratt of Roseburg, Oregon; two daughters, Susan Gordon and husband, John of Huntington Beach, California; Carol Jones of Henderson, Nevada; two sisters, Kay Seward of New York City, New York, Janet Birkins and her husband, Rodney of Oquossoc, Maine; six grandchildren, Lindsay Pratt, Alex Pratt, Garrett Jones, Wyatt Jones, John Gordon III and Shannon Thogmartin and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, and one son, Steven Warren Pratt.

A graveside service and Inurnment will be at 11:30 A.M. Saturday, June 2, 2012, at Mount Allen Cemetery, Hays, Kansas. Cline’s Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas, 67601 is in charge of arrangements. Condolences can be sent via e-mail to [email protected].
