Arlene Rose Ruder

Arlene Rose (Wiesner) Ruder, age 76, of Hays, passed away Wednesday, March 14th, 2012 at Hays Medical Center. She was born April 4, 1935 in Hays, Kansas to Leo and Josephine (Smith) Wiesner. She graduated from Girl’s Catholic High in 1953. She married Virgil “Hess” Ruder on April 23, 1955 in Hays. He preceded her in death on December 9, 1994. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays

She is survived by a daughter, Lisa Gerstner and husband Mark of Phoenix, Arizona; a son, Thomas Ruder, two grandsons, Scott and Ryan Gerstner and two sisters, Phyllis Rizzo and husband Rick of Phoenix and Jan Bear of Prescott, AZ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hess and her parents.

Private family graveside services took place Friday, March 16th, 2012 at St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays, Kansas. Arrangements in care of Brock’s North Hill Chapel 2509 Vine Hays, KS. 67601.

Albert S. Bieker

Albert S Bieker, age 88, of Ellis, passed away Friday, March 16, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Society, Hays. He was born September 16, 1923 in Ellis to Sylvester and Barbara (Aschenbrenner) Bieker. He married Bertha Erbert on November 16, 1943 in Ellis. She preceded him in death on March 4, 2012.

Albert was a farmer and mechanic. He had worked at Fondoble Motor Sales and Bob’s Repair both of Ellis. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Ellis. He enjoyed collecting John Deere memorabilia and spending time on the farm.

He is survived by three sons, Richard, James and Michael Bieker all of Ellis; a brother, Joe Erbert of Ellis; two sisters, Mary Kuhn of Hays and Shirley Pitner of Atwood. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Brandie Bieker of Hays, Christopher Bieker of Lawrence, Kimberly Bieker of Topeka and David Bieker of Bazine as well as two great grandchildren, Abby and Laura Bieker of Lawrence.

He was preceded in death by his wife, two sons, David and Robert Bieker and two brothers, Martin and John Bieker.

Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis. Burial will follow services in St. Mary’s cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday 6:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. at Keithley Funeral Chapel 400 E. 17th Ellis, KS. 67637. A parish vigil service will be at 7:00 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Stella Sander

Victoria, Kansas – Stella Sander, age 88, died Saturday, March 3, 2012, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.

She was born January 4, 1924, at Walker, Kansas, to William and Margaret (Hefner)- Thomas Schrant. She married Edwin A. “Eddie” Sander on May 16, 1949, at Walker, Kansas.

She was a homemaker and worked 19 years at Fort Hays State University, Hays, Kansas, in the food service/Snack Bar at the Memorial Union. She grew up south of Walker, Kansas, and attended a country school for eight years. She was a nanny for the Clem Polcyn Family for a number of years. She made her home on the farm, west of Victoria, Kansas, and moved to St. John’s Health Care Center at Victoria, Kansas, 2 ½ years ago. She was a member of St. Fidelis Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella and V.F.W. Auxiliary all of Victoria, Kansas.

Survivors include one son, James “Jim” Sander and wife, Maggie, Mifflintown, Penn; one daughter, Judy Dreiling and husband, Paul, Victoria, KS; one brother, Paul Schrant, St. John’s of Hays Health Care Center and wife, Alice, Walker, KS; two brothers-in-law, Leo Sander and wife, Mary Dean, Wichita, KS; Gilbert Sander and wife, Kathleen, Great Bend, KS; one sister- in-law, Agnes Schrant, Hays, KS; four grandchildren, Jacque Schmidt and husband, Jim; Janea Dinkel and husband, Jay; Mike Sander; Michele Rapp and husband, Josh; eight great grandchildren, Jarron Schmidt, Jillian Schmidt, Jalyn Dinkel, Jaxon Dinkel, Juliana Dinkel, Jaidyn Dinkel, Eddie Sander and Ethan Rapp. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother, William Schrant; one sister, Irene Brown; two half brothers, Ben Thomas and Lawrence Thomas; and one step-brother, Ed Schrant.

Bernice Rupp
Hays, Kansas – Bernice Rupp, age 83, died Wednesday, February 29, 2012, at St. Francis South Campus Hospital, Indianapolis, Indiana. She was born April 20, 1928, at Emmeram, Kansas, to August V. and Marie (Always) Weigel. She married Linus J. Rupp on November 9, 1948, at Emmeram, Kansas, and later separated.

She was a graduate of Victoria High School and lived in Colorado and Wyoming before moving back to Hays in 1977. She was a waitress most all of her life and worked at the Golden Ox and Everybody’s restaurants both in Hays and retired in 1994. She played in a polka dance band for a number of years, she enjoyed word search puzzles, playing bingo and the Hays singles dances. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and V.F.W. Auxiliary both of Hays, Kansas, and the Daughters of Isabella, Gorham, Kansas.

Sueellen K. “Sue” Pfeifer
Sueellen K. “Sue” Pfeifer, 69, Hays, died March 2, 2012, at her home. She was born August 28, 1942, in Hays to Michael D. and Leenore (Bieker) Billinger. She married Al F. Pfeifer on October 26, 1990.

Sue graduated from Girls Catholic High School, attended Creighton University, and graduated from Fort Hays State University. She worked for the Kansas Department of Revenue for 20 years and was co-owner of the Ellis County Star. She was a volunteer at Hays Medical Center and for the AARP Tax Aide Program. She was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, St. Nicholas Ladies Guild and Perpetual Eucharist Adoration. Although Sue grew up in Hays, she moved away shortly after high school. Upon her parents’ retirement from the Ellis County Star, she and her daughters returned to the Hays area and she, along with her brother Kim, purchased the business. She served as editor of the weekly newspaper and spent several years as a local reporter. This was a dream come true to Sue because she was an enthusiast about writing. Eventually, the decision was made to sell the newspaper part of the business, and she went to work for the State.

In 1985 she met Al Pfeifer on the dance floor and they discovered that they both shared a love for dancing. Five years later that love turned into a
marriage. Their union united their 5 children who eventually provided them with 20 grandchildren who loved to visit nanny. There was never a dull moment in their household, especially during the holiday season. They enjoyed traveling and spending time with their family and friends, but their plans for their retirement years were cut short due to the cancer that Sue struggled with during the last 8 months. Her peaceful nature and faith in God has been her strength throughout her illness. Sue will be cherished always and greatly missed by all that knew and loved her.

Survivors include her husband, Al, of the home; two daughters, Gretchen Brown and husband Tom, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Joelle Lehman, Hays; three stepdaughters, Dana Pfeifer, Hays, Misty Shepker and husband Matthew, Overland Park and Tamie Dragone, Council Grove; two brothers, Mike “Mickey” Billinger and wife Susie, Kim Billinger and wife Tina, a sister-in-law Betty Befort and husband Jerry, all of Hays.

Sue, was known as “Nanny” to the following grandchildren: Lacey Thompson, Robert Riedinger, Taylor Riedinger, Reagan Riedinger, Caleb  Riedinger, Ryan Riedinger, all of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Kiefer Schmidt, Kade Schmidt, Kameron Schmidt and Carley Lehman of Hays, and step grandchildren: Scot Brown and Hannah Brown of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Jeffrey Pfeifer, Jillian Augustine and Javian Augustine of Hays, Noah
Shepker and Isabella Shepker of Overland Park, Brooke Dragone, Elle Dragone and Dani Dragone of Council Grove. She was preceded in death by her parents, father and mother-in-law Alois and Mae (Windholz) Pfeifer.

Services will be 10:00 AM Monday, March 5, 2012, at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery in Hays. Arlene Maddox

Hays, Kansas – Arlene Maddox, age 82, died Monday, February 27, 2012, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.

She was born August 16, 1929, at Dodge City, Kansas, to Elliott A. and Lodema (Clawson) Gumm. She married Wendell Lawrence Maddox on April 1, 1951, at Kingsdown, Kansas. He died November 3, 2011.

She attended both Kingsdown Grade and High Schools and delivered the 1948 Senior Class Speech at graduation. She was a 1950 graduate of Dodge City Junior College. She was a teacher in Mineola, Kansas, for two years and was a police dispatcher in Dodge City for two years. She moved to Garden City, Kansas in 1954 as a homemaker, she was very active in community organizations, bridge club, and the Boy Scouts. She served at different levels in Scouting and was the Corporate Secretary of Santa Fe Trail Council Office in Garden City for 10 years. She was very active in The Eastern Star in Finney and Ellis counties as past presidents at local and state levels. She moved to Hays in 1979 and was a para professional for the Handicap Students in USD 489, at Lincoln Grade School until she retired in 2000. She served as the “Welcome Wagon Lady for Hays” for a number of years, the past president of both the Cancer Council of Ellis County and the American Red Cross of Ellis County.

Survivors include three sons, Lyndell Eugene Maddox and wife Linda, The Woodlands, TX; Owen Dean Maddox, MD, Boston, MA; Arlan Lee Maddox and partner, Donnie R. Gayfield, San Francisco, CA; KS; one brother, Gerald R. Gumm and wife Enid, Dodge City, KS; two grandchildren, Weston Lawrence Maddox and Madison Alexa Maddox; and many loved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, Dr. Robert D. Gumm and Keith E. Gumm.

Hays, Kansas – Marcella Klein, age 84, died Wednesday, February 22, 2012, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.

She was born October 27, 1927 on the farm in Loretto, KS, to Anton and Pauline (Hertel) Engel. She married Sylvester Klein on September 15, 1948 in Loretto, Kansas. He died December 17, 1987.

She was a lifetime farmer and housewife residing in Pfeifer, KS for 50 years. She worked at Travenol in Hays, KS, for 17 years and was a Senior Companion at Hays Medical Center for 10 years. She was a former member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Loretto , KS, and Holy Cross Catholic Church, Pfeifer, KS. She moved to Hays, Kansas in 1990 and was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, and was a member of the Daughter’s of Isabella Circle #254 both in Hays, Kansas.

Survivors include one son, Jerry L. Klein, Pfeifer, KS; three daughters, Connie Faulkner Klein, Linda Staab and husband, Robert, both of Hays, KS; Elaine Scheck Meyer and husband John, Great Bend, KS; one stepson, Floyd Klein ,Victoria, KS; two sisters, Jane M. Penka, Palm Springs, CA and Sister Mary Rose Engel O.P., Great Bend, KS, 10 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Randy L. Huff

Hays, Kansas – Randy L. Huff age 57, died Monday, February 20, 2012, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas. He was born March 29,1954, at Nyssa, OR. to William L. and Mildred Pearl (Hughes) Huff. He married Donna (Schneider) in 1974 and later separated, he then married Pasty (Witthuhn) in 1993.

He was a 1972 graduate of Otis-Bison High School and attended Hutchinson Junior College. He worked for Ochs Inc, at Otis, Kansas, was a
manager of the 11th Frame Club in Ellis, Kansas. He was a foreman for B and R/Roofmasters, a salesman for LaRue Coffee, and was a past owner of the Horseshoe all in Hays, Kansas. He was active in the Hays Darts League and Hays Softball League and a avid Fort Hays Sate University Sports fan.

Survivors include his wife, Patsy Huff, Hays Good Samaritan Center; three daughters, Heather Lyman and husband Chad, Ellis, KS; Julie Huff,

She was born April 7, 1946, at Brooklyn, New York, to Anthony “Tony” and Jean M. (Quillen) Walter. She married her sweetheart Kenneth “Pat” Rigby on September 29, 1973, at Hays, Kansas.

She attended the Catholic Church, she was a homemaker, a stay at home mom, and a Day Care provider for over 20 years, earning her special and well deserved title of “Aunt Paula” to at least 11 kids.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth “Pat” Rigby, of the home; one son, Leon Rigby and wife, Karen, Berryton, KS; three daughters, Connie Davis and husband, Tom, Soldotna, AK; Connie Winters and husband, Alan, Topeka, KS; Cathy Rigby, Oklahoma City, OK; one brother, Joseph and wife, Jan, Hays, KS; two sisters, Catherine Hupach and husband, George, Hutchinson, KS; Betty Ballard and husband, Mike, Victoria, KS; a nephew and niece raised by Paula and Pat, Marc Younger and wife, Janell, Hays, KS; and Christina Walter, Hays, KS. seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, several nephews and nieces. Alene Kaye Meskimen
Hays, Kansas – Alene Kaye Meskimen, age 58, died Thursday, February 9, 2012, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas. She was born September 15, 1953, at Garden City, Kansas, to Allan D. and Mollie E. (Sewell) Meskimen.

She was graduate of Hays High School and received her Master’s Degree in English at Fort Hays State University both in Hays, Kansas. She and her mother owned House of Color Gifts Boutique in Hays, Kansas until the mid 1970’s. She was a school teacher for a few years in Saint Francis, Kansas. She was a corporate secretary for Big Cheese Pizza for one year and worked in the last Census Bureau Office both in Hays, Kansas.

Survivors include her significant other, Charles S. Riedell, of the home; three foster daughters, Doreen Kinderknecht, Maggie Conant, Shanon Owens, all of Hays, KS; one cousin, Connie Meskimen, Little Rock, ARK; one foster granddaughter, Savannah Desbin, Damar, KS. She was preceded in death by her parents.

LeRoy W. Brungardt
Ellis, Kansas – LeRoy W. Brungardt, age 78, died Sunday, January 29, 2012, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.

He was born November 13, 1933, at Victoria, Kansas, to Leo A. and Irene (Staab) Brungardt. He married Twila Mae (Zimmerman) on April 13, 1953 at Schoenchen, Kansas.

She died November 17, 1999. He then married Suzanne L. (Brough) on August 17, 2002 at Elizabeth, Colorado.

He owned LeRoy’s Welding in Hays, Kansas, Colorado, and currently South of Ellis, Kansas for 25 years. He was a machinist at Travenol Labs. in Hays, for 15 years and he and his first wife Twila owned Royal-T Cleaners in Hays, Kansas, for 10 years. He was a1951 graduate of Hays High School, a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, both of Hays, Kansas.

He was a member of Schoenchen Knights of Columbus Council 4166 and served as a past Grand Knight. He was a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Bishop Cunningham Assembly No. 282 and he was currently serving as the District Deputy No. 046.

Shirley Ann Jordan
Hays, Kansas – Shirley Ann Jordan, age 78, died Wednesday, January 25, 2012, at St. John’s of Hays Health Care Center, Hays, Kansas. She was born June 24, 1933, at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to Ed and Pearl (Bryarly) Haney. She married Marion Jordan on October 18, 1952, at Clayton, New Mexico.

She grew up in Russell, Kansas, and was a 1951 graduate of Russell High School. She was a graduate of Fort Hays State College Hays, Kansas, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. She was a school teacher for 32 years and retired in 1993 then moved to Hays, Kansas. Her teaching career included school districts at: Lincoln, Turon, Preston, Palco Liberal, Overbrook, Zurich and substitute teaching at Plainville, Kansas. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Hays, Kansas, KPERS and Theta Sorority. The last fifteen months she has been a resident at St. John’s of Hays Health Care Center, Hays, Kansas.

Survivors include her husband, Marion Jordan, of the home; two sons, Brad Jordan, Hays, KS; Greg Jordan and wife, Barb, Laramie, WY; three grandsons, Zach Jordan, Austin Jordan and Alex Jordan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother, Robert Haney.

Services are 10:00 A.M. Monday, January 30, 2012, at the First United Methodist Church Hays, Kansas. Burial at Fort Hays Memorial Garden Cemetery, Hays, Kansas. Visitation is from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Mary Louise Dreiling
Victoria, Kansas – Mary Louise Dreiling, age 82, died Wednesday, January 25, 2012, at her daughter’s home in Selden, Kansas.

She was born September 9, 1929, at Vincent, Kansas, to Frank G. and Angela (Weigel) VonFeldt. She married Herbert F. “Herb” Dreiling on April 25, 1949, at Vincent, Kansas. He died May 5, 2001.

She was a homemaker, farmers wife, she was a cook at the Main Street Café in Victoria and spent her lifetime in Victoria, Kansas. She was a member of St. Fidelis Catholic Church, Victoria, Kansas, and she moved to her daughter’s in Selden, Kansas, 11 months ago.

Victoria – William Richard “Bill” Schrant, age 47, died Wednesday, January 18, 2012, at his home in Victoria, Kansas. He was born August 31, 1964, at Hays, Kansas, to Paul and Alice M. (Rupp) Schrant.

He was raised in Walker, Kansas and was a 1983 graduate of Victoria High School. He was a veteran of US Marine Corps and served during Desert Storm tour. He worked in the oil fields, at Hess Services and at A-1 Plank. He was a member of St Ann’s Catholic Church, Walker, Kansas, a member of the Victoria Knights of Columbus, Victoria V.F.W. Post # 1751, and he moved to Victoria in 1994. Survivors include his parents, Paul S. and Alice M. Schrant, Walker, KS; five sisters, Marilyn Joy and husband, George, Hays, KS; Lucy Conness and husband, Dave, WaKeeney, KS; Marjorie Straub and husband, Rick, Walker, KS; Patricia Anschutz, Hays, KS; Pamela Irwin and husband, Darren, Salina, KS; several nieces, nephews and great nephews. Gerald R. “Jerry” Kline

LaCrosse – Gerald R. “Jerry” Kline, age 80, died Thursday, January 12, 2012, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas. He was born November 12, 1931, at LaCrosse, Kansas, to Edmond and Charlet (Schaffer) Kline. He married Mary Anne (Taylor) on April 24, 1952, at LaCrosse, Kansas.

He was a veteran of the U .S. Army and served during the Korean Conflict. A member of the Second (Indian Head) Division Association, Hays American Legion, Hays V.F.W., and attended St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays, Kansas. He was raised in LaCrosse, Kansas and owned Jerry’s Tavern, Kline’s Radiator Repair, from 1953 to 1965 and the Wishbone Café all in LaCrosse, Kansas from 1965 to 1969. He was a Coordinator for Nickerson Farms and was a manager of Russell Nickerson Farms from 1970 to 1974. He moved to Hays, Kansas in 1973 He then worked for the State of Kansas/Health and Environment Department as a Food and Lodging Inspector for 17 years and retired in 1994.

Survivors include, his wife, Mary Anne Kline, of the home; one son, Mike Kline, Hays, KS; two daughters, Debbie Leiker and husband, Ron, Lyons, KS; Susan Willming and husband, Kent, Hays, KS; three sisters, Bernice Stegman and husband, Sy, Enid, OK; Shirley Urban, LaCrosse, KS; Eileen Love and husband, Jack, Great Bend, KS; four grandchildren, Lachelle Spann and husband, Shawn, Latasha Southern and husband, Bryce, Brett Leiker and wife, Andrea, Brian Leiker and wife, Kalie; nine great grandchildren, Nicole, Austin and Kelsi Spann; Brock Southern; Ashley, Brayden, Aubrey and Brody Leiker; and Jade Leiker. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother Gene Kline.

Burial in LaCrosse City Cemetery, LaCrosse, Kansas, with military honors by the Hays V.F.W./American Legion. A Vigil services is at 6:00 P.M. Sunday at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays 1919 East 22nd Street Hays, Kansas 67601.
