David Jacob Reisig

David Jacob Reisig, 71, of Russell, died October 10, 2019.

He was born December 24, 1947, in Russell, Kansas, to Jacob D. Reisig and Olga Marie Steponick. David graduated from Russell High School in 1965. While achieving his bachelor’s degree in Agronomy from Kansas State University, he met and fell in love with Pamela Kaye Weckman, of Oskaloosa, Kansas. They were married January 26, 1969, and enjoyed 50 years of marriage with three vow renewals over the years.

In the early 1970s, David served as an officer in the United States Air Force Pararescue, providing long distance ocean recovery rescue missions. In 1974, David brought his family back to Russell to farm.

In the early 1980s, he and Pam started Reisig Seeds, a business that sold seed wheat and other crop seed to farmers in Kansas and to the wheat grass industry nationwide.

In 2011, David and his wife were awarded the 2010 Kansas Master Farmer and Master Farm Homemaker award for their work and success in agriculture and their service to the local community. David was an active member of the Kansas Crop Improvement Association, and a founding member of the Sunrise Kiwanis in Russell. He gave of his time to the Russell Future Farmers of America and his church. More recently, David enjoyed spending time at their vacation home in St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and watching his grandchildren grow up.

David leaves his daughter Heather of Russell, KS; his daughter Erica and her husband Jiri of Petaluma, CA; and his grandchildren David and Dahlia, also of Petaluma. David was predeceased by his wife Pamela in August 2019.

A celebration of life service will be held for David and his wife Pamela on November 16, 2019, at noon at the Elks lodge in Russell, KS.

Jamie Lynn (Freeman) Kyger

Jamie Lynn (Freeman) Kyger, age 47 of Lebanon, MO passed away on October 22nd 2019. She was born in Olathe, KS on June 2nd 1972. She married Mark Kyger on December 31 2009. Jamie had 6 children: Ember Meadows, Natasha Meadows, Sahara Freeman, Shawn Freeman, Kirsten Kyger, and Landon Kyger. She had 14 grandchildren. Jamie was always joking and really enjoyed life. She stole the hearts of many.

Her Memorial Service will be on her birthday in 2020.

Amazing doesn’t begin to explain how much you meant to us. Amazing is just a word, but amazing you were. The love you shared, the laughs you gave. We understand death only after it has placed its hand on someone you love! Death leaves a heart ache no one can heal , Love leaves a memory no one can steal. Mary Alice Gottschalk

Mary Alice Gottschalk, age 91, of Hill City, Kansas passed from this life on Sunday, October 27, 2019 at Brookdale of McPherson, Kansas.

She was born January 27, 1928 In Hays, Kansas and was the daughter of Martin and Elizabeth (Jacobs) Basgall. She married George Gottschalk Jr. in 1949. He passed away on April 25, 1990.

Mary Alice spent her childhood in Hays, Kansas. She attended St Joseph Catholic Grade School and Girls Catholic High School. She graduated from Fort Hays State University in 1949 with a BS in education. She received her reading specialist certification and then her Master’s degree in secondary education in 1976. She was active in college activities including Newman Club, Student Council, Mortar Board, student college newspaper. She was a life member of Alpha Gamma Delta social sorority.

She moved to Hill City with her husband in 1959 where they owned Jr’s home furniture company where she worked in the business as the secretary. In 1974 she was employed as a teacher in USD 281 Hill City High School teaching there until 1996 during which time she belonged to in a National Education Association, KNEA, IRA (International Reading Association) Kira and Missouri Valley Adult Education Association. She chaired the right to read program in HCHS was KAYS sponsor then JR/SR class sponsor.

Mary Alice taught the GED program for Colby Community College and served as the outreach coordinator for 30 years. She belonged to Helios Federated Club in Hill City and she was employed as a salesperson for Fred Pratt Real Estate. Her first love was education and as outreach coordinator she helped to give everyone in Graham County the opportunity to take classes and gain an education.

She is survived by her son, George Martin Gottschalk and wife Lori of Palmdale, California; two daughters, Gina Marie Deutscher and husband Bruce of Stockton, Kansas and Gwyn Elizabeth Muto and husband Bob of McPherson; six grandsons George E. Gottschalk of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Kyle Cody and Casey Deutscher of Stockton, and Brenton and Adam Boyer of McPherson.

She was is preceded in death by her parents; two brothers Edward and Gilbert Basgall and four sisters Bina Wangerin, Dorothy Gilmore, Valerie Basgall and Norma Jean Benoit.

Funeral services will be 11 AM Saturday November the 2, 2019 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Hill City. Burial will be at 3 PM in the St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays.

Visitation will be Saturday 9:00 AM until 10:30 AM when a rosary will be recited all at the church.

Memorials are suggested to Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hill City or towards scholarships at Hill City High School.

Ronald T. Mackey

Ronald T. Mackey, 74, of Longmont passed away October 25, 2019, at Willowbrook Place in Littleton, CO.

He was born March 20, 1945, in Henderson, Kentucky, to John S. and Bernice J. (Walker) Mackey. Ron graduated from Henderson County High School and earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in geology from the University of Kentucky in Lexington.

On June 3, 1966, he married Linda Davis in Evansville, Indiana. They moved to Colorado in 1974 and to Longmont in 1982.

Ron had a long career as a geologist in the oil and gas industry, operating Mackey Oil Company for many years, and over the last 30 years Venture Resources. He was a “good” oil finder.

He was a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, Kansas Independent Oil and Gas Association and Rocky Mountain Christian Church in Longmont.

Ron decided to be a pilot as a young man watching planes fly over the family farm in Kentucky. He was an instrument-rated pilot flying a twin Cessna aircraft. He also enjoyed scuba diving, golfing and hunting.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Allen Ray Mackey and sister Martha Jean Hope.

Ron is survived by his wife Linda; three children Greg Mackey and wife Dr. Deborah Mackey, Brian Mackey and wife Allison and April Mackey Iliff and husband Jeff; and seven grandchildren Jessica, Reanna, Garrett, Cooper, Davis, Joshua and Emma.

Visitation will be from 9:30 am to 10:30 am, followed by a funeral service at 10:30 Friday, Nov. 1, 2019 at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel. Interment at Ryssby Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Alzheimer’s Association. Share condolences at www.ahlbergfuneralchapel.com.

Mary Ann Hammon

Mary Ann Hammon, 86, passed away October 29, 2019, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. She was born December 31, 1932, at Fairfax, South Dakota to Ivan & Mamie (Monroe) Stevenson. She married Duane Hammon on March 21, 1953 in South Dakota. He survives.

Coming from Salina in 1984, Mary was a Great Bend resident. She liked quilting, knitting, ceramics, cooking, bird houses and working on word puzzles. She especially liked spending time with her family.

Survivors include, her husband, Duane of the home; one daughter, Debra Thompson and husband David of Great Bend; one brother, Donald Stevenson and wife Joyce of Wahpeton, ND; one sister, Jean Pirner of Wagner, SD; four grandchildren, Mindi Beahm and husband David, Travis Thompson and wife Andrea, Dustin Thompson and wife Angela, and Lance Hammon; seven great grandchildren, Bennett, Thompson and Emerson Beahm; Emma and Tristan Thompson; Kyrah Schnoebelen and Kaylee Thompson; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Larry Hammon; two brothers, Vernon Stevenson and an infant brother; and one sister, Betty Carlson.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Friday, November 1, 2019 at Bryant Funeral Home, with family receiving friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, November 2, 2019, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Great Bend with Pastor Seong Lee. Internment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery North.

Hazel (Tootie) D. Callahan

Hazel (Tootie) D. Callahan, 91, passed away on Monday, October 28, 2019 at Diversicare, Larned.

She was born November 15, 1927, at Guide Rock, Nebraska, the daughter of Nelson N. and Mary Ruth Hazel Combs Skelton. She worked at C.O. Mammels Grocery Store in Larned.

She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Altar Society, American Legion Auxiliary, V.F.W. Auxiliary and the D.A.R. all of Larned.

On January 8, 1944 she married Francis (Frank) P. Callahan Sr. in Larned. He died August 3, 1998.

Survivors include; a daughter, Mary Ruth Hazel Rapp, Larned; a daughter in-law TaWanna Callahan, Larned; two brothers, Harlan (Ske) (Mary Alice) Skelton, Jack (Connie) Skelton both of Larned; three grandchildren, Kerry (Curtis) Schmidt, Cheryl Rapp, both of Larned, Shanna Danae Louise (Kyle) Cochran, Gardner; five great grandchildren, Jacob (Sherri) Rapp, Manhattan, Kayla (Timmy) Smith, Larned, Cohen Cochran, Houston Cochran, Ellasynn Cochran, Gardner; five great-great grandchildren, Jayci Rapp, Hazeley Rapp, Emry Rapp, Reice Smith, and Ava Smith arriving in January. Other survivors; Helen and Bill Walker, Larned, Joe Callahan, Wichita, Donnie (Mary) Deckert.

She was preceded in death by Her parents; husband; two sons, Walter Callahan, Francis (Frankie) Callahan Jr.; a grandson, Colby Francis William Callahan; two sisters, Ruth Deckert, Mary Skelton; two brothers, Neal Skelton, George Skelton and a son-in-law, R.D. Rapp.

Vigil service 7:30 p.m. Friday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Funeral Mass Saturday, November 2, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned, with Father Bernard Felix presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Burial will follow at the Larned Cemetery.

Perry L. Schweitzer

Perry L. Schweitzer, age 76, of Warsaw, Missouri, passed away at his home with family surrounding him on Thursday, October 24, 2019.

He was born on July 21, 1943 in Ransom, Kansas, the son of Harvey and Lydia (Ries) Schweitzer. He grew up on a farm in Ransom, Kansas, moving to Ness City, Kansas, his senior year of high school where he graduated from Ness City High School. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1961 until his honorable discharge in 1963. Perry returned to Ness City and on July 7, 1965 he was united in marriage to Elanor Sue Stecklein.

Perry is preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife Susie Schweitzer, of the home, two children; Travis Schweitzer, of Bazine, Kansas and Tracy Schweitzer, of Tightwad, Missouri, five grandchildren, Devin Schweitzer, Mason Schweitzer, Aaliah McHenry, Taylor Goetz and Autumn Rhea. Perry is also survived by one brother Rick Schweitzer and his wife Nonnie, of Olathe, Kansas, numerous nieces and nephews other relatives and many friends.

Arrangements for his cremation are under the direction of the Reser Funeral Home, Warsaw, Missouri. Memorial contributions may be made to the Boonslick Regional Library, the St. Jude Children’s Hospital in care of the Reser Funeral Home P.O. Box 910 Warsaw, Missouri 65355.

Gilbert Dreher

Gilbert Dreher, age 51, of Hays, Kansas died Monday, October 28, 2019, at the Wilson Care and Rehabilitation Center in Wilson, Kansas.

He was born April 24, 1968, in Denver, Colorado to Gilbert Joseph and Ruth Elaine (Binder) Dreher-Cooper.

He grew up in Liebenthal, Riverton, Wyoming and Hays. He was a 1986 graduate of Hays High School and, worked at the Golden Ox Truck Stop & Truck Wash, Holiday Inn, the 24–7 Convenience Store and Long John Silvers, all in Hays. Gilbert enjoyed watching movies, X-Box games and Magic The Gathering.

Survivors include three sisters, Suzie Bieker and husband, Glenn, Russell, KS; Audrey
Cooper, Hays, KS; Samantha Dorzweiler and husband, Nick, Hays, KS; nine nephews and nieces; and four great nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-father, Arthur S. “Sam” Cooper; one sister, Margaret Learned.
A memorial service will be at 11:00 A.M. Monday, November 4, 2019, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas 67601. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. Monday at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays.

Jo Ann Boston

Jo Ann Boston, loving daughter of Gordon Mays and Josephine Baber (Shaff) Little, was born July 24, 1932, in Logansport, Indiana, and passed away at the Norton County Hospital in Norton, Kansas, on October 27, 2019, at the age of 87.

Jo Ann grew up on the family farm near Onward, Indiana. She attended the Onward schools, graduating with the Onward High School class of 1950. She attended one year and received her business certificate from the International Business College in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. She also attended four years at Lincoln Bible Institute in Lincoln, Illinois, where she graduated with her Bachelor of Arts in Music degree.

She moved to Manhattan, Kansas, in January of 1956, as finance officer at Manhattan Bible College. There she met Darel Dean Boston. They married at the Christian Church in Onward, Indiana, on August 21, 1958, and celebrated 61 years of marriage this year. Following their wedding, they moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, where Darel attended Butler University Seminary. They served in the ministry of the Drexel Garden Christian Church. Their two children, Dean Eric and Diana Jo, were added to their family in 1960 and 1963. They moved to Kansas in August 1967, where they ministered with Norton Christian Church for 19 years. In November 1986, they moved to Junction City, Kansas, to serve the First Christian Church. There they retired in 2002, and remained in the community until 2009, when they returned to Norton, to be near their family.

Jo Ann was a member of the Norton Christian Church where she served as choir director, organist/pianist, Bible Bowl leader and in women’s ministry. She loved to travel and they took many trips together to Brazil, Thailand, Alaska, Hawaii, England, Scotland and Ireland as well as most of the U.S. They spent many vacations enjoying the mountains of Colorado and the beaches of Florida. She excelled at music and enjoyed teaching piano lessons including her great-grandson, Caden. She enjoyed reading, playing cards and dominos with dear friends, but her greatest joy in life was living her faith and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include: her husband, Darel, of Norton; one son, Dean (Julie) Boston, North Richland Hills, Texas; one daughter, Diana (Larry) Enfield, Norton; four grandsons, Jody (Jessica) Enfield and Andy (Charli) Enfield, Norton; Derek Boston, Salem, Oregon; and Tyler (Tylen) Boston, North Richland Hills; six great-grandchildren, Trevan, Caden, Ethan, Logan, Delany and Kinlee Enfield, and one great-grandson due to arrive March 2020, Jonas Boston; one aunt, Virginia Henson, Dallas, Texas; one brother-in-law, Norman (Marcella) Stewart, Washington, Kansas; three nieces, Ruth Ann (Keith) Finlayson, Gypsum, Kansas; Gay Lynn (Michael) Manning, Washington; Kathy (Steve) Spence, Porter, Texas; one nephew, Paul (Susan) Stewart, Washington; great-great and great-great-great nieces and nephews; cousins; other relatives and a host of friends.

Jo Ann was preceded in death by her parents, her step-mother, Marguerite Little, her parents-in-law, Clyde and Mildred Boston, one sister-in-law, Wanda Stewart, aunt and uncle, Marian and John Allison, uncles, Nelson and Norman Little and Kenneth Henson.

Kristy Kate Damm Edwards

Kristy Kate Damm Edwards, 40, passed away October 28, 2019, at Stafford County Hospital, Stafford.

She was born January 12, 1979, in Larned to Michael Gene and Kathie Robbins Damm.

On April 1, 2016, she married Scott Edwards in La Crosse, he survives.

A lifetime area resident, she worked as a medical scribe at Larned State Hospital. She loved her dogs and her pot belly pig, Barty, and she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include; husband, Scott Edwards, St John; parents, Mike and Kathie Damm, Larned; two sons, Austin (Jillie) Edwards, Hays, Hunter Edwards, Great Bend; brother, Mark (Jessica) Damm, North Carolina; two grandchildren, Owen and Olivia Edwards, Hays; two nephews, Mikey and Jason Damm, North Carolina; aunts and uncles, Jim and Judy Damm, Larned, Kasey and Tom Lane, Larned, David and Kelly Fyler, Scott City.
