TMP Boys Defeat Colby

TMP picks up back-to-back wins against Colby.

The Monarch boys’ basketball team completed the sweep on Colby again this year as they handed the Eagles a 60-44 loss Thursday night in Colby at the Colby Community Building.

After defeating them by 25 points in the 7th-place contest in the Hays City Shootout last Saturday, Thomas More Prep – Marian got off to a quick start against the 0-5 Eagles. The Monarchs also overcame two technical fouls to garner their second win of the season.

TMP (2-2) started the contest on a 7-0 run before eventually taking a 28-17 lead into halftime. Colby would make things interesting in the third quarter by trimming the Monarchs’ lead down to four but TMP would put them away down the stretch with solid play from seniors Nick Hammeke and Drew O’Brien.

Hammeke connected on four 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 16 points. O’Brien scored seven of his eight points in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. Both performances were season highs for both Hammeke and O’Brien.

Sophomore Luke Cox and junior Todd Kane each had 11 points to lead Colby.

TMP returns to action next Tuesday night when they travel north to take on Phillipsburg.

TMP Girls Lose to Colby

Rough second half dooms TMP girls in Colby.

The Thomas More Prep-Marian Girls drop back-to-back ballgames after starting 2-0 as they stumble Thursday night in Colby 44-34 at the Colby Community Building.

The Lady Monarchs jumped out to a 4-0 lead to begin the game but just had too many stretches where they couldn’t buy a bucket.

TMP found themselves down by seven in the second quarter but then went on a 9-0 run to get a 19-17 lead right before halftime. Colby’s Lauren Bell connected on a 3-pointer right before the buzzer to give the Lady Eagles (2-3) a one-point lead at the break. Bell finished with 11 points in the contest.

TMP (2-2) battled in the second half but were only able to score five points in the fourth quarter going on to lose by 10.

Lady Monarch senior Jenna Lang finished the evening with 12 points while fellow senior Rachel Jacobs put in eight points. Jacobs, the Most Inspirational Player from the Hays City Shootout last weekend, did not play at all in the fourth quarter.

Colby received a nice boost from sophomore Haileigh Shull who came off the bench to score 13 points.

TMP will look to bounce back next Tuesday as they travel to Phillipsburg.
