FHSU’s Anthony Sheppard MIAA Special Teams Player of the Week

Fort Hays State senior quarterback/defensive back Anthony Sheppard has been named the MIAA Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday for his efforts in the 28-26 win this past Saturday against Lincoln University. Sheppard had half of Fort Hays State’s four touchdowns in the game.

Sheppard had two punt block returns for touchdowns in the first quarter of a 28-26 win over Lincoln. Down 6-0, he recovered a blocked punt by Shaquille Copper in the end zone, which gave FHSU a 7-6 lead. He then scooped up a punt blocked by Seth Klausmeyer on the next Lincoln possession and dashed 25 yards for the score to give FHSU a 14-6 lead. The touchdowns were the first special team scores for FHSU since the 2009 season.

The 6-2 senior quarterback is a native of Pahokee, Fla. where he played football at Pahokee High School before attending Hinds Community College. Over the past two games, Sheppard has been utilized in several positions this year, which includes quarterback, running back, defensive back, and special teams.

Hays High Defeated on Senior Night

The Hays High Indians lost of the first time since week one of the season 35-6 to the Salina South Cougars.  Both teams came in state ranked, Hays #3 and South #2.  Both teams hadn’t lost since the first week, Hays to Junction City and South to Derby.  Both teams were 1-0 in districts with a chance to win the district championship in just the second week.

The game started like everyone expected with each offense scoring early touchdowns.  Hays started the game with the ball and converted on three third downs scoring on an Alex Delton run going up 6-0 after missing the extra point.

South answered back with a 46 yard drive, converting on two fourth downs, the second going for a 16 yard TD pass.  The Cougar’s extra point put them up 7-6.

However, Hays could never answer the bell again and in fact would score again losing 35-6.

The back breaker came just before half time when the Indians turned the ball over on down on a dropped pass.  South drove the field and scored with no time left on the clock going up 21-6 at half time.

Hays mustered just 147 yards of offense.  South feasted on great field position all night and despite the 35 points had just 283 yards of offense.

The Indians drop to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in district play.  South is 7-1 and 2-0 in district play.

South wins the district via a Salina Central 20-13 win over Great Bend.

Hays can still make the playoffs with a win over Salina Central next week….if Central wins they go to the playoffs.

Neither team could find the golden goal in the extra 20 minutes of play. The tie puts FHSU at 9-4-2 overall and 5-2-1 in the MIAA.

Salina Gets Indoor Football Team

by Devin Hanney ~ Salina Post

The City of Salina will accept a bid from a local ownership group that includes Junction City businessmen Chris Vercher and Jake Leighty as well as former Salina Central Mustang and Kansas Jayhawk, Jake Sharp.

The group will enter into a five year lease with the City of Salina, and will field a team to compete in the newly formed Champions Professional Indoor Football League. The CPIFL will feature approximately 10 teams, all with mid-west roots. While the CPIFL is a newborn, most of the member teams are not. Some of the franchises, including teams from Wichita, Topeka, Sioux City and Sedalia, have been in existence for over 12 years.

Owner Chris Vercher tells Salina Post, the league and especially this team will always have the fans in mind. “The blueprint for the CPIFL is fan-friendly football. The fans are a major part of the game and we want to give them a quality team to root for without breaking the bank.” According to Vercher, projected ticket costs will be as low as nine dollars for adults with half-price tickets for children 12 and under.

There will also be special pricing for the “action seats” next to the wall that surrounds the field and V.I.P. seating will be available.

The newly formed team does need help with one thing, finding a mascot. According to Vercher, the Bi-center website will be hosting a contest to name the football team in the coming days. For more information on the CPIFL, you can visit their website at: CPIFL.org.
