TMP-Marian Girls Beat Hoisington, Boys Lose

GIRLS:  TMP-Marian 34, Hoisington 26

The Lady Monarchs basketball team earned their 9th straight league title Tuesday night with a 34-26 victory over Hoisington at Al Billinger Fieldhouse.

Hoisington (13-5) led 4-0 early on, but Thomas More Prep – Marian went on an 18-5 run to finish off the first quarter. TMP allowed the Lady Cardinals to get within four midway through the fourth quarter at 28-24 but finished the game on a 6-2 run.

TMP, who has won seven straight games now, caught a big break when Hoisington’s Mallory Flagor fouled out of the ballgame early on in the fourth quarter. Flagor, the 5’11” senior, scored 10 of her 11 points in the second half.

Senior Rachel Jacobs ended the night with a game-high 16 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Allison Pfeifer added an individual season-high 6 points.

TMP improves their overall record to 14-3 and goes to 6-0 in conference play for their second straight Mid-Central Activities Association title.

An electric start was not enough for the Thomas More Prep – Marian boys’ basketball team Tuesday night as they dropped a 53-48 ballgame to Hoisington at Al Billinger Fieldhouse.

The Monarchs spurted out to 12-2 lead to begin the game and took a 28-22 lead into halftime.

The Cardinals (14-4) went on a 12-2 run of their own though to start the second half and led by as many as nine in the fourth quarter.

TMP (10-7) got the score within three at 51-48 after senior Taylor Pfeifer converted a three-point play. Pfeifer finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds.

After forcing a Hoisington turnover, TMP had a chance to tie it with a Jacob Fouts’ 3-pointer with less than 20 seconds to go but Fouts’ shot was off the mark and the Cardinals hit two free throws to seal the victory. Fouts scored a team-high 15 points.

Hoisington’s Derrick Kaiser went 9-for-10 from the free throw line and ended with 26 points. The Cardinal 6’8” junior, Cody Stetler, added 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Next up for TMP will be another home game against the Cimarron Blue Jays this Friday night.

Holub Leads FHSU Softball To Pair Of Wins To Open Season

(FHSU Athletics Photo)

Maddie Holub opened her junior season for the Fort Hays State softball team in style, leading the Tigers to a pair of wins over Nebraska-Kearney Tuesday afternoon at Tiger Stadium. Fort Hays State won the first game 4-0 then had to score late to pull out a 6-5 win in the second game.

Game 1: Fort Hays State 4, Nebraska-Kearney 0
Holub recorded a strike out on all three outs in the first inning and never looked back as the Tigers took game one 4-0. Fort Hays State produced all of their offense in the bottom of the third inning, getting one run on a Holub single that was misplayed by a Nebraska-Kearney outfielder and brought Taylor Nelson home to score. The rest of the damage was done two batters later by Amanda Vaupel, who brought home Kellsi Olsen and Holub with a three-run home run over the left field fence.

That was all the help that Holub needed. She allowed just one hit and struck out a single-game Fort Hays State record 16 batters from Nebraska-Kearney. The previous record of 15 was shared by Holub (vs. Southwest Baptist, 3-28-10) and Melissa Beyer (vs. CSU-Pueblo, 3-30-05). The only hit she allowed was a single by Sarah Rome in the top of the fifth inning. Holub picked up the win to move to 1-0 on the year while Kirstie Hiatt took the loss after allowing four runs in 3.1 innings pitched.

Game 2: Fort Hays State 6, Nebraska-Kearney 5
The second game featured more offense, but most of it came early. Nebraska-Kearney struck in the first, manufacturing one run on a single from Jen Kramer off of Tiger pitcher Abby Morrison. Fort Hays State answered in the bottom of the first inning on a homer by Holub to make the score 1-1 after one inning.

After shutting down the Lopers in the second inning, Fort Hays State had another offensive explosion to go back in front. Following an Adriana Wortley single, Callie Wright hit her first career home run to put FHSU up 3-1. Consecutive singles from Christine Moses, Madison Putnam and Taylor Nelson loaded the bases before Olsen was hit by a pitch. Yasnaya Susoeff, who pinch ran for Moses, came across to score and make it 4-1. Holub came up next and hit a deep fly ball to left field which was caught, but allowed Putman to score on the sacrifice fly.

The lead would not last long, with Nebraska-Kearney fighting back for four runs in the top of the third inning. The most of the damage came on a three-run double from Rome with the bases loaded. The game was tied at 5-5 after three innings and would stay that way for the next two innings after the pitchers began to settle in. Fort Hays State brought in Kaitlyn Shattleroe to pitch in the sixth inning and she made quick work of the Lopers, giving the Tigers another chance to take the lead.

Putman walked to lead off the sixth inning and advanced to third on a groundout from Olsen. Holub came up next and hit a shot past the Loper third baseman and pushing Putman across for the go-ahead run. Shattleroe sat the Lopers down in order in the top of the seventh and allowed Fort Hays State to get the win 6-5.

Morrison pitched 5.0 innings, allowing four hits and five runs before Shattleroe came in and didn’t allow a hit in the final two innings. Shattleroe took the win to improve to 1-0 on the year, while Becky Dunn of Nebraska-Kearney got the loss.

Fort Hays State starts the season 2-0 and they will be on the road at the Midwestern State Tournament in Wichita Falls, Texas this weekend, playing five games between Friday and Sunday.

Sam Thoman Named RMAC Wrestler of the Week

(FHSU Athletics Photo)

Fort Hays State wrestler Sam Thoman was named RMAC Wrestler of the Week, announced Wednesday by the RMAC. Thoman is the second Tiger to earn the honor this season, joining Walker Clarke, who earned RMAC Wrestler of the Week on Dec. 6.

Thoman went a perfect 5-0 on the week to improve to 24-8 on the season. His pin of Colorado Mesa’s Chester Granard broke a 9-9 tie for a six-point lead, which eventually helped FHSU claim the dual by five points. He posted his only decision win of the week against Western State, edging Cody Franum, 5-3. Thoman was dominant at the MIAA Duals on Sunday, posting major decisions over Josh Well of Truman and Todd Brier of Central Missouri. He pinned Mason Ridenhour of Lindenwood in the final dual to help the Tigers to a sweep of the competition.

During his 24-8 season, the junior from Andale, Kan. won an individual championship at the Baker Open on Nov. 6, while also placing third at the Kansas Cup in January.

Thoman is one of two Tigers to earn the honor this season, joining Clarke, who earned RMAC Wrestler of the Week on Dec. 6.

No. 15 FHSU welcomes No. 4 Nebraska-Kearney and No. 7 Grand Canyon to Gross Memorial Coliseum on Wednesday (Feb. 15) for a double dual, starting at 5 p.m.

No. 4 Kansas Holds Off Kansas State

(Chris Bronson/University Daily Kansan)

Manhattan, KS – Tyshawn Taylor totaled 20 points, five rebounds and five assists as No. 4 Kansas got past Kansas State, 59-53, at Bramlage Coliseum.

Jeff Withey added 18 points with 11 rebounds and blocked nine shots for the Jayhawks (21-5, 11-2 Big 12), who held on late to win their third consecutive game.

Jamar Samuels posted 20 points and 12 boards for the Wildcats (17-8, 6-7), who received 12 points and eight rebounds from Rodney McGruder in defeat.

“The effort was good tonight. We just did not come up with a win. It is always tough for our guys because we try hard,” Samuels said.

McGruder’s bucket with 1:15 to play pulled KSU within 55-51, but after Taylor missed the front end of a 1-and-1 on the next possession, Will Spradling missed a three-pointer and Jordan Henriquez failed to convert the offensive board.

Taylor grabbed that rebound but lost the ball, and Angel Rodriguez had his layup try blocked by Withey. Taylor kept with it, and was fouled after coming down with the ball.

He again missed his free-throw try, but Spradling couldn’t get his shot to fall. Thomas Robinson got the rebound and made both his attempts for a six- point spread with 18 seconds left.

Rodriguez missed from beyond the arc but McGruder followed up to cut the deficit to 57-53. Connor Teahen made two from the line to seal it after Rodriguez was forced to foul.

Kansas led by as many as 12 in the first half and went to the break up 28-18. K-State opened up the second half on a 16-6 run to tie the game on a Henriquez layup just before the six-minute mark, then moved ahead 37-36 on a Thomas Gibson free throw.

“Our first half defense was terrific,” Kansas head coach Bill Self said. “[Then] they totally out whipped us to start the second half for about 10 minutes.”

But the Jayhawks seized control, scoring the next 11 points, and took a 47-37 edge on a Taylor jumper to cap the surge with 6 1/2 minutes remaining.

Kansas’ Jeff Withey Named Big 12 Player of the Week

( Orlin Wagner / Associated Press )

IRVING, Texas – Kansas center Jeff Withey has been selected Phillips 66 Big 12 Player of the Week, for games of Feb. 7-12 in voting by a panel of media covering the league. It is the first conference weekly accolade for Withey and sixth time in 2011-12 that a Jayhawk has earned Big 12 Player of the Week honors.

Withey had a career week as Kansas won at No. 6 Baylor (68-54) and against Oklahoma State (81-66). The 7-0 San Diego, Calif., junior began with a career-best 25 points to go along with five rebounds and three blocks at Baylor. He made 8-of-10 (.800) shots from the floor in that game. He then grabbed a career-high 20 rebounds versus Oklahoma State to go along with 18 points and seven blocks. Withey is the second Big 12 player to grab at least 20 boards in a game this season joining Kansas junior teammate Thomas Robinson who had 21 rebounds against North Dakota (12/31). Withey shot 60.9 percent from the floor on the week, while connecting at a .789 clip from the free-throw line. He is averaging 9.2 points and 6.3 rebounds and leads the Big 12 in blocks (79) and blocks per game (3.2). His 44 rejections in league play is double the total of the next closest player.

Withey joins Robinson, senior Tyshawn Taylor and junior Travis Releford in earning Big 12 Player of the Week honors this season. Robinson has won the award three times, while Taylor, Releford and Withey once this season. This is the first time in conference history that four different players from the same school have been named Big 12 Player of the Week during the same season.

Big First Half Lifts No. 7 Kansas Past Oklahoma State

( Orlin Wagner / Associated Press )

Lawrence, KS – Thomas Robinson had 24 points and 14 rebounds, helping the seventh-ranked Kansas Jayhawks dominate the Oklahoma State Cowboys, 81-66.

Jeff Withey also had a double-double with 18 points and 20 boards for the Jayhawks (20-5, 10-2 Big 12), who recorded their 23rd straight 20-win campaign.

“It makes it a lot easier for me. I feel like I’m not even working to score anymore now with the way Jeff is playing,” Robinson said. “My play deserves nothing. This is on Jeff. He’s playing his butt off right now. He’s definitely the reason we’re playing good right now.”

Tyshawn Taylor and Elijah Johnson added 12 and 11 points, respectively, for Kansas, which has posted 10 or more wins in conference play for 18th straight seasons. Travis Releford donated 10 points.

Markel Brown ended with 21 points for the Cowboys (12-13, 5-7), who shot just 32.7 percent from the field and went 5-for-21 from beyond the arc. Keiton Page tallied 19 points.

Holding a 16-13 lead with 12:23 left in the first half, Kansas never looked back after putting together a 22-4 run over the next seven minutes. Withey tallied seven points during the burst, which Releford capped with a slam for a 38-17 margin.

An 11-0 Kansas surge later in the half made it a 51-22 game. Page’s jumper made it 51-24 at the break.

The Jayhawks cruised to victory in the second half.

“Give Kansas all the credit. They just came out and jumped on us,” Oklahoma State head coach Travis Ford said. “We never could get going. In the first half, we just couldn’t get anything happening from both ends of the court. We were just kind of stuck in mud, and they had a lot to do with that.”
