Henriquez Reinstated At K-State

LUBBOCK, Texas – Kansas State coach Frank Martin says forward Jordan Henriquez has been reinstated and is available for Wednesday night’s game at Texas Tech.

Martin announced last Thursday that Henriquez had been suspended indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the team. Henriquez returned to practice on Tuesday and traveled with the 22nd-ranked Wildcats (14-4, 3-3 Big 12) to Lubbock.

Martin says Henriquez ” just lost his focus and needed time to understand his priorities.”

The 6-foot-11 junior has played in 17 games this season, starting six, and is averaging 7.1 points and 5.1 rebounds in 18.9 minutes.

Martin says he has not decided if Henriquez will play against the Red Raiders (7-11, 0-6).

Tigers Jump Up Two Spots In NABC Division II Poll

The Fort Hays State Tigers move up two spots to No. 23 in this week’s NABC Division II men’s basketball rankings. (See complete poll below).

It’s a school record 36th-consecutive week of being ranked in the NABC regular season poll. The Tigers eclipsed the old mark of 29, which started with the first regular season poll of the 1995-96 undefeated national championship season for the Tigers and ended on the ninth poll of the 1997-98 season.

The Tigers have now been ranked in 49 regular season polls under 11th-year head coach Mark Johnson. All of those polls have been since the 2005-06 season, a year that saw the Tigers reach the No. 1 ranking in the nation.

Missouri Southern moves up two to No. 14.

The top two teams from last year’s final NABC/Division II men’s basketball rankings are now the top two teams in the current poll, as Bellarmine and West Liberty occupy the those spots in the new rankings released Tuesday.

Bellarmine, who held the number one spot in November, returns to the top of the rankings after posting three wins last week, including a home win over No. 9 Northern Kentucky, coupled with two losses by last week’s top-ranked team, Kentucky Wesleyan. Meanwhile, West Liberty – the No. 1 team in the final 2010-11 rankings ahead of Bellarmine – moved up to No. 2 after recording a pair of victories of its own a week ago.

Big Second Half By Robinson Helps No. 5 Kansas Past Texas A&M

(University Daily Kansan Photo)

Lawrence, KS  – Thomas Robinson scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and No. 5 Kansas pulled away from Texas A&M in a 64-54 victory at Allen Fieldhouse.

Tyshawn Taylor added 17 points for the Jayhawks (17-3, 7-0 Big 12), who trailed by two at halftime and took control midway in the second half.

Robinson scored the first five points during an 11-3 run that gave Kansas a 55-45 advantage with less than five minutes to go, and the Jayhawks held on for a 10th consecutive victory.

“Defensively, they’re good,” said Kansas head coach Bill Self. “We weren’t going to hang 80 on A&M tonight, I didn’t think that at all. I thought it would be a lower-scoring game. But we shot the ball miserably, and we played selfish and we played soft, and we didn’t play smart the first half.”

Elston Turner poured in 24 points for the Aggies (11-8, 2-5), who were coming off Saturday’s overtime win against Oklahoma.

“Thomas Robinson and their length, and their free throw shooting was a big key,” said Aggies head coach Billy Kennedy. “I’m really proud of the effort our guys gave. I thought we executed our game plan about as well as we could tonight.”

Texas A&M fell behind early, going scoreless for the first five-plus minutes, during which time Kansas poured in 11. Taylor began the game with a jumper and three-pointer, and the Jayhawks appeared to have control.

But the Aggies used a 10-0 burst to move in front. Daniel Alexander connected on two shots from beyond the arc to help Texas A&M grab an 18-15 edge midway through the half.

The Aggies led by as many as five during the half, which Dash Harris closed with a layup for a 30-28 lead.

The second half was back-and-forth until Kansas made its critical run. Thomas began it with a three-point play, then followed with two more foul shots. Jeff Withey closed the rally with four consecutive points, including a pair from the line to make it a 10-point margin with 4:41 on the clock.

Turner knocked down a three with under two minutes to play, bringing Texas A&M within 59-52, and the Aggies stole the ball from Taylor on Kansas’ next possession. But Taylor grabbed it back and sank a layup with just more than a minute to go, effectively securing the outcome.

Jacobs Sets Scoring Record, TMP Girls Roll Past Goodland

Senior Rachel Jacobs hit a three-pointer with 28 seconds left in the game Friday afternoon against Goodland in the consolation semifinals of the Trojan Classic and became the all-time career leading scorer at Thomas More Prep – Marian.

After suffering a loss in the opening round in the Hillsboro Tournament, The Lady Monarchs (8-3) responded with a 64-43 victory over the Cowgirls.

Jacobs finished with 15 points in the game and now has 1,327 points in her career. The FHSU commit needed just 14 to break the school scoring record set by Kaylee Hoffman. (Her cousin)

TMP only held a one-point lead after the first quarter against a now 0-10 Goodland team. The Lady Monarchs opened the game up by starting the second quarter on a 20-0 run ending the first half with a 38-17 lead.

TMP, the three-time defending champion of the Trojan Classic, received double-digit scoring from four players. Junior Heather Ruder finished with a game-high 19 points and seven assists. Senior Jenna Lang ended with 16 points and 10 rebounds and senior Rebecca Pray put in a season-high 10 points. Along with her 15 points, Jacobs added eight rebounds and four blocks.

The Lady Monarchs move on to play Republic County in the 5th-place game of tournament on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 11:30 AM and our coverage will begin at 11:10 with the Fort Hays Auto Sales Pregame Show on 14 KAYS (1400-AM).
