104 players greeted head coach Chris Brown as the Fort Hays State football team held their first practice Thursday morning at Lewis Field. It was Brown’s first practice as a college head coach after spending the last nine seasons as Washburn’s defensive coordinator.
The Tigers will don full pads for the first time Monday then have their first two-a-day workout Tuesday. They open the season at home September 1st against Emporia State.

Former Fort Hays State wide receiver Cordarol Scales signed as an undrafted free agent with the New York Jets on Wednesday (August 10). Scales is the second FHSU player to sign with an NFL team this summer after fellow teammate and wide receiver O.J. Murdock signed with the Tennessee Titans in late July.
Scouts around the NFL took notice to Scales abilities during the 2010 season and his large frame, standing at 6-feet, 4-inches and 220 pounds. Not only was he a solid possession receiver, but he often provided big key blocks downfield to help the Tigers’ explosive offensive attack.
Scales finished as a two-time All-MIAA Honorable Mention selection at wide receiver. He caught 33 passes in 2010 for 527 yards (second-most on the team behind Murdock) and six touchdowns. Scales went on to participate in the 2011 Cactus Bowl in January (NCAA Division II All-Star Game).

Around 110 players are expected in camp today as the Fort Hays State football team holds their first workout in preparation of their season opener September 1st against Emporia State. The Tigers will be led by first year head coach Chris Brown who will be looking to improve off the Tigers 3-win season a year ago.
The Tigers will be looking to replace eight offensive and eight defensive starters including all-conference quarterback Mike Garrison and All-American wide receiver O.J. Murdock.
The Tigers practice at 9am Thursday morning. Two-a-day practices begin August 16th.
It might very well be the most disappointing loss of the season for the Kansas City Royals. Sam Fuld hit a game-tying triple then scored on an errant throw to complete Tampa Bay’s five-run ninth as the Rays rally for an 8-7 win Wednesday night.
Fuld hit a drive to right center off closer Joakim Soria (5-5) and wound up scoring the winning run when second baseman Johnny Giavotella’s relay throw got past third baseman Mike Moustakas.
Aaron Crow gave up consecutive singles in the ninth, Soria then entered and gave up an RBI double to Evan Longoria, a run-scoring grounder by Ben Zobrist and a Casey Kotchman RBI infield single before Fuld’s two-out hit. It’s his seventh blown save in 28 tries this season.
The big inning came after Melky Cabrera’s three-run homer in the top of the inning put the Royals up 7-3. Cabrera drove in five for Kansas City.
The Royals wrap up the series this morning with Royals pre-game at 10:35am on KAYS (1400-AM)
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli believes significant progress has been made during the first two weeks of a most unusual training camp.
Speaking after Kansas City’s walkthrough Wednesday morning, Pioli says he’s been encouraged” by several new players and the ground that’s been covered by Todd Haley and the rest of the coaching staff after the lockout.
The defending AFC West champs wrapped up their first leg of training camp with a practice under the lights Wednesday night in St. Joseph, Mo. They head home to Arrowhead Stadium for their preseason opener Friday night against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Wednesday that the club has signed free agent WR Keary Colbert and they’ve been awarded K Todd Carter via a waiver claim from St. Louis.
Colbert (6-1, 205) has played in 68 games (49 starts) with Carolina (2004-07), Denver (2008), Seattle (2008) and Detroit (2008). He has caught 121 passes for 1,540 yards (12.7 avg.) with eight touchdowns. He entered the NFL as a second-round draft choice (62nd overall) of Carolina in 2004.
Colbert caught a school-record 207 passes for 2,964 yards at Southern California. He totaled 65 receptions for 1,520 yards with 24 TDs his final two seasons at Hueneme High School in Oxnard, Calif.
Carter (6-1, 190) has played in one game with Carolina (2010). He entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with Carolina in 2010. Carter converted 27 of 41 field goal attempts and 173 of 189 PATs for 254 points during his collegiate career at Grand Valley State.

Hundreds of the top water skiers from across the country are in Wilmington, Illinois this week for the 2011 GOODE Water Ski National Championships. It’s the world’s largest three-event water ski tournament and on Tuesday, Jason Staab of Hays won the men’s 35-44 year old division 3 Slalom national title.
Staab, who qualified by winning the Midwest Regional at Trophy Lakes Estates in Center City, Minnesota, was ranked 23rd coming into the championships.

Evan Longoria hit a two-run homer and drove in all four runs to back James Shields’ fourth shutout of the season, as the Tampa Bay Rays blanked the Kansas City Royals 4-0 in the second game of a four-game series.
Shields gave up six hits, striking out eight and walking three in his eighth complete game of the season.
Jeff Francis allowed four runs on five hits over seven innings for the Royals, who have lost the first two games of the series and four of five overall. Francis struck out four and walked none and retired 15 straight at one point after giving up two in the first.

There were now real big surprises as the Kansas City Chiefs released their depth chart in advance of their pre-season opener Friday at home against Tampa Bay. Thomas Jones is listed as the starting running back over Jamaal Charles, Tyler Palko is the No. 2 quarterback over rookie Ricky Stanzi and Dexter McCluster is listed as a wide receiver. ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) – Tamba Hali thanked Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt and his family, then talked about getting back to work.
Kansas City’s star linebacker spoke with reporters yesterday for the first time since signing a five-year, $60-million contract last week.
The Chiefs placed the franchise tag on Hali during the offseason, but there was no lengthy holdout from a player coming off of a career year in which he had 14 1/2 sacks.
Hali’s deal made him the second-highest paid outside linebacker in the league behind Dallas’ DeMarcus Ware. The contract included $35 million guaranteed.
Football equipment check out will soon start across the state of Kansas and time for coaches and media alike to start taking stock in their teams. Let us take a look around the Western Athletic Conference.
League Quickies: Only Hays High returns a starting quarterback but he was hurt for the final three games of the season. However, nearly every team returns a running back that either started or saw a considerable amount of playing time. The last two WAC crowns went to first year head coaches…Liberal has a first year head coach. Dodge City, Garden City and Great Bend made the playoffs last year.
Dodge City – The defending league champs have holes to fill on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Jared Helfrich graduated and signed with Fort Hays State University for both football and baseball. While there is little experience at whoever takes over the signal calling duties, Helfrich and the quarterback before him were each first year starters and turned into All-Conference caliber players. All-League football and basketball star Rico Hogan has reportedly transferred to Norman, OK. Dodge City went deep into the 6A playoffs and the experience has left them hungry under their second year head coach Dave Foster. Defensively the Red Demons should be strong once again, with most of the returning starters coming from this side of the ball.
Non-Conference Schedule: @ Wichita SE, Wichita NW, @ Wichita North
District: @ Goddard, Maize, @ Garden City
Garden City – Brian Hill settles in on his second year and has the unenviable task of replacing a three year starting quarterback. While several kids will likely have a shot at the starting role, the thing to remember is that Garden City was a very balanced attack last year, meaning that the new quarterback won’t be required to sling the ball all over the yard, allowing some time to get acquainted to the new position. Garden City starts with four of their five games on the road. None of those directly relate to making the playoffs, but with a good start on the road you would think a long stretch of home games towards the end of the season should set this team up well.
Non-Conference Schedule: @ Scott City, Woodward, OK, Wichita East
District: @ Maize, Goddard, Dodge City
Great Bend – Just like in Garden City, the Panther’s head coach has a tall task of finding a replacement for an all-star quarterback. Greg Hildebrand led the team in passing and rushing and took nearly every if not every snap last year. Hildebrand had a great career and does Great Bend have another gunslinger in the waiting? Bo Black in his 11th year is far and away the longest tenured coach in the conference and has found much success on his watch. That being said it is tough to assume that Great Bend wouldn’t be anything but on the cusp of another playoff berth or league title. In a league that seems to have many returning starting offensive lineman, Great Bend does have four of five back on the line. Great Bend has an open date in the second week of the season.
Non-Conference Schedule: @ St. Thomas Aquinas, @ Wichita Heights
District: @ Hays, Salina Central, @ Salina South
Hays – The Indians were left out of the playoffs last year due to the point tie breaker and haven’t made the playoffs since the mid 90’s. They are the only team with a quarterback that returns with starting experience but Austin Unrein was hurt for the final three games. Hays High also returns four of five on the offensive line. The defense for Hays will be mostly inexperienced when it comes to starting games however many of the kids played under the Friday Night lights late in blow out games and because of injuries.
Non-Conference Schedule: @ Chapman, Goddard, @ Wichita South
District: Great Bend, @ Salina South, Salina Central
Liberal – Cliff Abbott is the first year head coach for the Redskins. If history of the league repeats itself from the past two years, Liberal will win the WAC title. In 2009, Indian’s first year head coach Ryan Cornelson won the title then in 2010 Red Demon’s first year head coach Dave Foster did the same. The first thing to do in Liberal is find a new person to take snaps after multi-year starter Slader McVey graduated and somebody to catch that ball after Jade Cathey graduated and headed off for K-State. Liberal has plenty of returners to work with eight on each side of the ball.
Non-Conference Schedule: @ Ulysses, Guymon, OK
Bishop Carroll, @ Hutchinson, @ Wichita West
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – A misdemeanor battery charge against University of Kansas basketball player Thomas Robinson has been dismissed.
The Lawrence Journal-World reported that city Prosecutor Jerry Little said he dropped the charge because Robinson’s accuser didn’t want the case to continue.
Robinson was cited after police were called April 10 to a Lawrence nightclub. Little said Monday that the investigation revealed Robinson spit on a bouncer during an argument.
Robinson, a junior, was scheduled to appear in court Monday but Little said he dismissed the case Friday.
Robinson did complete 20 hours of community service and wrote a letter of apology to the victim.
Little also said other people apparently were involved i the incident but officers were unable to locate them.
