O.J. Murdock’s Season Ends With Injury

Former Fort Hays State standout wide receiver O.J. Murdock will have to wait another year in his bid to make the NFL. Murdock was wavied by the Tennessee Titans after tearing his Achilles tendon in a non-contact drill July 31st and has cleared waivers and will be put in the inured reserve list.

Murdock was signed by the Titans as an undrafted free agent after setting the Tigers single-season receiving record with 1,290 yards this past season. The Tampa, Fla. native was named All-American by Football Gazettes and D2football.com and was a two-time All-MIAA selection.

FHSU Cross Country Teams Picked 6th In MIAA Coaches Polls

The Fort Hays State women’s and men’s cross country teams were each selected to finish sixth in the MIAA in the Preseason Coaches Polls. On the men’s side, Central Missouri was picked to finish first, while Missouri Southern and Pittsburg finished tied for first in the women’s poll.

For the men’s team, Fort Hays State received 20 points, just one point behind fifth place Southwest Baptist. Central Missouri totaled 49 points with Missouri Southern and Pittsburg State tied for second at 38 points. Northwest Missouri received 31 votes to finish fourth in the poll and Southwest Baptist finished ahead of FHSU with 21 points. After the Tigers is Truman (16 points) and Emporia State (11 points) respectively.

The women’s side saw the Lady Tigers finish sixth with 29 points. Behind FHSU in the poll were Central Missouri (26 points), Emporia State (16 points) and Lincoln (eight points) for seventh, eighth and ninth respectively. Missouri Southern and Pittsburg State finished tied for first, followed by Northwest and Truman tied in third with 45 points. Southwest Baptist placed fifth in the poll with 41 points.

Larks Eliminated From NBC World Series

The Hays Larks run at the NBC World Series came to an end Sunday night, losing 7-6 to the Clarinda (IA) A’s.

The A’s scored three in the third and three in the fourth to build a 7-4 lead. Hays rallied with a run in the fifth and another in the seventh but could get no closer.

It was a game of close calls for the Larks who nearly got out of the fourth without giving up a run but just missed turning an inning-ending double play.

Matt Schmit gave up all three runs in the fourth and takes the loss. Sloan Soulia had a double and a triple and drove in three.

The Larks go 2-2 in the tournament and finish their season 30-18.

Giavotella Helps Lead Royals Past Detroit

Johnny Giavotella hit his first major league home run and scored twice as the Kansas City Royals survive a weather delay and a Detroit rally for a 4-3 win.

Giavotella also doubled in his third game since being called up from Triple-A Omaha. Mitch Maier added an RBI triple for the Royals.

Starter Bruce Chen (6-5) was pulled after a 46-minute rain delay in the sixth inning but earned his first win in five starts. He was charged with three runs on five hits in five-plus innings, striking out five and walking none.

The Royals avoid the sweep with the win after losing the previous two games by the same 4-3 score.

Kansas City is in Tampa Bay tonight as they open a seven-game road trip. Luke Hochevar makes the start with Royals pre-game at 5:35pm on KAYS (1400-AM)

Heck’s Complete Game Leads Larks To Win

Andrew Heck pitched a complete-game four-hit shutout in the Hays Larks 7-0 win over Walker Transmission (CO) in a 3rd round elim. game at the NBC World Series early Saturday morning.

Andrew Heck pitched a complete-game four-hitter, leading the Hays Larks to a 7-0 win over Walker Transmisison (CO) in an elimination round game at the NBC World Series in Wichita. The game, which didn’t start until 1:38am, was delayed for nearly five hours by rain and didn’t resume until after six o’clock in the morning.

Heck allowed no runs, striking out two and walking only one for his second win of the season.

Jon Ryan and Cam Brown both had two hits and drove in two.

The win advances the Larks to a 4th round elimination game at 5pm Sunday against the winner of Sunday’s 12:30am game between the San Diego (CA) Force and the Clarinda (IA) A’s. You can listen to the game on KAYS (1400-AM).

Errors Doom Larks In Loss To Seattle

Grady Wood scattered nine hits over 8 1/3 innings as the Seattle Studs knocked off the Hays Larks 2-0 in the second-round of the NBC World Series in Wichita. Wood struck out six and walked just one in the victory.

Seattle scored their runs in the third thanks to two Larks throwing errors.

Larks starter Kirk Jewasko allowed the two unearned runs on six hits over 7 innings and takes the loss. Jewasko struck out four and walked four.

The loss drops the Larks to the loser’s bracket where they will play Walker Transmission (CO) in the 12:30am game early Saturday morning.

Larks Play At 10pm Thursday Night

The Hays Larks play in the 10pm game Thursday night at the NBC World Series in Wichita.

The Hays Larks still don’t know who they’ll play but they now know when they play Thursday at the NBC World Series.

The Larks will play in the ten o’clock game Thursday night against the winner of the Seattle (WA) Studs and Case Grande (AZ) Cotton Kings. That game was suspended in the sixth inning Wednesday night because of a thunderstorm with the Studs leading 4-3. It will be completed Thursday morning at eight o’clock.

Should the Larks win Thursday, they won’t play again until sometime Sunday. If they lose, they play again Friday in an elimination game.

We’ll have it for you Thursday night on KAYS following Royals baseball around 9:45pm.

Butler, Hochevar Carry Royals Past Baltimore

Luke Hochevar struck out a season-high seven in the Royals 6-2 win over Baltimore Wednesday. It's his eighth win, the most in a season for the former first-round draft pick.

Billy Butler hit a three-run home run and drove in four as the Kansas City Royals took a 6-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles in the second of game of their three-game set at Kauffman Stadium.

Alex Gordon went 3-for-6 with two doubles and two runs scored while Alcides Escobar went 3-for-4 with a two-run triple to break a 1-1 tie in the second. Manuel Pina had two hits including a double a run scored in his major league debut at catcher.

Luke Hochevar picks up his career-best eighth win, giving up just one earned run on four hits with a walk and seven strikeouts over 7 1/3 innings.

The Royals have won four of six and nine of their last 14 send Jeff Francis to the mound tonight in the series finale. We’ll have it beginning at 6:35pm on tonight on KAYS.

Source: Chiefs Lock Up LB Hali For 5 years, $60M

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) – A person familiar with the deal tells The Associated Press that top pass rusher Tamba Hali and the Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to terms on a five-year deal worth $60 million.

The person, who spoke late Wednesday on condition of anonymity because no announcement had been made, said $35 million of the contract is guaranteed. The person also said that Hali will be at trainingcampThursdayafternoon on the campus of Missouri Western StateUniversity.

Hali had been designated as the Chiefs’ franchise player after a breakthrough season in which he led the AFC with 14 1/2 sacks. His new contract places him in the same echelon as Cowboys pass rusher DeMarcus Ware, who has a six-year, $78 million deal.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) – A person with knowledge of the deal says former All-Pro fullback Le’Ron McClain has agreed to a one-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on Wednesday on condition of anonymity because the team had yet to announce the move. McClain is expected to provide a short-yardage and blocking option to go with a group of speedy running backs that includes Thomas Jones and Jamaal Charles.

McClain is a former fourth-round draft pick who spent four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. The two-time Pro Bowl selection was voted first-team All-Pro after running for 902 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2008.

The 260-pound fullback’s work load had dwindled the past two years. He ran for just 180 yards in 2009 before carrying 28 times for 85 yards last season.

Royals Unveil Logo For 2012 All-Star Game

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The official logo for the 2012 All-Star game has been unveiled. 

Next year’s game is at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, and the Royals were well-represented when the logo made its debut Tuesday. All-Star relievers Aaron Crow and Joakim Soria and manager Ned Yost all attended the unveiling.

Kansas City has not hosted the All-Star game since 1973, leading mayor Sly James to declare “I just want to say to Major League Baseball: We’ve missed you.” The Royals’ blue and metallic gold are in the logo, which has a family crest, accompanied by flags and adorned with stars.

MIAA Announces 2011 Volleyball Preseason Poll

The FHSU volleyball team is picked to finish last in the MIAA coaches preseason poll.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Two-time defending MIAA championCentral Missouri was the unanimous pick for preseason No. 1 in the 2011 volleyball coaches poll, the conference office announced Wednesday.

The Jennies received nine of 10 first-place votes (coaches were not able to vote for their own school) and 81 points to earn the top spot. Washburn, which received the remaining first-place vote, received 73 points to take the preseason No. 2 position.

Truman comes in at No. 3 after accumulating 65 points, followed byEmporiaStateat No. 4 with 50 points,PittsburgStateat No. 5 with 47 points andNorthwest Missouriat No. 6 with 39 points. UCM, WU, TSU, ESU and NWMSU earned berths in the NCAA South Central Regional last season.

MissouriSouthern was voted preseason No. 7 with 34 points, Missouri Western is No. 8 with 30 points, Southwest Baptist was selected No. 9 with 22 points, andFortHaysStatewas voted No. 10 with nine points.

The 2011 volleyball season is set to begin Friday, Sept. 2, with several non-conference tournaments. The first MIAA matchup of the season will take place Sept. 9.

Royals Drop Series Opener With Baltimore

Bruce Chen allowed three runs on seven hits over 4 2/3 innings in the Royals loss to Baltimore Tuesday night.

Mark Reynolds went 3-for-5 with a three-run homer and five RBI’s, as the Baltimore Orioles handed the Kansas City Royals 8-2 in the opener of their three-game series at Kauffman Stadium.

Alfredo Simon gave up one run on four hits over seven innings to pick up the win. Bruce Chen allowed three runs on seven hits over 4 2/3 innings to suffer the loss and drop to 5-5. He walked four and struck out two.

Eric Hosmer and Billy Butler each drove in a run for the Royals who had won three of four. The win snaps a three-game skid of the O’s.
