Chiefs Have Extra Money To Set Roster

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs will open training camp on Thursday in St. Joseph, Mo.

As the lockout ends and the tightly compressed league year begins, the front office of the Chiefs face a daunting array of hurried decisions.

These include signing a right tackle to bolster the NFL’s top rushing attack, getting AFC sack leader Tamba Hali to sign a long0term deal, and reaching agreement with wide receiver and first-round pick Jonathan Baldwin. The good news for fans is that general manager Scott Pioli will have plenty of money to spend.

The Chiefs were under the salary cap last season.

NFL And Players Agree To Deal

WASHINGTON (AP) — Two people familiar with the negotiations tell The Associated Press that the NFL and players have reached a deal to end the lockout.

The people spoke on condition of anonymity because the process is supposed to remain secret and no formal announcement has been made.

The NFL Players Association’s executive committee is meeting Monday and is expected to begin the voting process. Owners overwhelmingly approved a proposal last week, but some unresolved issues still needed to be figured out to satisfy players.

The sides worked through the weekend, finally finishing the deal Monday morning, one of the people told the AP.

The league’s old labor deal expired in March, and the owners locked out the players, the NFL’s first work stoppage since 1987.

NFL Preseason, When It Begins, Could Look Ragged

NEW YORK (AP) – While lawyers for NFL players and owners spend the weekend trying to put the lockout to rest, many fans are wondering when pro football will return.

And when it does, just how ragged will the preseason look?

Exhibition games rarely feature star players for more than cameo appearances. Now, with no offseason training at team facilities, no minicamps and perhaps delayed camp openings, the big names could be on the bench until… September.

There’s also enhanced concern about injuries. Few players are likely to be close to football shape when they report – whenever that is.

The players have yet to schedule a vote on an owner-approved proposal that would put the league back in business.
