The Monarchs blank Hoisington 9-0 in a game called in the fifth because of run rule.

The Monarchs, now 19-12, play again Friday at five o’clock.

TMP-Marian’s Dumler Receives Honor

TMP-Marian head track coach Matt Dumler has been named the 3A Girls’ Coach of the Year for the 2011 Track and Field season by the Kansas Cross Country and Track and Field Coaches Association.

Dumler helped guide the Monarch girls to a runner-up finish at this spring’s 3A State Track and Field Championships in Wichita.

Dumler will be presented his award at the group’s annual clinic January 8th in Junction City.

Hays Eagles Senior American Legion Wins Zone

The Hays Eagles win the Dodge City "AAA" zone tournament with win over Great Bend.

The Hays Eagles Senior American Legion is headed back to state. The Eagles go 2-0 to win their “AAA” Zone tournament in Dodge City with a 13-6 victory over Great Bend, their second of the tournament. Taylor Renz pitched seven innings and picks up the win.

The 28-16 Eagles will play the winner of the Salina, McPherson, Newton Zone tourney next Wednesday in Leavenworth.

Hays Monarchs Begin Zone Tourney Play

The Hays Monarchs open "AA" Zone tourney play in Pratt.The Hays Monarchs begin “AA” Zone tournament play Thursday afternoon in Pratt. The 18-12 Monarchs are the No. 2 seed and open with Hoisington in the first game at 2:30pm. Three-loss Pratt takes on Wellington in the other first round game with the two losers playing again at 7:30pm in an elimination game. The two winners meet at five o’clock Friday.

This is the first year the Monarchs, who are sponsored by the Plainville American Legion Post, have been eligible for zone tournament play.

Wild Pitch Leads To Royals Walk Off Win

Alex Gordon scores both of the Royals runs in thier 2-1 win over the White Sox Wednesday night.

Alex Gordon made a spectacular catch to save runs in the sixth inning then scored on a wild pitch in the 11th, giving the Kansas City Royals a 2-1 win over the Chicago White Sox Wednesday night at Kauffman Stadium.

Gordon, who scored the tying run in the eighth, walked with two outs in the 11th before moving to third on Mitch Maier’s single up the middle. Sergio Santos 2-1 pitch to Billy Butler was low and in the dirt and got away from catcher A.J. Pierzynski, allowing the winning run to score.

Royals starter Bruce Chen allowed just the one run on four hits with four strikeouts over eight innings. Aaron Crow worked two scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win as the Royals take two of three from the Sox.

Kansas City is off Thursday before hosting Detroit Friday.

Royals Trade Betemit To Detroit

Royals trade third baseman Wilson Betemit to Detroit for two minor leaguers.

Third basemen Wilson Betemit will have to use a different entrance when he heads to the game Friday night. The Royals trade him for two minor leaguers prior to the start of Thursday night’s game toDetroit who will be in Kauffman Stadium for a weekend series starting Friday. Betemit was hitting .281 with three home runs and 27 RBIs in 57 games with the Royals this year.Kansas City receives left-hander Antonio Cruz and catcher Julio

Rodriguez. The 19-year-old Cruz has gone 2-6 with a 3.11 ERA with Class A West Michigan in 2011. The 21-year-old Rodriguez has hit .283 at Class A Lakeland.

K-State Picked 8th, KU Last In Big 12 Poll

Oklahoma has been chosen to repeat as Big 12 champs in the Football Preseason Poll voted on by the media who cover the conference. Texas A&M is picked second just ahead of Oklahoma State. Kansas State is eighth and Kansas last.

Larks Defense Fails In Loss To Liberal

The Larks commit eleven errors resulting in ten unearend runs in an 11-7 loss in LIberal Wednesday.

One night after getting some stellar defense and good work from their bullpen, the Larks commit eleven errors and the bullpen explodes as they fall 11-7 to Liberal. Ten of the Bee Jays runs are unearned.

The Larks score four in the first but the Bee Jays respond with three in the bottom of the inning then added two in the third to tie the game 5-5. The Larks retake the lead with a two in the fourth on Andrew Heck’s two-run double. It would stay that way until the eighth when the Bee Jays strike for sixth unearned runs off relievers Malcolm Purdy and Vincent Littleman. Purdy takes the loss.

Andrew Heck finished with two hits and three RBI’s. The Larks drop to 24-14 and 16-12 in the Jayhawk League. They close out the road trip Thursday night in Dodge City.

Incoming KU Freshman Quarterback Charged With Assault

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP)— Brock Berglund, an incoming freshman quarterback with the Kansas Jayhawks, has been charged with 3rd degree assault in Colorado. Berglund is scheduled to appear at a pre-trial conference in Douglas County, Colorado. The complaint was filed on June 24th.

According to eyewitnesses, Berglund allegedly came to the defense of his girlfriend after she was allegedly being harassed. Alcohol is not believed to be involved in the matter.

Berglund has made off-season headlines by wavering about when he would come to campus in Lawrence. 3rd degree assault is a Class 1 Misdemeanor in Colorado.

Larks Rally Past Liberal

The Hays Larks turn three double plays and the bullpen pitches 4 1/3 scoreless innings as they defeat the Liberal Bee Jays 9-5 Tuesday night at Brent Gould Field in Liberal. 

For a fourth straight game, the Larks score three in the first and led 4-2 before Liberal came back with three in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. The Larks tie the game on a Cody Gougler groundout in the seventh then take the lead one inning later on an Elvin Rodriguez two-run single. Sean Wilson followed with his first home run in three years with the team for the final margin.

Starter Jose Gomez allowed all five Liberal runs on eight hits over 4 2/3 innings, but the bullpen picked him up not allowing another run the rest of the way. Matt Schmit picks up the win with 2 1/3 scoreless innings.

The Larks, who have won seven of their last nine league games, are now 24-13 and 16-11 in the Jayhawk League where they move back into a first-place tie with Haysville. They close out the series in Liberal Wednesday before heading to Dodge City Thursday for the final game of the road trip.

The Hays Eagles Senior American Legion wins their “AAA” Zone tournament opener, defeating Great Bend 3-1 Tuesday night in Dodge City.

Hayden Hutchison moves to 7-4 with a nine inning complete game outing. Clayton Basgall led the offense, going 4-for-5 with two doubles.

The Eagles improve to 27-16 and await the Great Bend/Dodge City winner tonight at seven o’clock.

Duffy, Treanor Lift Royals Past Chicago

Rookie Danny Duffy overcame a 2-run first inning to lift the Royals past the White Sox 4-2 Tuesday.

Matt Treanor’s two-run single in the sixth inning was the difference as the Kansas City Royals defeat the Chicago White Sox 4-2 in the middle game of their three-game series at Kauffman Stadium.

Rookie Danny Duffy struggled early but settle down to throw seven strong innings for the win. The lefty allowed two runs on five hits and two walks for his second win since being called up to the big leagues in late May. 

Joakim Soria faced the minimum in the ninth for his 17th save and tenth in the last ten tries.

Melky Cabrera homered in the seventh gave the Royals a two-run cushion.

Bruce Chen makes the start tonight for the Royals with pre-game at 6:35pm on KAYS.

Larks Let Early Lead Slip Away In Loss To Dodge City

The Hays Larks squander an early 3-0 lead and lose 8-4 to Dodge City Monday night at Larks Park, snapping their four-game win streak.

Sloan Soulia’s 2-run homer gave the Larks the 3-0 lead in the first inning but they wouldn’t score again until MacKenzie Handel’s RBI single in the fourth.

The A’s (18-19, 11-17 JL) came back with two in the fourth, three in the fifth, one in the sixth then two more in the eighth for the final margin.

The Larks pound out 12 hits in the game but strand ten runners including eight in scoring position.

Andrew Heck allowed five runs, four earned, on ten hits over five innings and takes the loss in his first start of the season. Cody Gougler had three hits and an RBI.

The Larks drop to 23-12 and 15-11 in the Jayhawk League where they fall a half-game behind Haysville who’s playing in the NBC Midwest Regional this week. The Larks begin their final road trip of the summer with the first of two in Liberal Tuesday night. The road swing ends with a game in Dodge City Thursday.
