Hays Eagles Sweep Salina

The Hays Eagles pull off a rare sweep in Salina.

The Hays Eagles Senior American Legion baseball team hand the Salina Falcons their first doubleheader sweep of the season, winning 11-9 and 10-5 last night at Dean Evans Stadium.

Daniel Braun worked out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh, allowing just one run to preserve the win in game one. The Eagles never trailed in the game, sending 11 to the plate in a five-run fifth. Jarrett Sanders had two doubles and drove in two. Hayden Hutchison added a two-run homer.

The Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second game. The Falcons pulled within a run in the third until Hays scored six in the sixth to break it open. Clayton Basgall worked 6 1/3 innings allowing only four hits and just one past the third.

The Eagles are now 18-8 and host Dodge City in a doubleheader tonight at 6 o’clock at Larks Park.

Weather Denies Monarchs A Sweep

Hays Monarchs Win One Game In Dodge City

The Hays Monarchs win the opener of a doubleheader in Dodge City 6-5 before weather caused the second game to end in the third inning. Krayton Werth picked up the victory for the Monarchs. The Monarchs are in Ellis for two tonight beginning at 6 o’clock.

Royals Lose In San Diego

The Royals are still winless at PETCO Park in San Diego. Last night Clayton Richard won for the first time in 12 home starts in the Padres 4-2 victory.

Richard held the Royals to two runs on five hits over seven innings. The Padres scored one in the first and two in the second in building a 3-1 lead.

Royals starter Felipe Paulino drops to 0-2, allowing four runs, three earned, on 11 hits over seven innings, striking out seven and walking just one.

Jeff Francoeur homered and threw a runner out at the plate. Alex Gordon’s 13-game hit streak came to and end.

The Royals have now lost eight of their last ten with seven of those losses by two runs or less.

Bruce Chen goes in the series finale this afternoon with Royals pre-game at 2 o’clock on KAYS.

FHSU Soccer Adds Five Signees

Fort Hays State men’s soccer coach Brett Parker announced the signing of five more student-athletes for the 2011 season. These five players join the 31 previously announced signings in the inaugural recruiting class. Among the signees are two transfers, including one from an NCAA Division I school, and three who will join the program as freshman in 2011. Below is further information on each signee.

Travis Patzner – 6-2 – D – Sr.-TR – Hays, Kan. (Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne)

Played two seasons at Barton (Kan.) CC, starting 39 of 40 career games for the Cougars. Helped lead the team to a 38-3-2 record in his two years, anchoring a defense that allowed only 8 goals in 22 games during his sophomore season. Transferred to Division I Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) for the 2010 season, making 13 starts for the Mastodons.

Roberto Rivera – 5-10 – MF – Jr.-TR – Las Vegas, Nev. (Allen County (Kan.) CC)

Played for two seasons at Allen County (Kan.) CC for Coach Doug Desmarteau

Diego Cabral – 5-6 – F – Fr.-HS – Asuncion, Paraguay (Colegio Cristo Rey)

Competed for three years at the youth level for Paraguayian 1st Division side Club Tacuary from U-16 through U-18. Played for Cristo Rey HS for five seasons, winning several tournaments and MVP awards.

Carlos Linares – 6-0 – D – Fr.-HS – Aurora, Colo. (Rangeview HS)

A three-year starter for the Colorado Rapids Development Academy and 2011 team captain. Played for coach Vic Strouse at Rangeview HS and was named 2010 Eastern Metro Athletic Conference MVP as well as First Team All-City by the Aurora Sentinel.

Frankie Zitnik – 6-2 – D – Fr.-HS – Lenexa, Kan. (St. James Academy)

Four-year starter at St. James Academy for coach Rick Enna. Named First Team All-State in 2009 and Second Team in 2010. Helped his team to the 2009 Class 4A State Championship and a third place finish in 2010. Played club soccer for the KCFC Blues, qualifying for the state cup semi-finals in 2010 and 2011.

 

Two Hays High Softball Players Honored

Hays High’s Katelyn Schumacher and Makenzie Flaska have both been named to the first-team of the 5A All-State softball team. Flaska as an infielder and Schumacher as a utility player.

Schumacher, a sophomore, hit .486 and as a pitcher, led the Indians with 15 wins including one at the state tournament. Flaska, a junior, hit .432 and led the squad in home runs and RBI’s.

Royals Drop One-Run Game In San Diego

The Kansas City Royals remain winless at PETCO Park, losing 4-3 to the Padres in their series opener last night. Ryan Ludwick hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Mat Latos won for the first time in four starts.

The Royals trailed 4-1 before scoring two in the sixth on Brayan Pena’s two-out, two-run double. Jeff Francis drops to 3-9, allowing four runs, three earned on five hits over five innings.

Felipe Paulino makes the start tonight as the Royals look for their first ever win at PETCO Park. Royals pre-game at 8:30pm tonight on KAYS.

Royals To Use 6-man Rotation At Least Until Break

SAN DIEGO (AP) – Kansas City manager Ned Yost says the Royals will go with a six-man rotation at least until the All-Star break.

Kyle Davies is ready to come off the disabled list and rookie Danny Duffy is pitching well enough that the Royals don’t want to send him down. Yost says the move will help give the Royals a chance to stay healthy.

Big Innings Lifts Liberal To Sweep Of Larks

Jon Ryan hit a 3-run homer in the first inning to tie the Larks and Bee Jays at 3-3. The Larks were swept in the weekend series at Larks Park.

The Liberal Bee Jays continue their dominance over the Hays Larks, sweeping 2-game weekend series and moving to 4-0 in the season series with a 13-5 win Sunday night at Larks Park.

Both teams scored three in the first. The Larks tied the game on Jon Ryan’s -3-run homer to right field. Hays took the lead in the third on a Cody Gougler single. Liberal took the lead back with four in the fourth then blew the game open with a five-run eighth.

Larks starter Andy Lewton struggled, allowing seven runs on eight hits in four innings, dropping to 2-1. Sean Wilson, Sloan Soulia and Elvin Rodgriguez all had four hits as the Larks drop to 13-7 and 7-6 in the Jayhawk League.

The Larks are off Monday before hosting Dodge City Tuesday night at 7pm.

Gordon, Hochevar Lead Royals Over Cubs

The Kansas City Royals take two of three from the Cubs, winning the series finale 6-3 Sunday at Kauffman Stadium.

The Royals strike for four in the first then tack on two big runs in the bottom of the fourth after the Cubs had scored two in the top of the inning to pull within a run.

Luke Hochevar moved to 5-8, picking up just his second victory in his last ten starts, allowing three runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings. Alex Gordon extended his hitting streak to 13 games with an RBI double in the first.

Jeff Francis makes the start for the Royals tonight as they open up a nine-game road trip with the first of three in San Diego. Royals pre-game at 8:30pm.

TBF Central Division Championship at Lake Wilson

Lake Wilson is hosting its biggest ever Bass Tournament this week, a regional qualifier tourney for the Bass Federation Central Division Championship Wednesday through Friday.  The TBF tourney is expected to attract about 190 fishermen and family members.  Weigh-ins are at 2:30p.m. each day at the Wilson State Park Hell Creek boat ramp.

Saturday, Wilson Lake will host the Kansas High School State Fishing Championship.

Kansas Wildlife and Parks has their 40-foot long mobile fish aquarium on display Friday and Saturday.

Larks Sweep Doubleheader With Sox

The Hays Larks take advantage of two walks and a wild pitch as they rally for four runs with two outs in the fifth inning to beat the Colorado Sox 7-4 in game two of their non-league doubleheader last night at Larks Park. The Larks took the opener 6-3.

Cody Gougler, who drove in three in the second game, hit a two-run single in the big inning for the final margin. Starter Connor Beer gave up four runs on four hits in the third. Eastern Oklahoma’s Nick Goza allowed just one hit over the final 2 1/3 innings for the win.

In the opener, the Larks score two in the first on a Cam Brown 2-run homer then tack on three in the fourth. Chandler-Gilbert’s Hunter Herdt picks up the win going five innings and allowing just two runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking none.

The wins move Hays to 12-5 on the year. They go for the series sweep Friday night when the two play a seven-inning game. Admission is free thanks to Eagle Communication.

8-Man All-Star Game Tomorrow At Lewis Field

24 of the best 8-Man football players from Kansas will be taking on 24 of the best from Nebraska in the fourth annual Kansas/Nebraska 8-Man All-Star Challenge Saturday night at Lewis Field.

Seven area players will participate including two from Hill City’s state runner-up team. Reggie Jordan and Tyler Bess are joined by Ringneck coach Chris Shank will be an assistant on the Kansas squad.

Other area players include Dylan Kuhn from Victoria, Sam Leighton from Quinter, Jakob DeMars & Ben Webb from Osborne and Mike Hlavaty from Otis-Bison.

Nebraska has won the last two games and leads the series 2-1.

Royals Swept At Home By Arizona

Royals starter Filipe Paulino settled down after a rough early start but the Kansas City offense couldn’t catch up in Arizona’s 5-3 win for the series sweep at Kauffman Stadium.

The Diamondbacks scored all five of their runs over the first four innings before Paulino retired 13 straight. His eight-plus innings match the longest outing in his career, striking out eight and walking only one.

Arizona starter Daniel Hudson pitched seven strong innings for his ninth win. Alex Gordon extended his hitting streak to ten games.

Bruce Chen makes his return to the starting rotation tonight when the Royals host the Cubs. Royals pre-game at 6:35pm on KAYS(1400-AM).
