Kansas Wheat Forecast Unchanged, National Estimate Up

(AP) – Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service is sticking by its earlier forecast for the state’s winter wheat crop.

The agency reported in an update released Thursday that the size of this year’s crop is expected to be 261.8 million bushels from 7.7 million acres. That is unchanged from last month, but is down 27 percent from last year’s production. If realized it would be the smallest wheat crop in Kansas since 1996.

Wheat harvest began last week in south-central Kansas. The new forecast is based on crop conditions on June 1.

KASS says it expects yields to average 34 bushels per acre. That is the same as last month’s estimate, but is down 11 bushels an acre from a year ago. If realized, it would be the worst average yield since 2007.

Solar Flare Could Disrupt Earth Satellite Communications (WATCH)

NASA has released a statement about the large solar flare Tuesday, “The Sun unleashed an M-2 (medium-sized) solar flare, an S1-class (minor) radiation storm and a spectacular coronal mass ejection (CME) on June 7, 2011 from sunspot complex 1226-1227. The large cloud of particles mushroomed up and fell back down looking as if it covered an area of almost half the solar surface.”

Fortunately for the inhabitants of Earth the coronal mass ejection was not aimed directly at our planet and will strike Earth with Only a glancing blow. Still the solar flare has the potential to impact GPS systems, communications satellites, and power grids.

It should strike during the early evening June 8th (tonight, around 6 p.m.) through June 9th. The U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) issued a statement noting the solar flare released radiation greater than any seen since 2006.

Delta Airlines Rips Off American Soldiers Returning from Afghanistan (WATCH)

A video recorded by a pair of U.S. soldiers that had just returned from Afghanistan has created a firestorm of controversy for Delta Airlines.

Delta reportedly charged U.S. soldiers returning from Afghanistan $2,800 in baggage fees.

On Tuesday a couple of the soldiers posted a video to YouTube.

Army Staff Sgt. Robert O’Hair said, “We had four bags, and Delta Air Lines only allows three bags. Anything over three bags you have to pay for, even though there’s a contract between the United States government and Delta Air Lines: When returning from Afghanistan on military orders, you’re authorized up to four bags.”

The total for the 34 soldiers was reportedly more than $2,800. O’Hair’s fourth piece of luggage was his weapons case, which he said “protect myself and Afghan citizens while I was deployed in the country.”

Ellis County EMS Rehab Fund for Firefighters

These 100 degree temperatures are even harder on firefighters who’re also wearing heavy protective gear, and vulnerable to heat stress.  Ellis County Emergency Medical Services has organized a non-profit “Rehab Fund” to raise money for bottled water, neck coolers and other items to keep firefighters cool on the scene.

E-M-S employee Ryan Werth says the need became apparent during the response to last June’s deadly elevator collapse in Russell, when several firefighters succumbed to heat stroke.

A “Rehab Fund” fundraising booth featuring food and raffle tickets will be set up at Saturday’s Riverfest in Ellis.
