Kansas law school applications drop 23 percent

LAWRENCE, Kansas (AP) – The University of Kansas Law School says its applications declined 23 percent for this year compared with last year.

Law school officials say the decline in admissions is part of a national trend caused by a difficult legal job market. About 850 students applied to the law school this year, down from about 1,100 last year.

Stephen Mazza, law school dean, says nearly every law school in the country is reporting a drop in applications. He says the national average decline was 12 percent to 13 percent, although he says it’s probably increased since then.

Mazza tells The Lawrence Journal-World that the law school plans to hire a new director of admissions to replace one who resigned. It also will hire an assistant director and a seasonal recruiter.

Kansas Law allowing blind to carry concealed guns intact

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Kansas isn’t changing a law that allows blind people and others with serious physical disabilities to carry concealed guns, and one lawmaker says he expects even more changes to the concealed-carry law.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt expressed concern in February about the state’s inability to deny concealed carry applications to people who couldn’t safely handle a firearm. But a spokesman for Schmidt this week said the law was still intact and couldn’t point out any attempts by the attorney general to change it.

Republican Rep. Richard Carlson of St. Marys said he expects future changes to include pushing to remove a requirement that applicants pass a shooting test.

Kansas drug charges dropped against former heavyweight champ after trooper dies

EMPORIA, Kansas (AP) — Two Kansas drug charges against former heavyweight boxing champion Tommy Morrison have been dropped because the state trooper who arrested him has died.

The Emporia Gazette reports the charges were dropped Monday in Lyon County District Court because Kansas Highway Patrolman Beau Wallace was killed May 26 in a motorcycle accident.

Morrison was charged with possession of hallucinogenic drugs with two prior convictions, a felony, and with misdemeanor possession with intent to use drug paraphernalia.

He was arrested Feb. 17 at the Kansas Turnpike service area four miles north of Emporia.

Wallace was killed when a 17-year-old pulled into the intersection from a stop sign and was struck by Wallace’s motorcycle.

Prosecutors say Wallace was the sole trooper in Morrison’s arrest and the case couldn’t go on without him.
