TMP-Marian Basketball Splits with Hutchinson-Trinity

GIRLS:  TMP 51, Trinity 29

Rachel Jacobs came out firing Thursday night in Hutchinson and led Thomas More Prep – Marian to a 51-29 victory over Trinity Catholic in their final game of the regular season.

The Lady Monarchs (17-3) trailed 3-2 early on in the game but went on a 12-0 run after that and never looked back in their first road game of the month.

Jacobs scored 10 points in the first quarter and 18 of her game-high 21 points in the first half. Tuesday’s game marked the 5th time Jacobs has scored above 20 points this season.

TMP led 27-13 at halftime and never had their lead cut to less than 20 in the fourth quarter.

TMP has now won 10 straight games and 15 of their last 16 contests.

The Lady Monarchs received the #1 seed in next week’s Lyons Sub-State and earned a bye for the first round. TMP will play either Russell or Minneapolis on Friday (3-2) in Lyons. Russell, the 4-seed, will host Minneapolis on Tuesday.

Another poor shooting night cost the Thomas More Prep – Marian boys’ basketball team Thursday night in Hutchinson. The Monarchs wrapped up the regular season with a 43-37 loss to Trinity Catholic.

TMP (11-9) jumped out to a 16-8 lead in the first quarter and led by five at halftime 24-19 but could not hold on in the second half.

Trailing by four in the fourth quarter, TMP’s Colby Schippers hit a runner in the lane to get the Monarchs to within two at 37-35. The Celtics (11-9) would close the game on mini 6-2 run to hand TMP their second loss this week.

The Herd was led in scoring by Kelton Schuckman and Nick Hammeke who had eight points each. TMP struggled to contain Trinity’s post player, Dustin Ohl, in the second half. Ohl scored 13 of his 21 points in the final two quarters of play.

The Monarchs have little time to worry about Thursday’s loss. TMP, who earned the #4 seed in next week’s Lyons Sub-State, will host St. John’s Military Academy on Monday at Al Billinger Fieldhouse. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 PM.

Trego Boys and Girls Defeat Quinter

The Trego Golden earned a pair of wins on Senior night to wrap up the regular season. The Quinter Bulldogs travels East on I70 to Quinter in the final Tuesday night of the regular season in high school basketball. With both teams still have a lot to play for it would take overtime for the Bulldogs and the Golden Eagles to determine a winner in the girl’s game.

Trego really had it going early in the first quarter. The Eagles made eight of 10 field goal attempts and jumped out to a 12-2 lead. Hannah Dietz spurred the first quarter run, chipping in 7 and Haley Dietz added four as the Eagles led 17-4 after one. Quinter’s Missy Reed kept to Bulldogs in the game scoring their first 10 points and then the rest of her teammates picked her up in the second quarter as they outscored Trego 15-2. Brooke Flax added six of her 17 in the second quarter as well. The two teams were tied at 19 at the half.

Coming out halftime it was much of the same for Quinter. The Bulldogs opened the third quarter with an 11-2 run and led 30-22, eight was their largest lead of the game. Lexi Riedel helped the Eagles cut the gap to just five, 35-30 after three. Riedel added seven more in the fourth quarter helping erase a five-point deficit and tie the game at 49 at the end of regulation.

In the overtime period the Eagle went back to what had worked early on, going inside. Haley Dietz had 11 of her 19 points as the Eagles came away with the 65-61 win. Quinter’s Missy Reed led all scorers with 20 points and Brooke Flax added 17. Haley Dietz and Lexi Riedel both had 19 for Trego.

The Eagles improve to 13-7 with the win and Quinter dropped to 8-11.

In the boys game tonight the Trego Golden Eagles used the 3-point shot to jump out to an early lead but had to hold on and weather the storm late to earn the win.

After Trego open up a 4-0 lead the Quinter Bulldogs took and 15-11 lead behind Brian Ochs’ 8 first quarter points but Trego close to quarter on 10 nothing run to take a 21-15 lead after one. Despite giving up at least three inches, Trego Devin Ghumm went right at Ochs on the inside and scored 8 first quarter points.

After making two three pointers in the first quarter the Eagles began the second quarter with two straight from John Griffith and they made eight threes in the game, six came in the first half. Trego’s largest lead of the game was 19 at 50-31 at the half. Quinter however would not go away in the game outscoring Trego by 10 in the second half.

Quinter’s Brian Ochs scored 11 of his game-high 23 points in the third quarter and Freshman Brett Christ had 14 points in the second half. But Trego’s hot start to the game was just too much as they come away with a 86-75 win. The two teams combined to shot 62 free throws, although neither team make more that half.

Ochs led all scorers with 23 and Crist added 21 and Jesse Ochs finished with 17 points. Brad Pfannenstiel was the high man for Trego with 19, John Griffith had 17 and Clayton Riedel added 16. Trego improves to 9-12 with the win and the Bulldogs drop to 7-12.

Scott City Defeats TMP Boys for the 6th Straight Time

BOYS:  Scott City 86, TMP 31

The Monarch boys were within five points a few minutes into the first quarter against the number one team in the state in Class 3A, but the Scott City Beavers went on a 12-0 run to finish the opening quarter and route Thomas More Prep – Marian 86-31 Monday night.

Monday’s action with Scott City was a makeup game that got postponed earlier this month. The final regular season home game for TMP resulted in the most points they have given up all year. (Previous high was 74 against Abilene)

With the defending 3A state champ leading by 47 points at the end of the third quarter the fans at Al Billinger Fieldhouse saw a continuous clock come into effect in the fourth period.

Scott City (18-1) had 13 different players score in the game including a game-high 18 points from their junior Drew Kite. TMP (11-8) was led by Jacob Fouts who had eight.

The Beavers have now won the last six meetings with the Monarchs. The last TMP win over Scott City was back in 2008.

TMP Girls Overcome Slow 1st Half to Beat Scott City

GIRLS:  TMP 61, Scott City 43

The Thomas More Prep – Marian girls’ basketball team had a slow start Monday night in Hays against Scott City but went on to win 61-43.

The Lady Beavers jumped out to a 10-2 lead to begin the game with TMP’s Jenna Lang on the bench. TMP, who has won nine straight games, received 19 points from Heather Ruder and an individual season-high 13 from Rebecca Pray.

Ness City boys and Victoria girls win on Friday Night

Friday night’s Y102 Area Game of the Week saw the Ness City Eagles and the Victoria Knights matchup in a Central Prairie League showdown. In the girls game it looked as though the Ness City lady Eagles would put an end to their seven game losing streak.

The Eagles jumped out to and 8-5 lead in the first quarter behind four from both Kenzie Stoeklein and Ashleigh Seib, and they led 12-11 after the first quarter. Victoria opened the second quarter on a 4-0 run, behind Audra Novak who scored 9 of her 20 points in the first half, and the Knights led 15-12. But Ness City answered with a 6-0 run of their own taking the lead 21-19 heading into the half. Ness City lead was seven after three quarters.

Into the fourth quarter Victoria went back to Nowak inside and closed the gap to 32-30. Ness City led by 5, 40-35 with just over two minutes let to play in the game but the lady Knights turned up the defense pressure and closed the game on a 7-0 run in the closing minutes. Kristin Huser knocked down a three to cut the lead to two and on the very next possession Audra Nowak tied the game at 40 with her 20th point of the night. Then Huser forced a turnover and took it the length of the floor and laid it home with 7.4 seconds left. Out of a timeout Huser stole the inbounds pass and sealed the 42-40 win for the Knights.

Audra Nowak led all scorers with 20 points and Huser finished with 8. Ashleigh Seib had a game-high 10 for Ness City and Erin Flax chipped in 9. Victoria improved to 13-6 while the Eagles dropped to 5-13.

In the boys matchup the Victoria Knights gave the Ness City Eagles all the wanted and even a little more but they fell short tonight 59-46. Victoria took a 4-3 early in the first quarter and that would be their only lead of the game. The first three shots Ness City made were 3-pointers and you get the feeling it could be that kind of night. Dalton Gantz knocked home the first two and Drew Clarke added one more in the opening quarter as Ness City led 13-4 after one.

The Eagles lead was as much as 11 early in the second quarter before that Knights went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to four but Koltyn Ratliff hit a three to extend the lead back to seven. Ness City led by five at halftime. The two teams traded baskets to begin the third quarter and Victoria got within three once and four a couple of times but trailed by nine after three.

Ness City closed out the third and begin the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run and came away with the 59-46 win. Ness City Colin Foos had 14 of his game-high 18 in the second half. Dalton Gantz and Drew Clarke both finished with 16 points. Sam Ottley scored 11 of his team-high 13 points for the Knights and Lane Braun added 10.

Ness City improves to 15-3 and the Knights fall to 8-11. The Knights are off until the 24th when they host Lincoln and the Eagles will host Dighton on Tuesday.
