(Photo/FHSU Athletics)

The Fort Hays State Tigers scored the first six points of the game then went on a 15-0 first half run to lead by as many 29 in the first half, beating the Missouri Western Griffons 66-53 Saturday afternoon at Gross Coliseum.

The Tigers used a 15-0 run, holding the Griffons without a field goal for over 10 minutes in the first half and led 41-17 at the half.

FHSU turned the ball over 19 turnovers resulting in 21 Griffon turnovers. The 13 point margin at the end was the closest MWSU could get in the second half.

Markus Yarbough led two Tigers in double-figures with 11 points. Karron McKenzie added 10. FHSU shot 46-percent from the floor, hit 5-of-15 3’s and 17-of-20 from the free throw line.

The game was played in front of members of the 1996 undefeated national championship team which was inducted into the Tiger Sports Hall of Fame along with their head coach Gary Garner.

No. 13 Kansas Upsets No. 2 Ohio State, 78-67

(AP Photo/Orlin Wagner)

LAWRENCE, Kan. –A complete team effort, highlighted by 58 percent shooting mark, powered No. 13 Kansas past the previously undefeated No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes, 78-67, Saturday afternoon in Allen Fieldhouse.

Using a balanced attack, all but one of the nine players KU head coach Bill Self checked into the game scored as Kansas (7-2) shot at a 58 percent clip for the second time this season, including a 65 percent mark in the first half. Senior guard Tyshawn Taylor dished out a career-high 13 assists – more than OSU had allowed to an opposing team this season. Off the bench, KU received a 21-4 scoring edge, highlighted by 14 points from junior forward Kevin Young, his most as a Jayhawk.

Junior forward Thomas Robinson’s 14 second-half points gave him a team-best 21 points to lead his team past Ohio State (8-1), which entered the matchup as the NCAA’s No.1 in scoring margin. Aside from Young, junior guards Elijah Johnson (15) and Travis Releford (10) also put up double figures.

Without the use of sophomore forward Jared Sullinger, junior forward Evan Ravenel made his second-career start for Ohio State (8-1) in the prominent big man’s place. The Kansas defense held him to nine points before he fouled out of the game with less than three minutes remaining.

OSU came out shooting at a 50 percent clip, but couldn’t keep pace with a Jayhawk squad that started the second half at a foreboding 80 percent. Two early threes from Johnson and another from Releford shoved the KU lead back to 10, 47-37, with 15 minutes to play.

Attempting just his second three-pointer of the year, Young nailed it to put the third Jayhawk in double figures. Taylor matched his effort with a runner through the paint and Kansas kept the distance at 59-48 with less than nine minutes remaining.

The country’s No. 2-ranked team would come on strong after Kansas tied its biggest lead of the day, 62-50, with an 8-2 run that prompted a 30-second timeout from the Kansas bench. Out of the pause, Releford dropped four-straight points to give Kansas breathing room heading into the final media timeout, 68-61.

Robinson’s sharp move to the basket resulted in the three-point play that fouled Ravenel out of the game, but provided another spark for the Buckeyes. Although Robinson would convert another and-one play less than a minute later, Ohio State’s Buford immediately answered with a three-point basket, cutting the lead to six, 73-67, in the final two minutes. Free throws from Robinson, Taylor and Releford would complete the upset for a 78-67 win.

Although sophomore guard Deshaun Thomas racked up 15 first-half points for OSU, he outscored the rest of his teammates combined in the first half, while Kansas held the Buckeyes to season-low shooting percentage (.387) and points scored (67) for the game. Thomas would score four points in the final frame, but senior guard William Buford stepped in for 17 second-half points, finishing with KU’s Robinson for the game’s lead with 21 points.

Johnson hit the first of his career-high five threes following a quick outlet from a Jeff Withey rebound and Kansas shot out to an early 9-2 lead. A three-point play by Robinson answered a three on OSU’s side of the floor to fuel the home team’s momentum. Kansas set quickly set the tone, shooting at a 75 percent clip compared to the Buckeyes’ 22 percent through the game’s first seven minutes.

After making his first career start on Tuesday, senior guard Conner Teahan came in off the bench to add five points to a 7-0 run that saw Kansas pick up its first double-digit advantage, 21-11, under the midway point of the first half.

In the meantime, the Kansas defense held Ohio State without a field goal for a 4:55 stretch until back-to-back threes from Thomas powered an 8-2 OSU run that cut the Jayhawk lead to five.

An offensive foul called against Buford ended the Buckeyes’ final threat of the opening frame. Kansas took a 35-29 lead into the break, the first halftime deficit of Ohio State’s season.

Good Second Half Lifts FHSU Women Past Missouri Western

The Fort Hays State Lady Tigers opened the second half with a 12-2 run to build a 16-point lead and never let Missouri Western any closer than 12 and defeat the Griffons 70-48 Saturday afternoon at Gross Coliseum.

The Tigers shot just 30-percent in the first half and led 27-21 at the break, but used runs of 12-2, 11-3 and 14-2 to go up as many as 24 in the second half.

The Lady Tigers shoot just 35-percent for the game including 9-24 from 3-point range. They hit 15-of-17 free throws and outrebound Missouri Western by 24.

Melissa Nelson came off the bench to lead the Tigers in scoring with 15 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Kate Edwards added 14 points and 11 boards while Traci Keyser scored 13.

TMP Boys Defeat Colby

TMP picks up back-to-back wins against Colby.

The Monarch boys’ basketball team completed the sweep on Colby again this year as they handed the Eagles a 60-44 loss Thursday night in Colby at the Colby Community Building.

After defeating them by 25 points in the 7th-place contest in the Hays City Shootout last Saturday, Thomas More Prep – Marian got off to a quick start against the 0-5 Eagles. The Monarchs also overcame two technical fouls to garner their second win of the season.

TMP (2-2) started the contest on a 7-0 run before eventually taking a 28-17 lead into halftime. Colby would make things interesting in the third quarter by trimming the Monarchs’ lead down to four but TMP would put them away down the stretch with solid play from seniors Nick Hammeke and Drew O’Brien.

Hammeke connected on four 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 16 points. O’Brien scored seven of his eight points in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. Both performances were season highs for both Hammeke and O’Brien.

Sophomore Luke Cox and junior Todd Kane each had 11 points to lead Colby.

TMP returns to action next Tuesday night when they travel north to take on Phillipsburg.

K-State Falls In Double-Overtime To West Virginia

WICHITA, Kan.– Rodney McGruder led Kansas State with 20 points, while freshman Thomas Gipson recorded his second double-double of the season, but Kansas State suffered its first defeat of the season in an 85-80 double-overtime thriller against West Virginia at a sold-out INTRUST Bank Arena.

The loss, which pitted Wildcat head coach Frank Martin against his long-time mentor and friend Bob Huggins for the first time since he took over the West Virginia program, moved K-State to 5-1 on the season, while the Mountaineers improved to 5-2.

After a back-and-forth game, which saw nine lead changes and 17 ties, the Mountaineers were able to seal the game with a 7-2 run in the second overtime. Kevin Jones led West Virginia with a game-high 30 points and 12 rebounds. Six of his points were scored in the two overtimes combined. In addition to McGruder’s 20 points, Will Spradling added 16 points, while Gipson had 15 points and 10 rebounds.

K-State led by as many as seven points in the first half and held on to a slim 31-30 halftime lead. McGruder and Spradling had eight points apiece in the first period. The Wildcats opened the game with a 9-2 run highlighted by a Spradling three-pointer. West Virginia then used a 13-4 run to take a 13-15 lead. K-State and West Virginia would continue to trade baskets throughout the half.

At the start of the second half, the Wildcats started on a 10-4 run to extend its lead to 41-34. K-State led for the majority of the second half until the Mountaineers tied the game for the first time in the period at 54-54 off of a Gary Browne layup. In the closing seconds K-State took a 64-61 with 22 seconds remaining after a Gipson layup. Jones then knocked down a crucial game-tying three-pointer with 14 seconds left. K-State had one more chance to win it in regulation but McGruder’s last-second attempt came up short.

In the first overtime, both teams would continue to trade baskets. A Darryl Bryant free-throw gave the Mountaineers a two point lead with 20 seconds left, but a McGruder jumper tied it up at 74. Bryant missed a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the game to a second overtime.

West Virginia would then take command in the second extra period to seal the win. Despite tying the game twice in the second overtime, K-State missed its final five shots after tying the game at 80. A Jones jumper gave the visitors the lead for good as they scored the game’s final five points.

TMP Girls Lose to Colby

Rough second half dooms TMP girls in Colby.

The Thomas More Prep-Marian Girls drop back-to-back ballgames after starting 2-0 as they stumble Thursday night in Colby 44-34 at the Colby Community Building.

The Lady Monarchs jumped out to a 4-0 lead to begin the game but just had too many stretches where they couldn’t buy a bucket.

TMP found themselves down by seven in the second quarter but then went on a 9-0 run to get a 19-17 lead right before halftime. Colby’s Lauren Bell connected on a 3-pointer right before the buzzer to give the Lady Eagles (2-3) a one-point lead at the break. Bell finished with 11 points in the contest.

TMP (2-2) battled in the second half but were only able to score five points in the fourth quarter going on to lose by 10.

Lady Monarch senior Jenna Lang finished the evening with 12 points while fellow senior Rachel Jacobs put in eight points. Jacobs, the Most Inspirational Player from the Hays City Shootout last weekend, did not play at all in the fourth quarter.

Colby received a nice boost from sophomore Haileigh Shull who came off the bench to score 13 points.

TMP will look to bounce back next Tuesday as they travel to Phillipsburg.

Kansas Hires Charlie Wies As New Football Coach

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Former Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis has been hired at Kansas.

Weis will be introduced during a news conference Friday afternoon on campus, where he’ll try to rebuild a program that won the Orange Bowl just a few years ago but floundered under Turner Gill.

Weis is wrapping up his first season as offensive coordinator atFlorida after spending one season directing the Kansas City Chiefs’ offense. But his most extensive college experience came with the Fighting Irish, where he went 35-27 in five seasons.

The 55-year-old former New England Patriots assistant has also spent time with the New York Jets and New York Giants.

Kansas athletic director Sheahon Zenger is hopeful that his high profile will energize a fan base that had grown apathetic under Gill, who was fired after going 5-19 in just two seasons..

1996 National Championship Team, Coach Gary Garner To Be Inducted Into Tiger Sports Hall of Fame Saturday

(Photo/FHSU Athletics)

The 1995-96 undefeated Fort Hays State National Championship team returns this Saturday, December 10, for the basketball games against Missouri Western. The team and head coach Gary Garner will be inducted into the Tiger Sports Hall of Fame that morning, then will be recognized in the afternoon at the basketball games beginning at 2 and 4 pm at Gross Memorial Coliseum.

The 1995-96 team finished a perfect 34-0, defeating Northern Kentucky in the national title game 70-63 to claim Fort Hays State’s first and only NCAA II National Championship to date in any sport. It was the third national championship in the history of FHSU men’s basketball, after the Tigers won back-to-back NAIA National Championships in 1984 and 1985. It was the eighth national championship overall for FHSU, after the cross country program claimed four NAIA titles in the 1960s and the women’s basketball team claimed an NAIA title in 1990-91.

Members of the 1995-96 national championship team include Chad Creamer, Geoff Eck, Mark Eck, Alonzo Goldston, Sherick Simpson, Earl Tyson, Anthony Pope, Jeremie Kester, Matt Starkey, Brooke Thompson, Lance Hammond, Head Coach Gary Garner, Assistant Coaches Swede Trenkle, Phil Cook, and Gregg Hackerott, and Manager Doug Bigge.

The team will be honored at halftime of the men’s game against Missouri Western.

(Photo/FHSU Athletics)

The Fort Hays State Tigers were held to  31-percent shooting and outrebounded by 16 as they drop their first game of the season 61-45 at home to Washburn Tuesday night.

The Ichabods used a 12-3 run to build a seven-point first half lead and were up five at halftime. The never trailed past the 6:37 mark of the first half and pushed the lead as high as 16 in the second half.

Fort Hays State (7-1, 1-1 MIAA) hit just 7-of-26 3-point attempts and were outscored 32-12 in the paint.

Lance Russell scored nine and grabbed five rebounds to lead Fort Hays. Matt Simmons and Kendrick Morse both score seven.
