NEW YORK (AP) – Following up on a burst of momentum in NFL labor talks, negotiating teams for owners and players are meeting again to try and reach a tentative deal on a new collective bargaining agreement.
Two people familiar with the negotiations tell The Associated Press that significant progress was mad Thursday on a major sticking point – soaring rookie salaries. That’s raised hopes an agreement in principle is in sight Friday, though there are still some key issues to be recolved an any handshake deal would need to go through a significant approval process.
The people spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because details of teh talks aimed at ending the NFL’s four-month-long lockout are not being publicly announced.
NFLPA chief DeMaurice Smith says he knows “our fans are frustrated” and want the two sides to get a deal done. He and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell are leading their respective negotiating teams.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Roger Clemens will have to wait until September to find out if he’ll start a new trial on charges of lying to Congress about using performance-enhancing drugs.
On the second day of testimony today, a judge in Washington declared a mistrial — after prosecutors showed evidence to the jury that the judge had said they couldn’t show. The judge said the former pitching star couldn’t receive a fair trial after that.
Clemens and his lawyers are still under a court gag order, and they didn’t comment as they left the courthouse. Clemens signed autographs and a couple of baseballs for fans.
The issue that caused the mistrial involved testimony from Clemens’ former teammate and close friend Andy Pettitte, who says Clemens told him in 1999 or 2000 that he used human growth hormone. Pettitte also says he told his wife, Laura, about the conversation the day it happened. Prosecutors had wanted to call Laura Pettitte to back up the account, but the judge had said he wasn’t inclined to allow it. But in a video that prosecutors showed to jurors, a congressman referred to Pettitte’s conversation with his wife.
The judge said prosecutors had made a grave mistake. Prosecutors said he could just tell the jury to disregard what they saw — but the judge said he couldn’t “un-ring the bell.”

Ethan Leiter drove in five runs and Aaron Cornell had four RBI’s as the Hays Larks built an early lead then had to rally for a 12-11 win in Haysville Wednesday night.

Haysville responded with four in the third. The Larks tack on three in the fourth on an Aaron Cornell three-run homer, but Heat come back with four in the bottom of the inning to pull within a run. They would grab an 11-10 lead heading into the eighth but the Larks tie it on a Cornell double then take the lead on a Cody Gougler single to right.
Nick Goza pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for his fourth win of the season. Michael Burchett worked a perfect ninth for his seventh save. Starter Andy Lewton was roughed up for six runs, three earned, on six hits in 3 1/3 innings.
The Larks improve to 20-12 and 14-10 in the Jayhawk League and are back within a game of the front-running Heat. The two close out their series Thursday night.

The Kansas City Royals resume play following the All-Star break in Minnesota with the first of a four-game series Thursday night at Target Field. Lefty Bruce Chen makes the start for Kansas City against Twins lefty Francisco Liriano. Both have won five games so far this season.
The Royals are 37-54. The Twins are 41-48 but have been one of the hottest teams in the American League over the last several months and are just 6 1/2 games out in the AL Central.
Royals pre-game at 6:35pm on KAYS.

The Hays Larks lose their fourth straight road game Tuesday night, falling 5-2 to the first-place Haysville Heat.
