Stadium Place Apartments To Be Auctioned

HAYS, Kan. (AP) – Apartments on the Fort Hays University campus will go up for auction this week.

The Stadium Place Apartments will be auctioned at a sheriff’s sale at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Ellis County Courthouse.

Commerce Bank filed a foreclosure on the apartments. Bank president Tom Thomas says the bank’s attorney will make an opening bid to protect its interest.

Fort Hays official Mike Barnett says the university also plans to bid on the apartments.

In its foreclosure petition, Commerce Bank said Uniplace — a company created to build the apartments — was in default of about $3.79 million plus interest.

Body found inside car pulled from Kansas lake

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – Shawnee County coroners continue to work to identify remains found in a car that was submerged in Lake Shawnee.

Shawnee County sheriff’s Lt. Phil Higdon says coroners have been able to verify that at least one set of adult human remains was in the car when it was pulled from the lake Saturday near the Shawnee Yacht Club. The person’s gender could not be immediately determined.

Higdon says the car apparently was in the lake for a long time. Officers were also having trouble gathering information on the car, which was an older model Oldsmobile. Higdon says crews couldn’t find the license plate or vehicle identification number.

The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks found the car a few months ago while testing new radar equipment.

Dealerships ordered to stop donating vehicles to KU coaches

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – The state has ordered car dealers to stop donating vehicles with dealers plates to coaches and other employees at the University of Kansas athletic department.

The Kansas Department of Revenue notified five dealerships across the state to no longer use dealer plates on donated vehicles.

The department says the practice violated a state law that allows owners and sales people at car dealerships to display the plates on vehicles they drive.

But the law does not allow people outside the dealership to use the plates because counties do not receive registration fees or property taxes on cars carrying the dealership tag.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports that the department did not estimate how many cars were improperly tagged, or for how long. The dealerships will not be fined.

Kansas school board to discuss budget issues

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – Even before the next state budget takes effect in Kansas, the State Board of Education will start discussing the spending plan that will follow it.

The 10-member board is scheduled to begin its regular monthly meeting Tuesday, and the state’s fiscal year 2013 budget is on the agenda.

Kansas will start its 2012 fiscal year July 1. The $13.8 billion spending plan that will take effect reduces general state aid to public schools by $232 million, or 5.6 percent. That’s all but certain to force the state’s 289 school districts to consider laying off teachers and other personnel.

Gov. Sam Brownback won’t present his fiscal 2013 budget proposals to legislators until they reconvene in January. But agencies submit their proposals to his staff well before then.
