Heat Stresses Cattle

Forecast maps are showing extreme levels of livestock heat stress for Kansas and a few surrounding states during late June and early July. While heat stress can’t be avoided, it can be managed through planning and preparation.

Todd Domer with the Kansas Livestock Association says water availability is the most important and controllable factor. Domer says insuring shade and airflow are other ways to protect cattle.

Fort Riley Investigating Soldier’s Death

FORT RILEY, Kan (AP) – Fort Riley officials have released more information about a soldier found dead in his barracks room on the northeast Kansas post.

But, there’s still no word on how 21-year-old Spc. Nathan Conley died.  The Army said Wednesday the investigation is continuing.

Conley was found dead around 5:30 am Monday in his barracks room at the Warrior Transition Battalion.  Conley was an M-1 armor crewman who deployed to Iraq from November 2010 until February of this year, when he was assigned to the Warrior Transition Battalion.

The battalion supports the rehabilitation and transition of wounded, ill, and injured soldiers back to active duty or to veteran status.

KS National Guard Sending More Soldiers To NE Kansas County

ELWOOD, Kansas (AP) — The Kansas National Guard is sending two dozen more soldiers to a northeastern county in danger of being swamped by the Missouri River.

Maj. Gen. Lee Tafanelli, the state’s emergency management director, said Tuesday the 24 soldiers will augment security patrols and help with evacuations if needed in Doniphan County.

Tafanelli says the deployment was requested by county officials and the mayor of Elwood, which sits on the flood plain across the river from St. Joseph, Mo.

The National Guard already has 10 soldiers in Doniphan County patrolling levees and checking their conditions.

Voluntary evacuations are under way in Elwood. Many in the town of about 1,200 people remember well the flood of 1993, when the Missouri River rolled across fields and rose several feet high in houses and other buildings.

Royals Swept In San Diego

Bruce Chen and the Royals lost 4-1 in San Diego.

Kansas Man Admits To Murdering 16-Year-Old Girl

GARDEN CITY, Kansas (AP) – A southwest Kansas man who faced trial next month has admitted killing a 16-year-old girl in December 2008.

De Anda admitted inviting Julia Quintana, of Deerfield, to his home to watch a movie on Dec. 13, 2008. At some point he attacked and choked her, then took her body outside and dumped it in a trash bin.

The victim was a former classmate of De Anda at Garden City’s New Outlook Academy.

Heat Wave Threatens Area Livestock, Crops

WICHITA, Kansas (AP) – A heat wave engulfing Kansas for the next few days is threatening cattle in the state’s feedlots while further stressing crops already struggling with drought conditions.

Feedlot owners are making preparations to cope with triple-digit temperatures expected across much of the state.

In the northeastern town of Muscotah, feedlot owner Terry Handke says the heat index for livestock is expected to reach emergency levels on Thursday and into the weekend.

His operation is preparing by removing all manure, so that workers can wet the cattle down to lower the temperature in pens. He’ll also be feeding the bulk of his daily rations in late afternoon.

Kansas farmers expect the heat to cause some yield losses to spring-planted crops, such as corn.

Ziegler Carries Larks To Win

Larks snap 3-game Jayhawk League losing streak with shutout win over Dodge City.

The right-hander, who was making his first start of the season, threw a a no-hitter through six before allowing a leadoff single in the seventh. Ziegler allowed just the one hit over seven innings and nearly matched his season strikeout total with nine in the Larks 5-0 victory.

The Larks scored a run in the first, two in the third then single runs in the sixth and seventh. Shortstop Elvin Rodriguez had three hits and drove in a run. Aaron Cornell homered  in the first as the Larks improve to 14-7 and 8-6 in the Jayhawk League.

Kirk Jewasko is scheduled to start Wednesday night for the Larks as they make a return trip to Dodge City.
