Hannah Maria Thomas

Screen Shot 2016-08-05 at 10.10.05 AMHannah Maria Thomas went to her heavenly home on August 4, 2016 at 4:40 am following a long battle with the BEAST, called cancer. Her final days were spent at home so she could be close to her family and the animals she loved so much.

Hannah was born in Hays, KS October 29, 2004. She is the 6th child of Ward and Tanya (Bohacz) Thomas. Her 5 brothers, Ean, Nathan, Shiloh, Mario, and Gabriel; 2 sisters, Lucretia and Natalee; and her precious dog, Jubilee, survive her.

Hannah’s spirit touched many at the hospitals across the country that she visited, camps she attended, and community events she participated in. Her strong and courageous spirit is a testament to our Lord’s Word – “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous, do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

Hannah’s life was a gift to us from our loving God. He created her with an outstanding love and appreciation of animals. She cherished her hogs, rabbits, goats, chickens, ducks, and most importantly her calves that she bought and raised under her business name HT Livestock. She loved her time being a 4-H member and showing at the county fair. Hannah loved to hunt with her daddy and anyone else who would allow her to tag along. Hannah also enjoyed spending time at the lake with her family boating, tubing and camping. She loved to watch cooking shows with her brothers and bake. She was a Dallas Cowboy fan and dreamed of attending Kansas State University to study Animal Science to pursue her life dream of being a rancher’s wife.

Hannah’s battle with cancer began December 18, 2009. She was diagnosed with Wilms Tumor, a rare pediatric kidney cancer. It accounts for about 5% of all childhood cancers. Wilms tumor occurs most often in young children between the ages of 3 and 4. It is uncommon after age 6. Only 4% of cancer research in the United States is given to pediatric cancers. We ask that you join us in finding the cure that takes 7 children every day from their families.

A funeral service will be held Sunday, August 7, 2016 at the Town Site Shelter at Webster State Park at 4:00 P.M. with Pastor Tim Clever officiating. Visitation will be held Saturday, 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. at Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home in Stockton. Private interment will be in Bethany Cemetery near Hunter, Kansas.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent in care of Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home, 723 N. 1st, Stockton, KS 67669, to:

Pablove Foundation: A pediatric cancer foundation that provides research grant monies for one of the clinical trials that Hannah was on and gave her extra days with us.

HT Livestock Memorial Scholarship Fund: A Scholarship fund available for Rooks, Mitchell, and Phillips Counties senior ladies attending Kansas State University pursuing a degree in Animal Science.

Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.plumeroverlease.com.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas woman is scheduled to be sentenced next month for attempting to give her daughters Kool-Aid laced with prescription drugs.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that the sentencing is set for Sept. 2 for Shakina Dauniel Lawton. She pleaded guilty in February to two counts of attempted murder. Before making the plea agreement, Lawton faced two charges of attempted first-degree murder.

Senior assistant district attorney Todd Hiatt said her daughters were 14 and 9 when Lawton brought them into the kitchen, where she gave them the medication-laced Kool-Aid. The older daughter called 911 and told dispatchers her mother was trying to poison her and her sister.

Hiatt said that Lawton hadn’t been taking her medication for mental health ailments, including bipolar disorder and depression.

2016 NBC World Series championship game to air on ESPNU

National Baseball Congress Release

ESPNU LogoWICHITA, Kan. – The National Baseball Congress (NBC) World Series championship game can be seen in homes across the nation next week. The final game of the tournament, scheduled for Saturday, August 13, at 7 p.m. CST, can be viewed live on ESPNU, and will also be available on ESPN3 via the WatchESPN app.

Visit Wichita and the National Baseball Congress have teamed up to produce and air the championships so that people across the nation can share in the excitement of this 82-year tradition held in Wichita.

“This tournament has sparked lasting memories in families for more than eight decades so to air it on national television and share it with the fans of ESPN just makes sense,” said Susie Santo, president & CEO of Visit Wichita.” Collegiate players in this tournament go on to do great things in baseball and they can say they got their start right here in Wichita. It’s an honor to be home to such an unforgettable experience.”

For the first time in tournament history, a team comprised of former major league players will be taking the field. Roger Clemens, Adam LaRoche, Nate Robertson and more will be competing in the NBC World Series as “The Kansas Stars.” The Stars are scheduled to play at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6; 7 p.m. on Aug. 8; and 7 p.m. on Aug. 10. They could play more games if they advance out of pool play.

“We are thrilled to host these former MLB stars in the NBC World Series,” said Kevin Jenks, tournament director. “Many got their start here at this stadium so to see them come back and play in the tournament is exciting. They, like every other team here, though, have to compete to get to that final game, which will be aired nationwide. We can’t wait to see them take the field this weekend.”

Should The Kansas Stars take the national trophy, they will donate the prize money to charity.

Hays Academy of Hair Design brings home national honors

Empowered through their courage of competition in the North American Trendvision Awards (NATVA), Hays Academy of Hair Design students Micha Johnston and Megan Hertel have launched themselves into national spotlight.

These talented women represented themselves and Hays Academy with pride as they placed 1st and 3rd in the USA Student category in Las Vegas! In addition to these early industry pioneers, our very own Danielle Markley was awarded with the Wella Trendvision Educator of the Year. Social media was on fire as people were searching for Hays Academy of Hair Design in Hays and Salina, Kansas and wondering how our school of about 80 students placed two in the top three on such big of a stage while having the top educator as well. Raw talent, a dedicated and inspiring staff and attention to industry trends are just a part of this success, but overall, it was these students faith in their education that created their success.

Ashley Paulson, Campus Manager and Instructor at Hays Academy of Hair Design-Salina Campus was in attendance and said she was absolutely blown away by the creativity and attention to detail all of the students portrayed in this category. As a competitor in industry professionals events, she said the Trendvision show, in and of itself, was by far the best she had attended. Ashley took away three specific points from the NATVA show:

1. Competition changes you! Whether you entered and didn’t make it or you won on the big stage, you grow every time you compete! I strongly encourage every student and licensed hairdresser to compete as often as possible!

2. If you ever have the chance to experience TrendVision in person, GO!! Save the money, work a little harder, make the sacrifice. It is by far more than I could have ever dreamed up. I am so inspired by the students and other artists that showcased their hard work.

3. Every detail counts! From model choice, to detail on the outfit, color, style, model stance and walk, stylist confidence and appearance… Every. Little. Detail.

Micha Johnston, Hays Academy of Hair Design-Hays Campus student and 3rd place finisher took away three insightful points as well:

1. Be confident in yourself and your work. You won’t get far if you don’t believe in your talent.

2. Trust your superiors. They are there to be your crutch when you don’t understand something. Regardless if its at school or at a show.

3. Talk to people! Shows are for stylists. Famous stylists too. You just have to approach them! They’re people just like you 🙂 😝 this ones my favorite thing I learned. I was so intimidated by them the first time.

Megan Hertel, Hays Academy of Hair Design-Salina Campus student and 1st place finisher added her three takeaways from NATVA too:

1. After entering the competition and making it to the regional show in Chicago, I was reassured that I was in the right industry!

2. Being pushed out of your comfort zone is the only way to grow.

3. I met a lot of inspiring people who have shown me that anything is possible…cough cough…Stephen Moody!

Summer Melvin, co-owner of Hays Academy of Hair Design and Director of Financial Aid, was also in attendance. She watched on in pride as her students were being awarded as well as her sister and business partner, Danielle. Summer took away these three spectacular points:

1. This industry has to be one of the most creative industries I have ever seen. This show was full of amazing talent and creativity from the very beginning to the end. Who would have thought using toothpicks, jacks and hair clips could create amazing hair art.

2. Hays Academy seriously has the best students. Having our students place 1st and 3rd at a national competition that had fierce talent confirmed this for me. I cannot wait for our students to compete again next year. We have definitely set the bar high.

3. Hays Academy has the best students because they are trained by the best instructors. With Hays Academy winning Instructor of the year confirms this for me as well. Hays Academy wouldn’t be were we are today without the contribution of every single team member.

LETTER: Questioning grant to downtown organization

opinion letterThe Dane G. Hansen Organization has always been generous to Northwest Kansas. Their grants have helped many worthy institutions and charitable organizations. Grants to our learning institutions to fund new/old campus facilities along with grants to students to help them pay their tuitions. These students grants are needed more than ever as Fort Hays State University and others continue to increase their tuitions… 6.5% this year alone!

The Hansen Org. decided on July 29, 2016 to grant the Downtown Hays Development Corp. $100,000 to build a pavilion/restroom next to train tracks under a decaying 159 ft. grain storage silo in an isolated area on 10th St.. According to DHDC’s director Bloom, “concerts and parties will be held in the open air pavilion all year round and renting of the pavilion will be available to anyone interested”. DHDC and FHSU believe this will increase our community connection with FHSU. I disagree. I can only hope that Union Pacific stands by their earlier 2014 decision that stated the “a pavilion would be unsafe to residents and students”.

Tell FHSU’s hierarchy to advise the Dane G. Hansen Org. that this $100,000 would be better used and safer for all if it was used for student tuition grants. I did, and I personally received a response saying “that I should trust in our local elected political officials”. I do not hold a degree, but after 72 years I think I know better!
