Larks On The Road At Liberal

The Hays Larks travel to Liberal today to face the defending NBC World Series Champion Liberal Bee Jays in the first of a two-game series.

The 6-2 Larks have the early lead in the Jayhawk League with a 3-1 record after sweeping Haysville over the weekend. The Bee Jays took two of three from Derby and are 9-2 overall and 2-2 in league play. The Larks only league loss was at Dodge City last week.

First pitch is at 7pm in Liberal.

Hays Eagles and Monarchs At Home Tonight

The Hays Eagles Senior American Legion hosts Colby for a 6pm doubleheader tonight a Larks Park. The Eagles are coming off a tournament championship in North Platte over the weekend and are 10-4 on the season.

The Hays Monarchs are at home as well tonight, hosting Dodge City at 6 o’clock at the TMP Field. The Monarchs have not played since splitting last week’s doubleheader with the Eagles.

Royals Take Series In Anaheim

Vin Mazzaro pitched seven strong innings with the help of five double plays as the Royals beat the Los Angeles Angels 9-0, taking two of the three in Anaheim.

Mazarro scattered five hits, walking five and did not strike out a batter and worked out of a bases loaded situation in the seventh for his first win of the season. Blake Wood pitched the final two innings. All five of the Royals double plays were started by shortstop Alcides Escobar.

Alex Gordon, Billy Butler and Chris Getz each drove in two runs. Mitch Maier had three hits and scored three runs. The Royals take seven of their ten meetings with the Angels.

Kansas City is off today before starting a series in Oakland tomorrow night.

Larks Finish Sweep of Heat

The Hays Larks use two early home runs to establish a lead and hold off the Haysville Heat, 7-4 at Larks Park on Sunday night, giving the Larks a three-game sweep of the defending Jayhawk League champions.

The Larks opened the scoring in the first with Cam Brown’s fourth homer of the season, a two-run shot to left. After Haysville tied the game in the top of the second, Jon Ryan put the Larks on top for good with a solo homer to right. Haysville would cut the lead to one in the fourth, but the Larks score three in the fifth thanks to an RBI double from Ethan Leiter and an RBI single from Sloan Soulia.

Andy Lewton was sharp in his second start of the season, picking up the win. Lewton throws five innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and striking out seven. Michael Burchett works a scoreless ninth for his first save.

The win moves the Larks to 6-2 on the season and 3-1 in the Jayhawk League, while Haysville drops to 4-5-1 and 2-4 in the league. The Larks are off Monday before playing a two-game set in Liberal starting on Tuesday.

Fast Start Gives Larks Rain-Shortened Win

The Hays Larks get a three-run homer from Cam Brown in the first inning, and coast from there to a 4-2 win in five innings over the Haysville Heat on Saturday night.

The Larks add a run when Tito Andino scored on a wild pitch following a steal of third. Haysville scores two in the fourth, but could not draw any closer.

The Larks were preparing to open the sixth inning in the field when threatening skies finally started to drop rain. After a 44-minute delay, the game was called and ruled official.

Jorge Guarneros gives up two runs over five innings for his first win of the season. The Larks turn four double plays in the first five innings.

The Larks are now 5-2 on the season and 2-1 in the Jayhawk League. Haysville drops to 4-4 on the season. The Larks go for the sweep tonight at 7pm at Larks Park. It is Military Appreciation Night. All veterans are encouraged to attend and be recognized before the game. Larks Knock off Haysville

The Hays Larks take the first game of the series from the Haysville Heat, winning 5-1 Friday night at Larks Park.

The Larks get on the board in the first with Mackenzie Handel’s RBI double to right. Cam Brown picks up an RBI on a ground out, giving the Larks a 2-0 lead after one.

A pair of homers expand the Larks lead. Aaron Cornell and Jon Ryan each hit solo shots, with Cornell’s in the third and Ryan’s in the fourth for a 4-0 lead.

Haysville scores in the top of the fifth, but the Larks answer in the seventh. Cody Gougler hit an RBI single to right, scoring Sean Wilson for the 5-1 lead.

Kirk Jewasko picks up the win in his Larks debut. The junior lefty from Incarnate Word throws five innings, giving up a run on three hits, two walks and five strikeouts. Three pitchers from the bullpen combine to throw four shut out innings to close the game. Justin Ziegler picks up his first save.

The Larks are 4-2 on the season and 1-1 in the Jayhawk League. Saturday night is Pack the Park and Pack the Pantry night. Fans are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item for the Hays Community Assistance Center. All beverages and sandwiches will be on sale for $1.50. First pitch against Haysville is at 7pm at Larks Park.

Larks Hammer Salina

The Hays Larks pound out five doubles and four homeruns as they rip Salina 17-2 in a non-league game at Larks Park.

The Larks score three in the first, and then put the game away with an eight-run third.

Mackenzie Handel has a big night, hitting a pair of three-run homers and an RBI double, finishing 3-for-4 with seven RBIs. Ethan Leiter also had a double and a homer, while Cam Brown hit a solo shot. Tito Andino goes 4-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.

Malcolm Purdy gets the win, pitching four innings, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks.

The Larks are 3-2 on the season and open a three-game set with defending Jayhawk League champion Haysville tonight at Larks Park, with games starting at 7pm each night. Saturday night is Pack the Park and Pack the Pantry night. Fans are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to be donated to the Hays Community Assistance Center. Royals Call Up Moustakas

The Royals are calling up third baseman Mike Moustakas from Triple-A Omaha.

Moustakas was a first-round draft pick by the Royals in 2007. He will make his debut tonight in his native Los Angeles. Moustakas joins Eric Hosmer, the 2008 first-round pick, on the Royals roster.

Moustakas was hitting .356 in his last 10 games for the Storm Chasers. For the season, Moustakas was hitting .287 with 10 home runs and 44 RBIs. To make room for Moustakas, the Royals have optioned Mike Aviles to Omaha.

Royals Hold Off Toronto

Luke Hochevar wins for the first time in seven starts as the Kansas City Royals earn a series split with the Toronto Blue Jays, winning the finale 3-2 yesterday.

Hochevar allows both Blue Jay runs in the fourth inning, but shut down the Blue Jays for the rest of his seven innings. Jeff Francouer drove in two of the three runs for the Royals. Joakim Soria loads the bases in the ninth, but picks up his first save since reclaiming the closer role.

The Royals are at the Los Angeles Angels tonight. Jeff Francis makes the start for Kansas City. Royals pre-game at 8:30pm on KAYS.

Eckerle, Propst Taken on Third Day of MLB Draft

Two more former Hays Larks are taken on the final day of the 2011 Major League Baseball draft.

Three-year Lark Brandon Eckerle was drafted in the 32nd round by the Detroit Tigers. Eckerle started in center field for the Larks in 2008, 2009 and 2010. Eckerle played his college ball for Michigan State.

Oklahoma State’s Brad Propst was taken in the 38th round by the Houston Astros. Propst is a right-handed pitcher who played for the Larks last year.

Big Homers Help Blue Jays Defeat Royals

The Kansas City Royals rally in the eighth and ninth innings, but come up a run short, losing 9-8 to Toronto.

The Blue Jays drive in seven of their nine runs on two homers. Jayson Nix hit a three-run homer to put the Jays on top 5-4 in the fourth. Adam Lind followed with a grand slam in the sixth to cap Toronto’s scoring.

Billy Butler hit a three-run blast in the eighth, and Alex Gordon made it a one-run game with a RBI double in the ninth. However, Melky Cabrera lined out to shortstop to end the game.

Danny Duffy takes the loss, giving up five runs on eight hits and walks four.

The Royals and Blue Jays wrap up the series this afternoon. Royals pre-game is at 2:35 on KAYS.

Larks Drop Jayhawk League Opener

The Dodge City A’s score six straight runs from the fourth through seventh innings and beat the Hays Larks 10-4 in Dodge City.

The Larks led 2-0 in the second with RBI singles from Mackenzie Handel and Sean Wilson. Dodge City took the lead in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs. The Larks tie it in the third with Handel’s second RBI single. The A’s regain the lead for good in the fourth, scoring twice. The A’s score two more runs in both the fifth and seventh innings to pull away.

Tory Doerr takes his first loss, giving up five runs on six hits and walking four over three and two-thirds innings.

The Larks fall to 2-2 and 0-1 in the Jayhawk League, while Dodge City continues its hot start at 6-0 and 2-0 in the league.

The Larks are back at home tonight for a non-league game against Salina. First pitch is at 7pm at Larks Park.

KS Shrine Bowl Returns to Hays

The Kansas Shrine Bowl returns to Hays July 30th , the third time in its 38 year history,  according to Executive Director Dave Mize.  The state’s premier high school football all-star game will be played at FHSU Lewis Field.  Hays High’s Casey Sedbrook will play for the West Team.  The two previous Shrine Bowl games in Hays were 10 years apart, in 1997 and 2007.

Other activities will include band and cheerleading camps conducted the week before the game.  On game day, a pro-style high school combine will be conducted.  The day also features the traditional Shrine Bowl Parade through downtown Hays.  Just before the game kickoff, two road races will be held as an additional fundraiser.

The 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children provide pediatric specialty care, regardless of the patients’ ability to pay.
